From Anstruther to Eyemouth: Here’s my second ‘Mission Grid’. A shorter journey this time, so “just” 27 glass plate photographs from 6 lifeboat stations over a 2 week period in June — and this doesn’t include all the private commissions I made along the way to help fund the journey! When I posted the first one in May, I mentioned that I’m always trying to think of new ways to show you my journey, to keep it interesting and convey the sheer scale of it. Also, to illustrate why I call each leg of the journey a ‘mission’ rather than simply a ‘trip’. I hope you generally get a sense of that anyway but this is perhaps the most graphic way that I’ve come up with so far. I’m feeling pretty chuffed to be up-to-date once again this evening. Tomorrow’s a new day. Onwards! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #portrait #withcouragenothingisimpossible #savinglivesatsea #missiongrid

I’ve been a little remiss with my traditional #LSPthrowdown lately — the photographs of my apron that bring the end of each mission to a close. I forgot to post the one from @rnlirhyl in April and then totally forgot to even shoot one at Eyemouth on 22nd June! So, I’m hoping this photograph of Helen Hastings, Eyemouth’s brand new Shannon class, is an ample stand-in. Enormous thanks once again to the 109 @rnli volunteers who feature in my photographs at the six lifeboat stations I visited in June. You showed me so much warmth and support and, for that, I’m eternally grateful. Back to my own ‘missions’ now with the @rnliqueensferry crew photograph. I’m not sure that there’s ever been a more epic backdrop or that there’ll be another quite so grand! And thank you to @accidentallywesanderson for sharing my video of the train passing over the bridge. 13th June 2019: It’s rare that I introduce new work from a station with the boathouse view — it’s sometimes difficult to appreciate their full glory on a smartphone screen (you need to see the original plate or a print for that ). But this one is so blissfully minimal that I think it can be appreciated at any size. This is also a photograph that starkly reminds us that the job is the same whatever the station. No matter what the type of lifeboat, the launching mechanism or the nature of the coastline, a band of dedicated volunteers will drop everything at a moment’s notice to launch their lifeboat and help somebody in difficulty at sea. Ladies and gentlemen, je vous présente the view from @rnli_kinghorn on a dreich Thursday morning, a handmade photograph on 12x10 inch glass. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #kinghorn

First portrait of Mission 18: My journey around the Forth coast got off to a fine start on Tuesday 11th June with this portrait of Michael Bruce, @rnli_anstruther Coxswain. I usually have an idea or two up my sleeve, but rather than “impose” it, I like to ask the person I’m about to photograph whether or not they have any preconceptions about how their portrait might look. It’s a collaboration, you see. A dialogue. I’m not “taking” photographs. We’re making them together. In the case of Michael’s portrait, though, it was very satisfying that we both had the same idea — the station’s beautiful old Mersey class ‘Kingdom of Fife’ sitting in the background, peaceful but always ready. See the full set from Anstruther in the web galleries and on the brand new ‘South East Scotland’ print page. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #anstruther #merseyclass

Last weekend at Eyemouth lifeboat station was a perfect end to Mission 18 in so many ways. I’ve often thought how excellent it would be to film from the air, so that you can really see what’s involved when it comes to marching back and forth between Neena (my mobile darkroom ) and the camera. On Saturday, I finally got my chance thanks to Coxswain Andrew Jamieson ( @andrewjam1 ) who’s a dab hand with his drone. As you can see, he did a great job while I made Adam’s portrait in the wheelhouse door of Helen Hastings. Check out my previous post for a glimpse into another example...and you can see even more in my new 7 minute film on Patreon that shows exactly what it’s like to go to sea on this incredible vessel. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #eyemouth #rnlishannon #neenaspotting #dometic #mobilelivingmadeeasy #drone #dronestagram

Hot off the press: This is the newest plate on the project, made just a few moments ago. It’s a beauty, IIDSSM, depicting the view from @rnli_anstruther So busy and detailed for such a gentle scene: the ‘Lifeboat Launching’ sign; the St. Ayles skiffs (this is where they’re from ); the slipway; the floodlights; the guard rails; the lighthouse...the list goes on. And true to form, the obligatory seagull is perched on a lamppost over on the breakwater. The process is working beautifully too. I’m incredibly grateful for that — it’s always a thrill to make an immaculate handmade photograph on glass. Anyway, time to pack up now and move on to @rnli_kinghorn ready for tomorrow. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #anstruther

