Makes sense because water is the majority of the rest of our body too. “I had a major health crisis in 2010 that basically blew the roof off my life. I was given a 60% chance of surviving. Yoga and meditation became my life rafts in a terrifying time, helping me through a lengthy treatment and recovery process. Since then, yoga has become the cornerstone of my physical/emotional health and a huge focus of my life. Now I only go to the doctor for yearly check-ups. I really enjoyed my break from social media. Didn’t post and barely replied to any messages for quite some time. Same happened to my training, I barely trained and just stayed with my daily 20 min morning workout routine. At first I felt bad about it but it was necessary for me to clear my head and focus on my own headspace. I believe taking a break is a necessary part of any growth, so if you feel like quitting, try to take a break instead and take some time to figure your shit out. IS CARDIO REQUIRED TO LOSE FAT? - While there is nothing at all wrong with utilizing cardio to help you to lose weight, it’s important to keep in mind that cardio is just a tool that can aid in weight loss. It’s not the end all be all deciding factor on if you will lose weight or not. - Rather, ensuring you have created a calorie deficit is the key number 1 most important factor when it comes to weight loss. This can be done in in many different ways. - Including cardio into your fat loss plan is a great way to burn additional calories, which helps create a calorie deficit. Keep in mind, a deficit is a deficit. For example, whether you create that deficit through 300 calories worth of cardio, or you eat 300 less calories for the day, the end result will be the same. - Another often overlooked way to create a calorie deficit is to increase your NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis ). This is essentially all the calories you burn doing non-exercise related things, such as walking, taking the stairs, standing instead of sitting, parking at the back of the parking lot, etc. - The big takeaway here is that if you dread the idea of cardio, then don’t do it! That would immediately take a lot of the stress off of your knees while still training your squat pattern. The above images are all fantastic variations of a squat, and no one variation is better than the other - it’s only about finding the right variation for YOU! - On the flip side, a more hip dominant deadlift position like a Romanian Deadlift might bother your back a bit. If that’s the case, just travel a little bit further up the continuum and try out how a Conventional Deadlift, Trap Bar Deadlift, or Sumo Deadlift feels. These variations, in order, have a more upright position which would help distribute some of that stress to your legs and off of the lower back. - Now obviously everyone looks different with these exercises based on their levers and style, but the key takeaway remains the same. If something happens to bother you - don’t sweat it and also don’t feel like you have to train through it! Experiment and find an alternative that works for you. If none of these variations work, then you could test out single leg variations (lunging, split squatting, single leg deadlifting, etc. ) that would reduce the load but still give you the benefits. . . . . • 5 ways to get yourself into meditation • . 1. Pick up a mantra that resonates with you & start repeating it. You many want to count 📿 to help you keep track of the repetitions but it’s not necessary. 2. Focus on a part of your body & “lock” your attention on it. A lot of people use the 3rd 👁 but use what resonates with you the most. 3. Stand in front of an object & lock your sight on it. A 🕯 might be a good option. 4. Practice a hyperventilation breathing 😤exercise like the Wim Hof one. 5. Visualise your thoughts like birds 🐦 that once they arrive in your mind they leave. . There are plenty techniques and ultimately the outcome is to stop the 🧠 from thinking. If you stop thinking for 5 secs you have entered meditation for 5 secs. . More important than the technique is the practice. But any practice worth your time needs to have a positive outcome. There is little benefit in standing still & daydreaming 💭 for hours. . Following a fantastic response to this session when we ran it sometime ago, we've been itching to share it again and feel it's very needed for practitioners in modern vinyasa yoga to gain the knowledge & experience of these and how to integrate in your own practice safely, slowly, efficiently & patiently. Very common in the Instagram world to see posts from very mobile human beings suggesting all you need to do this advanced shape is three prescribed stretches/exercises. I don’t think they are purposefully trying to misinform people, they’re sharing what has worked for them but they should also mention that their joints are most likely very different then yours. Their motor skills are different. And that you should isolate each joint thats involved in the movement to see if it can do what you’re asking of it without pain and/or compensation. Movement Dissociation is an important principle to apply when working towards a new skill or attribute. Movement dissociation is the ability to differentiate among movements of different parts of the body. If you jump into a complex position with multiple joints doing multiple actions how did you determine if it’s suitable for you? How do you assess where it’s breaking down? Where strength, awareness or range of motion could be added to improve the position? Movement Mapping practices follow a specific movement dissociation progression that empowers students to progressively work towards their movement goals applying research based principles. Do You Know Why I Started Yoga? I started Yoga at age 35 because of pain, stiffness and injury. I suffered from a bad back from desk work, sore Achilles heels and knees from running and pain in the hands from Karate. That’s how most of the guys in my classes have come to yoga too. It’s a shame that by the time you convince yourself to try it, you REALLY need it! If only we were more proactive and knew that by DOING yoga in the first place would help PREVENT pain and injury. I’m now 52 and feel the healthiest I’ve been in my life. In the early days of finding yoga, I soon came to realise that along with easing the stiffness and tension in my body, strengthening muscles and increasing my energy, yoga also gave me a chance to slow my body down. As we learn through practising regularly, once the body slows down and we train the breath to slow down - the mind will also follow. So if you’re a guy who comes home from work buzzing, needing to shut off thoughts and the busy-ness of the day - but don’t know how to, then yoga may just give you the tools that you need. You see, it’s not about BEING flexible - that’s just a pretty cool result of a regular practice. In a yoga class, you use each pose to create FOCUS. By placing your body in shapes that make you concentrate - like twists and balance poses - you are training your mind to settle on one thing. We typically hold poses for 3-5 breaths, the concentration used with steady breath calms the mind and slows down the thoughts. You could say that the physical practice is actually a moving meditation - which is what brought me to actually enjoy meditation in the first place (because I can’t sit for an hour at a time comfortably meditating ). At YogaJak we now have 6 different styles of yoga available, run in 6 wk terms - casual rates are also available. (See highlight ‘class styles’ for more deets ) There is no chanting, no singing, we don’t wear lycra! It is exercise that goes a little further than physical with a great group of blokes. Get yourself along, your body and mind will thank you for it. Class numbers are small, I am able to work around each individual student’s limitations, nothing is ever taken too seriously

This is a great post! Lots of people are told that there squats are wrong because they don’t appear to fit in the category that their trainer believes to be the best squat pattern. However every body is proportioned in its own way and may be more efficient in a pattern that doesn’t conform to the norm. 𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐃𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐒𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐓𝐒! - Follow @TheTrainingManual for daily fitness/nutrition tips and education📚 - So many people like to debate what a “perfect” squat looks like, and today we’re here to ease some of that pressure! - Based on many factors such as limb and torso lengths, previous injury history, current mobility levels, etc. your squat may look either more quad dominant or more hip dominant. A quad dominant squat requires greater ankle mobility and is easier to attain for those with shorter femurs and longer torsos. A hip dominant squat is more likely to occur in folks with more limited ankle mobility and/or longer femurs and shorter torsos. - Mobility is certainly something we can all work on, but factors like limb and torso length we only have our parents to thank (or blame ) for! There’s nothing we can do to change it, and instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, we can just modify our squat style to more naturally fit our body type. - When it’s time to add weight to your squats, there are different things you can do to ensure that the bar remains over your base of support (mid-foot ) such as move where the bar sits on your back, so that you’re still performing a safe and effective squat whether you’re more quad or hip dominant! - We hope this helps you out!
