Time for an angry post.. This irritates me to no end, the person in white trying to call the goat over to get a selfie. The others on their single mindedness to get as close as they could for a photo were surrounding it. I don't understand how people are so ignorant that these are wild animals . #publiclandshateyou #shame #keepyourdistance #notapettingzoo #wildlife #glaciernps

The ten essentials. Do you know what they are? Not everyone does, which makes me sad. I use this image of the Narrows as shortly before this photo was taken I encountered a young adventurer that clearly had no idea what they were and was in pretty bad shape. I wrote a little blog post about them and hope it helps on your next adventure, but also added what’s being dubbed the @11thessential. In any event, they are: -a map or navigation -sun protection -insulation -a light source -first aid -Fire -tools -food -water -emergency shelter -a trash bag These items will help you Adventure Responsibly! #leaveitbetter #adventureresponsibly #utah #zion #zionnationalpark #tenessentials #wildernesspreparedness #emergency #publiclandshateyou #leavenotrace #environmentalstewardship #naturefirst #pictureline #werutah #westbysouthwest #outsiders #donttrashutah #dontbeatrashhole

This world is scary. I’ve been debating on facts and stories, history and politics, society and corruption for the past 10 months. And the thing is, the more I read, the more I listen, the more I learn... the less I know. For the past couple of days my head has been a total mess. Not only because I hadn’t slept for a little over 30h but because I was completely mindboggled by the fact that I’d only found out about what was happening just a few miles away from me through friends back in Europe. “It’s the forest in Mato Grosso” I told @serusaqe when she sent me the first news I saw, I said the same thing to @claudia_gn I was sure the news must have been some kind of sensationalist media attack against president Bolsonaro’s environmental measures (or the lack there of ). I’d heard of the fires in Mato Grosso and other areas, which included some in the Amazon Forest; and although a forest fire should always be alarming, it’s something that unfortunately happens every year, and all around the world! Just like Paris’ Notre Damm’s ludicrous media sensation, I wondered why news on Brazil’s fire exploded but not the ones in Indonesia or other affected countries. It took some time for me to come to terms with the fact that it was happening, and that it was just as serious as the first news I’d read, but I still can’t understand why it took us so long to find out. This world is scary, and not just because one of this worlds’ most important rainforest and ecosystems is burning down to ashes, but because someone wanted it to. #amazonrainforest #amazon #florestaamazonica #brazil #brasil #fire #incendio #fogos #savetheplanet #publiclandshateyou #naturelovers #realnews #prayforamazonia #amazonia #rainforest #naturephotography #awareness #travelaware #fightforyourworld #wonderfulworld

Day 17/28: Today I learned that pretty much everybody who takes that famous Instagram photo in front of Moraine Lake are really just a bunch of people who have no regard for nature and don’t mind walking right past the “stay on trail. don’t trample vegetation sign,” so I sat my happy butt down on this barrier and still got a great photo. #morainelake #banffnationalpark #banffcanada #adventure_culture #adventurenthusiasts #nature_perfection #optoutside #outdooradventurephotos #hikingadventures #hiking_daily #outdoorphotography #campingculture #campingcollective #allaboutadventures #wildernessnation #beatenpathco #getoutside #theoutbound #keepitwild #stayandwander #welivetoexplore #outdoorwomen #travelstoke #idhikethat #hikerslit #radgirlscollective #sheadventures #womenwhoexplore #publiclandshateyou #fromthetrail

If ya don’t know, I’m obsessed with protecting our public lands and it’s hard to protect what you don’t know so my husband and I have made a goal to visit all our national parks. 🇺🇸 However, when we set out to do this we did not realize that some of them don’t have roads or even trails! Gates of the Arctic NP was not easy to get to nor was it an easy hike but it had to be one of the coolest camping trips I’ve ever done. #gatesofthearctic #nationalparksusa #publicland #publiclandshateyou #keepitpublic #keepyourtinyhandsoffourpubliclands #nationalparks