On 10th June 2018, I was in Buckie. Hard to believe that was 30 lifeboat stations ago! Exactly a year later, I’m back on the east Scottish coast in @rnli_anstruther (called ‘Ainster’ locally ) at the start of Mission 18 and ready for my 131st station tomorrow. Well, I’m almost ready — after the four hour drive north from Newcastle, just the small matter of polishing ten sheets of glass, which usually takes an hour or so. I’d better get on it! The story of the brave, selfless @rnli lifeboat volunteers is told in many ways. Books, magazines, social media and me are just a few. In recent years, there’s also a BBC television programme that you may have seen called ‘Saving Lives At Sea’, a fly-on-the-wall documentary combining onboard footage with moving interviews. I love meeting many of the extraordinary people who’ve been featured and, of course, they often appear in my own photographs. During my visit to Conwy on the North Welsh coast in April, I had my first opportunity to make a specific ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ portrait of Jasmin, Greg and Alan. You might remember Greg and Alan recounting the story of a rescue in the river outside the station. Jasmin, Greg’s daughter, also brilliantly told viewers what it was like to have a Dad who volunteers on the lifeboat. Powerful stuff. And don’t they all look great together outside the station? #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #wales #conwy #rnlifamily #savinglivesatsea

Vintage or contemporary? Here’s something you may like to ponder over your holiday weekend: At very first glance, my photographs look like they were made a long time ago, don’t they? After all, I’m using a process invented by the Victorians. But after a second or two, people come to realise that they must have been made recently. Why? Because they start spotting the visual clues: modern equipment, clothing, buildings and even the excellent fact that many lifeboats are crewed by women, which certainly wasn’t the case back in the 1800s. When describing my photographs, some mistakenly call them “vintage”. This happens a lot in the press, for example, with headlines like “Vintage photographs of lifeboat crew snapped with Victorian camera”. It’s easily done, of course, and it’s not the easiest experience to try and describe to a new audience. However, my photographs aren’t vintage at all — in the moments they appear on glass, one of the really overwhelming sensations for whoever’s witnessing the magical process is that the pictures are utterly brand new. They look old but they’re not! Very confusing for the poor old brain box. This is something that people seem to enjoy trying to get their heads round. When I discuss it on my journey, I often mention that we wouldn’t say to a painter, “That’s a beautiful ‘vintage’ painting you’ve just made!” Ditto drawing, pottery or sculpting — all processes that have been around longer than photography. Anyway, there’s a great word that describes what’s going on here: the strange sensation of something appearing to be from an older period than it actually is, and that word is “anachronistic”. So, even though the process dates from 1851, my photographs are among the most contemporary on the planet! Food for thought? From Howth to Rhyl: Here you see my very first ‘Mission Grid’. I’m always trying to think of new ways to show you my journey, to keep it interesting and convey just how big it is. Also, to illustrate why I call my trips ‘missions’ rather than simply ‘trips’. I hope you generally get a sense of that but this is perhaps the simplest way that I’ve thought of so far — to put all the new photographs into one grid in the order that I visited the stations, from Howth in Ireland to Rhyl in Wales. So, here you have it. After four weeks or so in front of computers, 54 glass plate photographs from 11 lifeboat stations and nearly 5 weeks working on the coast in March and April. Some might say this is a body of work in itself but, remember, this is less than 10% of the project so far and it’s one more photograph than my entire exhibition at Poole Museum…and this doesn’t include all the private commissions I made along the way to help fund the journey! The grid might also go some way to illustrate why there’s very little downtime when I return home. It takes about as long as the mission itself to scan the glass plates and publish them on the website (only once I’ve built the new web pages to host them, of course ). I could go on! Suffice to say, I’m feeling pretty chuffed to be up-to-date this evening. Tomorrow’s a new day, when it’ll be time to crack on with the print orders. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #hellyhansen #ireland #wales #anglesey #portrait #withcouragenothingisimpossible #savinglivesatsea #missiongrid

