What a moment it was just as the last light disappeared beyond the horizon. To welcome the the night, here in the jungle, we had this beautiful “bhaaloo” to keep us company. Spending time with him as he foraged the evening away was one of my fondest memories of these breathtaking jungles. It’s easy to see why this beautiful being became Kipling’s muse, as he penned his iconic tale and before he introduced us to the bear we all came to know and love, the bear named Baloo. • 🐾: Melursus ursinus 🌎: India • #slothbear #india #travel #neverstopexploring #wildlifephotography #lonelyplanet #enzurisafaris #wildlifeplanet #worthmorealive #kanha #lonelyplanet #travelgram #nikon #photography #incredibleindiaofficial #earthfocus #natgeohub #wildgeography #natgeowild #natgeowild_hd #natgeowildlife #naturelovers #splendid_animals #wildlifeaddicts #wildlifelovers #wildlifeperfection #disney #junglebook

Extraordinaria fotografía!! 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘 . . Reposted from @natgeotravel ( @get_regrann ) - Photo by @amivitale | A herd of elephants crosses a river at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. More than 800 elephants spend significant time at @loisaba_conservancy and @nature_africa is working with partners to conserve this important elephant migratory pathway. Elephants are excellent swimmers and if faced with a strong current, they use their trunk as a snorkel and then march right across rivers 12 feet deep. Long ago people thought that ancestral elephants may have come out of the seas. A popular myth was that their trunk evolved as a sort of snorkel in more aquatic settings. Follow @amivitale to learn how photography can support those at @r.e.s.c.u.e who care for the most vulnerable of the elephants and strengthen the communities surrounding them. @conservationorg @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection #protectelephants #elephants #stoppoaching #kenya #worthmorealive - #regrann #elefantes #photo #photograpy

Back in July, Cambodia banned the veterinary drug diclofenac in an attempt to save remaining vulture populations in the South-East Asian nation. . Following lengthy advocacy from NGOs including BirdLife Internetional, the Cambodian government has banned the drug, which is used as a painkiller for cattle. Diclofenac is deadly to vultures and the ban came into effect immedatiately. The Cambodian government is looking to safeguard the declining and threated populations of the three vulture species – Red-headed, Slender-billed and White-rumped – that remain. . The vulture population in India, formerly the largest in the world and numbering into the millions, suffered a 99 per cent decline as a consequence of the veterinary use of diclofenac administered to cattle. Diclofenac, while harmless to cattle and other livestock, results in death of vultures if they feed on a carcass of an animal previously treated with this drug. The near-disappearance of these scavengers from the ecosystem resulted in a huge public health crisis as millions of cattle carcasses, discarded daily in refuse dumps, went uneaten. The feral dog population grew and this led to an increased number of human deaths from rabies, while also putting pressures on native wildlife populations that the dogs predated. . In response, the Government of India banned the veterinary use of diclofenac and promoted meloxicam, a harmless and equally effective substitute drug. There is now evidence of vulture population recovery in some parts. The Cambodia Vulture Working Group (CVWG ) has been championing the conservation of Cambodia's vultures since 2004. Cambodia's vultures are facing an increasingly high risk of extinction and continuous monitoring has shown a 50 per cent decline: 2019's national census recorded merely 120 vultures in the entire country. Photo by Danny Copeland // We need to take action now to help protect dwindling shark and ray populations, like the unique wedgefish. Their fins fetch the highest price of all shark fins on the international market, which has reduced their populations by over 80% in some areas. A @CITES Appendix II listing would ensure that governments finally begin to manage the catch and trade of this highly vulnerable species. This level of protection for wedgefish and 17 other shark and ray species is up for vote this Sunday, with #CITES member nations gathered for #CoP18 Follow the link in our bio to urge the Canadian and American governments to switch their votes from "NO" to "YES" and protect these species before they are gone forever. #TurningTheTide with @shawnheinrichs @bluespherefoundation @vulcaninc @thewcs @sharkconservationfund

