„The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN ), the global authority on the conservation status of wild animals and plants, announced Thursday that Masai giraffes, a subspecies spread throughout Kenya and Tanzania, are now endangered, primarily because of poaching and changes in land use. There are an estimated 35,000 Masai giraffes remaining, but their population has fallen by nearly 50 percent in the last three decades. Masai giraffes are iconic, says Tanya Sanerib, international legal director for the Center for Biological Diversity. Given that they’re one of the largest subspecies of giraffes, they’re the “quintessential” animal you likely think of when you think giraffes. For this subspecies to be declared endangered is a wake-up call, Sanerib says. “This was devastating news...It really sounds the alarm bell,” she says. “It really indicates that we need to be doing more for giraffes internationally and with whatever tools are available.” National Geographic . . . #giraffe #giraffesofinstagram #giraffeselfie #giraffelover #masaigirrafe #giraffeconservation #savegiraffes #cutesnimal #extinctanimals #climatechange #fridayforfuture #fridaysforfuture #savenature #savetheplanet #gretathunberg #madewithpaper #digitalillustration #graphicart #graphicdesign #creativeagency #illustrator #illustration_best #illustrationsketch #illustrationoftheday #picame #thedesignfix #illustrationartists #lovetodraw #nationalgeographic

Photo by @amivitale Three young West African giraffe graze outside of Doulouwal Peulh, Niger - a village about 50 miles outside of the capital of Niamey where people live side by side with the endangered West African giraffe in the country's government-defined Giraffe Zone. Female giraffes give birth standing up and newborns are welcomed to the world with an almost five foot drop to the ground! However, within 30 minutes they are standing, and only hours later they are able to run with their mothers. At one point, the range of West African giraffe stretched across the Sahel, from Nigeria to Senegal. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss all contributed to the population's decline, and by the mid-90's, only 49 remained, in this zone. Today, while still highly threatened, thanks to heroic conservation efforts, they number 600. In December, in order to help the longterm survival prospects of this subspecies, the Nigerien government with help from a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation ( @giraffe_conservation ) and Sahara Conservation Fund worked together to translocate eight giraffe from the Giraffe Zone to the Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve. Photo by @amivitale West African giraffe browse in the early morning hours in Niger's Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where humans and giraffe coexist. Only 600 of the highly endangered West African giraffe exist in the world, so the government of Niger launched an ambitious plan to create a satellite population of the highly endangered species. With the help of Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Sahara Conservation Fund, eight animals were translocated Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve where they had been absent for 50 years. It was the first conservation effort of its kind for the West African subspecies. Photo by @amivitale Tomorrow, Feb. 27 in Prague, my exhibit Hope x Extinction opens at @czechphotocz at 6pm. I'll be giving an artist's talk and two VR films will be on display. The show kicks off the new Czech Photo Nature competition for Czech and Slovak photographers. Learn more and make plans to join me at czechphoto.org. The show runs until April 7. Here, an orphaned baby reticulated giraffe embraces @sararacamp wildlife keeper Lekupania. This giraffe will be rehabilitated and return to the wild, as a number of others have done before him. Right now, giraffe are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. The decline is thought to be caused by to habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but because there haven't been long term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly what it happening. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to better understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. Follow @doconnor16 @giraffe_conservation @sdzsafaripark to learn more. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. In devastating conservation news, scientists have declared the Masai giraffe endangered. This is a wake-up call for the international community to do more to save these incredible animals. Living throughout Kenya and Tanzania, the population of this subspecies has fallen by nearly 50% over the past 30 years due to poaching, changes in land use, and expanding human populations. Our team is fighting every day to conserve habitat for Masai giraffes in northern Tanzania. Since 2011, their numbers have increased in our focus area. 📸African People & Wildlife/ @cameronzegers #giraffe #masaigiraffe #giraffeconservation #extinction #wildlifeconservation #Tanzania #Africa #wildlifephotography #protectgiraffes #DontLetThemDisappear #savegiraffes #stoppoaching #worthmorealive

