Selling your images on stock sites is a nice way to diversify your income stream (you know it – we’re all about that passive income ). One thing to know is that it’s actually harder to sell your images on these sites than you might expect. There are often really strict guidelines on the type and style of images that the stock sites will approve for upload. Plus, absolutely no branding can be visible on any stock images, this sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how many sneaky logos pop up in the background of images. Hello Starbucks coffee cup sitting 4 tables away from your subject…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you do get your image approved by the site, key wording should be your BEST FRIEND. The more keywords you have associated with your image, the more likely it is to be discovered in more searches. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And here’s something mucho importanto to consider… if you have a big brand approach you to buy one of your images, they’re generally going to be expecting exclusivity for that photo – they’re most likely going to be paying you the big bucks, after all. This means if you’ve previously sold that image on a stock site for oh, say $5 – you’ve pretty much lost all bargaining rights on that deal with the bigger brand.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We totally support setting up a little passive income by selling your images on stock sites but just keep these things in mind when providing your images for upload. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And remember, when choosing a stock site, it’s worth shopping around for a deal that’s favourable to you. While the sites won’t charge you to upload an image, they’ll take a percentage of your sales. Different sites = different commissions.

Today’s Money Monday is a BANGER. We’re bringing you real-world advice direct from our photography expert @laurenepbath – she’s worked with some big names like @australia , @moetchandon and @olympus_au (just to name a few ) so it’s safe to say – our girl knows her stuff. Here’s what she’s got for you:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How much to charge for your photo really depends on who’s asking. If you’ve been approached by a magazine or a newspaper they may not have the budget to pay much (if anything ) at all – especially if you’re working with tourism boards. When a magazine uses your image to accompany their article this is known as an editorial piece and they’ll credit you but often won’t actually pay you for use of that image. A thing to note here is that if you’re not getting paid for your image you need to ensure that the exposure you’re getting from this piece is worth it. It’s also really important to stipulate that the image usage rights are only for this one occasion, they shouldn’t be adding your image into their own image library, especially if you’re not being paid for it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, how much can you charge for an image? Usually, tourism boards are able to pay anywhere between $100-$500 for a single shot. What constitutes a $500 feature? Think ‘once in a million’ kind of stuff – the sort of thing with WOW factor that would be hard to replicate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Big brands, however, those guys will easily (and often ) pay 5 figures for a single image. No kidding, we know people that have sold images for over $10,000!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here’s her PRO tip: if you’ve had a big brand reach out to you for your image, but you’re not sure how much to charge, jump over to the Getty Images website. They have a calculator that you can use to base your pricing on. These calculations are usually at the higher end of the scale, so be prepared to negotiate down from there.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There you have it, we told you that she had some juicy advice!