Reposted from @elephant_stories_with_fiona ( @get_regrann ) - 🐘WORLD ELEPHANT DAY🐘 Every day is Elephant Day for me. Elephants are my World. Please take a moment to read the “Elephant Pledge” and join our Elephant Community to help spread the word and support Elephant Conservation and to bring about much needed awareness against the exploitation of Elephants used in the Tourist Industry. My contribution to commemorate this very special day is a video of Tim. I took this video. My dream came true to see this magnificently powerful elephant. I will never understand how any single person can ever want to ride, bathe with, shoot, drape lights from their body for parades, train, chain or hurt an elephant and worse, believe it’s their right to exercise their power over these incredible and sentient animals. They have feelings. No one has the right. They are born wild and should stay wild and free. A few words to try to describe him.....he felt ancient, he felt like a very very old soul roaming this earth..... he was quiet. He was magnificent. He was mammoth. Happy World Elephant Day Friends. WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY Decisions made in the next ten days will determine the fate of the African Elephant. It sounds dramatic, and it is. Currently, there is a group of people gathered in Geneva, representatives from countries across the globe, who hold great power. This gathering is the meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP18 ), also known as the World Wildlife Conference. But before we dissect the current conference, let’s wind back the clock, because history matters here. A century ago the African elephant population was estimated to be greater than 10 million, albeit already hugely reduced from the time when Europeans first arrived on the continent. Over the following decades the killing continued, and by 1979 the continental population was further reduced to an estimated 1.3 million. CITES was established in 1973, becoming the global entity to control and regulate the international trade in elephant ivory that was driving much of the slaughter. For twenty years, from 1977 to 1989, the trade in ivory was allowed but regulated by CITES, yet the killing continued. As a result, in 1989 CITES moved the African elephant onto Appendix 1, affording the species the strictest CITES protection, resulting in the international ivory trade becoming illegal. As the CITES protection took effect, some elephant populations started to recover. However, certain countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe continued to lobby for permits to sell ivory, arguing that the resulting income is necessary for supporting conservation efforts. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: https://biglife.org/8y8 Photo: Jeremy Goss #conservation #africa #wildlife #nature #environment #sustainability #extinction #poaching #elephants #ivory #worthmorealive #biglifefoundation #endangeredspecies

Australia has announced they will ban the domestic trade of ivory and rhino horn. At the CITES CoP18 meeting, the Environment Minister of Australia announced the government's plan to implement the ban. She will meet with environment ministers in November to formally end the trade in all states around the country. I am so relieved that this is happening, and that we are doing our part to help stop elephants from being poached to extinction due to the ivory trade, a trade that should never have existed. I really didn’t think this would happen for a while. I almost can’t believe it. Thank you to the Government of Australia for making this change. @sussanleymp @scottmorrisonmp Thank you again @billshortenmp and the @australianlabor party for showing commitment to banning the trade and the @australiangreens for making a stand. Thanks to all the 263,758 supporters who signed my petition on Change to help get this issue noticed. Once the ban is formalised we’ll be one step closer to giving elephants the protection they deserve. Thanks to everyone who continues to spread the word and take action to help protect elephants everywhere, and who knows how important they are- for they truly are worth more alive.

ᴛʀᴀᴅɪᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ ᴄʜɪɴᴇꜱᴇ ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄɪɴᴇ Another positive news related with pangolin came from Hong Kong, where wildlife based products are a big business there. Recently, University of Hong Kong and WILDAID launched a survey about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM ). One of the questions was about the use of pangolin scales in TCM. From 1,000 participants, 67% said it is unacceptable. And 85% agreed that TCM should ditch endangered wildlife species and instead promoting sustainable and herbal alternatives. It's a promising result and it shows that people of Hong Kong now see the use of pangolin in TCM is as unacceptable as using tiger, said WILDAID campaigner, Alex Hofford. Non-wildlife based TCM is also supported by Professor Lao Lixing, director of the school of Chinese Medicine at University of Hong Kong. He said that the use of endangered species only serves to damage TCM's reputation.

Today, nearly all wildlife have come back virtually to capacity, with the exception of the apex predators. So the team orchestrated the largest international translocation ever undertaken. 24 lions were transported from South Africa to the conservancy. It is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years, Already, 20 cubs have been born. I covered this historic undertaking for my recent @natgeo story. #repost from @natgeo #Earthlings #Elephants #SentientBeings #OnePlanet #RespectLife Photo by Ami Vitale @amivitale | Keepers at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary ( @r.e.s.c.u.e ) gather in the "boma" with a handful of the rambunctious orphans in their care. These women are some of the first indigenous Samburu women elephant keepers in Africa. Traditionally in Kenya women marry young and are meant to care for their children and homes. Although women had never been keepers before, the community has embraced the new program and is excited to hear what these women have accomplished, rushing to them when they return home to learn news of each of the elephants in their care. What’s happening at Reteti is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation, not only in the way humans relate to wild animals but also how we relate to one another. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is a story as much about the elephants as it is about all of humanity. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be no more. The former things have passed away...”Look! I am making all things new”. Revelation 21:4-5 I cant wait for the new system of things to come, when this scripture, this promise of God is finally fulfilled. Our entire planet including animals and humans urgently need!