Photo by @amivitale | A reticulated giraffe towers above the shrubbery at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. One of the theories put forward as to why giraffe have such long necks is that it gives them an advantage in securing nutrients. They can reach leaves that no other animals can. Others posit that the long necks are a result of sexual selection since male giraffes battle with their necks to win mates. Most recently, scientists have hypothesized that the long necks are to help fight the African heat. The greater surface area allows more heat can escape. Whichever it may be, these fascinating creatures are in trouble. Their numbers have fallen 30 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to about 110,000 today. Earlier in the year, together with our partner @africanparksnetwork we fitted GPS satellite units to 8 critically endangered Kordofan Giraffe in @zakouma_national_park , Chad. Our partner Kordofan Giraffe Project @giraffe_girl_in_chad continues to monitor the giraffe and has already made some interesting observations. Wet season has started in Zakouma and much of the park is flooded and inaccessible. The GPS units allow us to follow the giraffe remotely and see how the their movements change during the seasons. As you can see, one giraffe walked all the way to the western border of the park - an area that we were told is NEVER utilised by giraffe. Amazing what we can still learn about giraffe. This data also contributes to Twiga Tracker, our Africa-wide giraffe tracking initiative. Photo by @amivitale | On International Women's Day, I want to share the story of one of the inspiring women I have met. Ruth Lekgpanai is the first woman in Africa who is a "giraffe guard" for the “Twiga Walinzi,” a brilliant team that works as field researchers and protectors of endangered reticulated giraffe in northern Kenya. Right now, giraffe are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. She and her team are on the front lines of protecting this beautiful animal, gathering more information on giraffe populations and developing a photo identification database to track individual giraffes. They manage a network of 120 camera traps and conduct snare removal patrols. Ruth is one of many women worldwide who are protecting, researching and caring for the world's most vulnerable species. @nrt_kenya @sdzsafaripark @doconnor16 @giraffe_conservation @r.e.s.c.u.e @sararacamp @kenyawildlifeservice @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeoimagecollection #protectgiraffes #DontLetThemDisappear #giraffe #giraffes #savegiraffes #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #nikon #d4s #nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #natureisspeaking #conservation #amivitale

Watch the CSL scouts practising before the giraffe capture on Saturday. Filmed at the CSL base, these clips show Goodson Kaunda posing as the giraffe and being roped to the ground. Due to their large size, giraffe are challenging to dart. This technique of roping them to the ground minimises injury when the immobilising drugs take effect. During the snare removal, Goodson was invaluable holding the ropes that restrained the giraffes legs, then quickly untangling them so that it could stand. Really brave work from all the scouts, when you see the power of a giraffe kick!

A Természetvédelmi Világszövetség (IUCN ) adatai alapján a zsiráfok száma 1985-ben 155 000 volt, 2015-ben már viszont csupán csak 97 000.Erről viszont senki sem beszél. Ideje felhívni a figyelmet! Egyedül nem élik túl!

Repost @travelstoriesafrica by @media repost: "An orphaned baby reticulated giraffe embraces @sararacamp wildlife keeper Lekupania. This giraffe will be rehabilitated and return to the wild, as a number of others have done before him. This was one of those moments where you could see how clearly the stewards of this land, the indigenous Samburu warriors of northern Kenya, care for the wildlife they share the land with. Currently, giraffe are undergoing what is being termed a silent extinction. Estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. The decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but because there haven't been long term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly what is happening. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to better understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. Empowering communities like the Samburu will be crucial to saving these and other iconic species around the world. Follow @doconnor16 @giraffe_conservation @sdzsafaripark to learn more." What! are you having a giraffe?! It's Monday again?! Where did the weekend go? 😲 Did you know that giraffes give birth standing up after a 14 month gestation period. When its time, the calf will fall a total of about six feet once born. This may seem like a long way down, but this is how the amniotic sac and the umbilical cord breaks, it also encourages the newborn to take its first deep breath upon impact. Many people first believed that the giraffe was a cross between a leopard and a camel, which became reflected in its scientific name, Giraffa camelopardalis. #studentsofnature #mondayfeels #giraffes #animalsofinstagram #safari #safarisightings #gamedrive #gamedrivehighlights #bushwalks #learningfromnature #education #conservation #savegiraffes #wildlife #africannature #africanwildlife #wildlifephotography #africanfieldtrips #travelabroad #visitsouthafrica

How is YOUR Sunday going?🦒 📸 @amivitale West African giraffe browse in the Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where giraffes and humans co-exist about 50 miles outside of Niger's capital, Niamey. For almost 50 years, the highly threatened West African giraffe has lived only in this region. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss have all contributed to the population's decline. An ambitious plan to create a satellite population of the highly endangered West African giraffe was undertaken by the Nigerien government with help by a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation ( @giraffe_conservation ) and Sahara Conservation Fund.
