It’s easy to have a good time in #Badlands National Park in #SouthDakota The park’s rugged beauty comes from millions of years of geologic forces building up and tearing down this unique landscape and can be explored from numerous trails. Visitors can see bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets in their native habitat as well as the fossilized remains of ancient mammals like three-toed horses, oreodonts and saber-toothed cats. Pretty cool. Photo @BadlandsNPS by David Restivo, #NationalPark Service. #travel #FindYourPark #usinterior

Photographer Patrick Rodden captured glorious orange and purple skies over Isle Royale National Park in #Michigan He explains: “It’s a park with so many opportunities from hiking to boating and excellent wildlife viewing. Not only did I enjoy the terrestrial views, but I also had an incredible time watching the sky. This photo was taken from Rock Harbor on my last night on the island. It was a phenomenal sight to end a week of hiking. There is nothing like a midwestern sunset in all of its raw beauty and power.” Photo and words courtesy of Patrick Rodden ( @cliftonwanders ). #usinterior #findyourpark #isleroyalenationalpark

Rising almost 900 feet above the surrounding plains, Devils Tower National Monument in #Wyoming is a dramatic sight -- especially when a summer lightning storm swirls around it. This astounding geologic feature is considered sacred to the Northern Plains Indians and other tribes, who called it “Bear’s Tipi” or “Bear’s Lodge.” With a fascinating history and a starring role in pop culture, it’s easy to see why people are drawn to this amazing park. Known simply as “the Arch,” architect Eero Saarinen’s stainless steel construction dominates the St. Louis skyline. Finished in 1965 and standing 630 feet tall, the Gateway Arch is the tallest memorial in the U.S. and its ingenious elevator design allows visitors to enjoy incredible view from the top. In 2010, Karen and Matt Smith quit their jobs to embark on a two-year journey to visit all the national parks. “At the time we finished there were 59 parks. We were thrilled when the #GatewayArch was made the 60th national park, and it felt like an honor and a homecoming to return and take our picture in front of the new entrance sign and get the official stamp in our park passports.” Photo @gatewayarchnps courtesy of Karen and Matt Smith ( @mattandkarensmith ). #travel #Missouri #FindYourPark #usinterior

Happy birthday to the Appalachian Trail! The incredible 2,192 mile-long footpath was completed on August 14, 1937. Anywhere from 2 to 3 million people hike a portion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail each year. One of the lauded romantic journeys of our time, only about 20,000 people have thru-hiked the winding trail from #Georgia to #Maine Whether you're taking 5 or 6 months to traverse the whole thing or an afternoon hike to enjoy the charm and the scenery, The A.T. is a treasure that will not disappoint. The deep canyon of the Snake River in #Idaho , with its crags and crevices and thermal updrafts, is home to the greatest concentration of nesting birds of prey in North America – and perhaps, the world. To preserve this remarkable wildlife habitat, the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area was established in 1993. Visitors are often treated to the sight of hawks, owls, eagles and falcons launching from their cliffside aeries to soar and hunt on warm air currents rising from the #canyon floor. This dawn picture from #AlabamaHills National Recreation Area in #California looks like a glimpse into a realm of fantasy. Photographer Joshua Snow marveled at the morning light shining into the valley. “The rising fog in the valley between this rock outcrop and the foothills of Mount Whitney was set ablaze by sunlight, like a cauldron of liquid red hot steel. The clouds shrouding the sunrise from touching the peaks, mountains blocking it from reaching the valley, just a strip of intense light warming the front of the range.” Thanks for sharing this magical moment. The enchanting thermal pools of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming are hot spots for more than one reason 🔥. Black Pool, a hot spring that was once dark in color, now hosts deep cerulean blue water and is one of the features in West Thumb Geyser Basin. A boardwalk makes a number of the pools accessible and brings you along the edge of Yellowstone Lake. Please remember that though these places look gorgeous, for your own safety don't get too close. Happy International Cat Day! A pawtrait of a young bobcat at Grand Canyon National Park in #Arizona seemed like the perfect way to celebrate. Bobcats, though elusive and nocturnal, are the wildcats most likely to be seen in North America. They get their name from their short, black-tipped tail, which appears to be cut or "bobbed." One of our smallest wild felines, they roam throughout the continent and thrive in a diversity of habitats -- from forests and swamps to deserts and mountains. Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve in #Alaska has no roads, no trails and many of the mountains and rivers have no names. Wind, water, temperature, and glacial and tectonic actions sculpted wildly varied landscapes in this vast wilderness. From November to March, most activity ceases while -20ºF to -50ºF temperatures persist. The dry interior climate sees little snow, but what falls stays to wrap land and rivers in ice and silence. Summer visitors must be self-sufficient, but are rewarded with sightings of caribou, grizzly and black bears, wolves, moose, Dall's sheep, wolverines, muskoxen and foxes. Today is International Owl Awareness Day, a day that’s important because owls are excellent at disguise — making awareness of them somewhat challenging. Fierce hunters, owls fly silently and have excellent hearing and eyesight. There are 19 species of owls found in North America and plenty of opportunities to spot these birds on public lands or in your backyard. Burrowing #owl awareness facts (featured above ): - #Burrowingowls hiss when frightened to mimic a snake - They will sometimes decorate their burrows with dung to  attract their favorite food, dung beetles - Sometimes they dig their own burrows and sometimes  they’ll use the burrows dug by other animals like tortoises or prairie dogs. Whoo has seen an owl on a national park, national wildlife refuge or other public lands? We want to know! In the summer of 1969, the Cuyahoga River caught on fire in Cleveland, #Ohio a few miles north of Cuyahoga Valley National Park ( @cuyahogavalleynps ). It was not the first #CuyahogaRiver fire or the biggest. Despite its small size, it holds a place in our memory as a reflection of poor treatment of the environment. Fifty years have passed since that impactful event and much of the story following the fire is positive and inspirational. #CuyahogaValley #NationalPark is part of the story. Established five years after the fire in 1974, the park now protects 22 miles of the river and 33,000 acres of its watershed. Come enjoy this lovely landscape and hear the story of a river renewed. Cross-bedded and swirling sandstone makes for a striking scene so beautiful it hurts at “The Wave” in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. Now is an excellent time to plan an autumn trip to the area, as the heat and potential for flash flooding can be dangerous during the summer. Please remember, the Bureau of Land Management's “The Wave” requires a permit purchased in advance by a lottery system. Visiting these remote places takes planning and consideration. Please bring plenty of your own water and proper hiking footwear. Photo by Bob Wick, Bureau of Land Management ( @mypubliclands ).