Honouring the humble boarding boat: At many stations, it’s impractical for the lifeboat to be moored alongside a dedicated pontoon, so the crew need a smaller boarding boat to reach it from the shore. At stations like Dun Laoghaire (pronounced ‘Dunn Leary’ ), the boarding boat becomes a large part of the mechanic’s working life. After all, people like Colley in this clip still need to carry out their daily and weekly checks wherever the boat is moored! This moment was a real highlight with Colley when we tried something new on my journey — seeing if we could make a portrait to highlight this aspect of his working life and as a tribute to the humble boarding boat. A wet plate mini adventure. Yesterday, I published all the Dun Laoghaire photographs on the website and completed the County Dublin page. Coming up: Remember the wee clip of @rnli_wicklow mechanic Brendan Copeland listening to the recording of the Tyne class lifeboat he’d looked after for 30 years? Well, he’s a very humble chap, initially shying away from having his portrait made. I’m glad we were able to win him round to make the 12x10 inch glass plate you see pictured here. Another beautiful moment in history and one of the photographs soon to be published on the website along with the rest of work I made in Ireland. As an aside, you’ll see Brendan’s wearing the new @hellyhansen all weather kit. This was the first mission where HH was the norm and Musto the rarity. The power of sound at the end of an era: It's an emotional weekend coming up for @rnli_wicklow Before leaving the station exactly one month ago, I edited the sound recording of Annie Blaker that I'd made the previous day. After 30 years' service, she's the last operational Tyne class on the network. I wanted the recording to be a parting gift for the man I knew would love it the most — Brendan Copeland, the Station Mechanic who’s looked after 'Annie Blaker' for all that time. I handed Brendan the headphones. Watching him listen to the recording was a joy. Furthermore, it’s the first time the station are aware of her legendary Detroit engines being recorded like this. After an emotional listen, Brendan said: “Beautiful isn’t it? How would you get better than that? The little growl on her. Lovely.” I couldn’t have wished for a better compliment. One day, my sound recordings will be part of the completed project. While I’m thinking about the best ways to incorporate them into the book and final exhibition, I publish previews of the work in progress to my patrons who, in turn, are helping to fund the project, enabling me to reach that final lifeboat station in a few years' time. You can become a patron too and hear my podcasts for the price of a monthly cuppa, including the very same recording that Brendan heard. Well, that’s it. Suddenly the sun is setting on Mission 17. After nearly five weeks, eleven stations, two countries and a splendid final day with @rnlirhyl , it’s nearly time to head home to Kath, my boys and the rest of my loved ones. This trip somehow feels particularly epic. To refresh your memories, it started with the @rnli_doverlifeboat supper followed by The One Show filming in Ramsgate (still waiting on the transmission date, by the way ). The first station I photographed was @howthrnli on the east coast of Ireland after making that gruelling drive through the night to reach Holyhead in time for the ferry. If you have a spare moment, you might like to scroll back through my feed as I’ve just done. You’ll see special times with special folk making our very own good news story together in these tempestuous times. There’s so much to reflect upon and savour. I feel privileged to have met so many incredible people and to have made wonderful new friends — I’ll enjoy thinking about you all as I make the 200 mile journey back to Newcastle tomorrow. Thank you to everybody who’s helped along the way from the lifeboat volunteers to those that have spread the word, put me up...and put up with me! Such an incredible boathouse here in @rnli_llandudno One of the most modern on the network, it houses a D Class inshore lifeboat (ILB ) and a state-of-the-art Shannon Class all weather lifeboat (ALB ). It also successfully encapsulates the feeling of the station’s history and heritage — for example, you can see the original service boards from the old station hanging on the wall. Alun Pari Huws (one of the DLAs here ) has gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure the visitor experience is engaging too. He’s really succeeded in his mission, ensuring the station is permanently shipshape too! Llandudno really is worth a visit if you get the chance. The icing on the cake for this particular visit is that The Lifeboat Enthusiasts’ Society AGM is being held here this afternoon. Huge thanks to the lifeboat volunteers of Conwy for helping me to make more special plates yesterday, culminating in this crew portrait complete with the station’s D Class lifeboat. As you can see, Conwy Castle provides a stunning backdrop. After nearly four weeks on the road, it’s time to prepare the glass for @rnli_llandudno , the penultimate station of Mission 17. Llandudno is a gorgeous spot just around the coast from Conwy where the crew have an epic new boathouse and state-of-the-art Shannon Class lifeboat. Stay tuned...I’ll keep adding to my Story shortly. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #wales #conwy #conwycastle

Quick march: About to make the Moelfre crew portrait on Friday evening. The light was quickly fading in the gloomy weather but we managed to make a beautiful plate...and look at the amazing turnout! More scenes in my Story. I’ll be working at Conwy lifeboat station all day tomorrow if you fancy popping along to say hello. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #behindthescenes #moelfre #anglesey #wales

Lifeboat crew? Check. Lighthouse? Check. Land Rover? Check. Breakwater? Check. Reflections? Check. Hound? Check. General nautical feel? Check. A closer look at the plate in yesterday’s video clip. It was such a great mini-adventure making this portrait with @holyhead_lifeboat — and a finished result that made us all very happy. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #holyhead #wales #thisisanadventure

It’s hard to find words for today but I’ll try my best: I can’t thank @holyhead_lifeboat enough for the unbridled support they’ve shown me over the last couple of weeks — as I passed through Holyhead on my way to Ireland (after that gruelling drive from Ramsgate ) and then all day long today. Many people took time off work so that they could be around for my visit, a very moving gesture in itself. They’ve thrown themselves into it wholeheartedly...as a result, we’ve had excellent fun and every photograph’s been a cracker. In particular, making the crew portrait was a fantastic adventure from start to finish with a glass plate to match the experience. This video only begins to touch the sides of an amazing couple of hours while we made the crew portrait but it’ll give you a good idea...a few more scenes in my Story too. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #behindthescenes #holyhead #wales #neenaspotting #thisisanadventure

The days are rattling by at the moment and another station visit is suddenly over. As you can see, we set a truly glorious sandy stage for yesterday’s crew portrait with @trearddurbayrnli And how amazing to see them respond at lightning speed to an emergency call from @hmcoastguard later that evening (see previous post ). Now I’m the other side of Holy Island in Holyhead, preparing for @holyhead_lifeboat tomorrow. More scenes from the last 24 hours in my Story including a stay at the perfect @ty_bae_trearddur_bay #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #behindthescenes #trearddurbay #wales #holyisland #anglesey

The power of audio: Before leaving @rnli_wicklow , I made time to edit the sound recording of their Tyne class lifeboat. I wanted it to be a parting gift for the man who I knew would love it the most — Brendan Copeland, the Station Mechanic who’s looked after RNLB Annie Blaker for 30 years. This is the moment I handed Brendan the headphones. Watching him listen to the recording was a joy and, furthermore, it’s the first time the station are aware of her legendary Detroit engines being recorded like this. “Beautiful isn’t it? How would you get better than that? The little growl on her. Lovely.” Brendan says. That is so satisfying for me — I couldn’t have wished for a better compliment. One day, my sound recordings will be part of the completed project. While I’m thinking about the best ways to incorporate them, I publish previews of the work in progress to my patrons. You can become a patron too and hear them for the price of a monthly cuppa, including the very same recording that Brendan’s listening to here. Depending on the station, boarding boats can be a big part of lifeboat logistics. If the lifeboat’s on a mooring buoy, it’s the smaller boat that crew use to reach it from the shore. As you can imagine, at Dun Laoghaire the boarding boat is a real feature of the Station Mechanic’s daily routine, so I was intrigued to see if Collie and I could make a plate that represented this aspect of his lifeboat life. It worked a treat and was fun to make (see previous post ). This one will go down as a ‘Mission Extra’ but we also made an excellent portrait of Colley, which I’ll share with you another time. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #dunlaoghaire #ireland #lifeboatlife

1-2-3: I’ve made it to the 123rd station on my journey, Dun Laoghaire (pronounced ‘Dunn Leary’ ). It’s my final Irish station for the moment before I head to North Wales on Friday. Looking forward to working here tomorrow — I’ve even been a good boy and polished the glass already before it gets too late. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #ireland #dunlaoghaire #sunset