Museum Fire Origin. This is in no way official, but is based on the photo(s ) I took from West Elden in my last post. The saddle where Ginger trail points downhill is the reference point, with the fire showing smoke from the first peak west from the saddle. No trails access this point and from a hike up in the prior week it appeared this area had not been a part of the logging operation. The west wall of the canyon was thick with heavy down timber. The peak maybe less so, but no direct trail access to this point begs the question, “what exactly happened here?”. . .Unfounded accusations left in the comments will be deleted. . . . #museumfire #campresponsibly #publiclandshateyou

We humans love nature. But sometimes we can love nature a little too much. These pictures can attest to that. Let's not love nature to death. A couple people might not make a difference but hundreds and thousands do. Remember the #leavenotrace principals: 1. Plan ahead and prepare 2. Travel and camp on disabled surfaces 3. Dispose of waste properly 4. Leave what you find 5. Minimize campfire impacts 6. Respect wildlife 7. Be considerate of other visitors.

🌲I've been thinking a lot about how social media has changed our landscapes and has increased foot traffic on trails. How does one be inclusive of everyone, while still be mindful of protecting nature? . I've seen so many instagrammers and Facebook members who share photos and trail reports to huge groups of people online for likes... and then inevitably, I see a post the following weekend or so of people complaining of trash and damage done on that same trail. . It happened at Summit lake this weekend. A member posted about it with a detailed trail report in multiple groups, they got a TON of likes and shares, and then a different member of the same group found heaps of garbage and human 💩 on the trails this weekend. This hike used to be moderately traveled, and now with people posting social media photos and geotagging, it has absolutely led to the destruction of these special places. . . And yet, how do we balance sharing photos of these beautiful places with people and also be responsible? How do we make sure we aren't the privileged gate keepers of these special spots? How do we help someone with less time on their hands or who may not have the access we do get the same opportunities? . . I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I dont geotag my spots with the exact location. If I find a special spot I dont share it unless I'm friends with the person. Too many places I've found that are beautiful have been taken over by people who want the "likes". But I guess aren't we all here on social media for likes? I'm probably overthinking this, but I've seen this conversation brought up many times and I dont think theres a right answer yet. . . You tell me, what do you think about geotagging and giving equal access to beautiful trails but also being responsible stewards of nature? 🌲 . #publiclandshateyou #leavenotrace

Pictured: Joy. Friendship. Accomplishment. This hike to Eaton Canyon Falls has stuck with me for some time. We were greeted by so many people, picnics, poses and pups, and surrounded by several languages. Kicks were fly and iPhones were out. • As the warmth of laughter filled the canyon, I thought about voices in the public lands space who would say people are just here for the 'gram, and shame on them; or decry the degradation of the trail, which had graffiti and social off-shoots. Voices who would delegitimize—even demonize—the experiences present. To think people just hiked up a canyon and through a dozen creek crossings for a picture, without gaining more from the experience, is an insult. Experience builds appreciation. Appreciation builds dedication. • The joy of my fellow hikers rushed over me and filled me in a way no solitary vista ever has. As if I were standing under the falls, being drenched with joy. I sat smiling with mist-disguised-tears trickling down my cheeks as my hiking partner laughed alongside our neighbors, comically oblivious to the Ellie Blick moment happening stage right. We walked back laughing with our new trail friends, slipping off logs that may not have been the “correct” log crossing. We couldn’t tell. • We need to protect our outdoors from much bigger threats than each other. Yes we all play a role, yes we all have an impact, and yes our public lands deserve more education than they're getting. But policing these experiences won't protect a thing. We need to be on the same team. Recruiting happens year-round and there’s no roster limit. 🌎 • • • 5.25.19 On Tongva native land. #protectpubliclands #keepitpublic #optoutside #everyonesoutdoors #diversifyoutdoors #generationwild #hiking #letshike #publiclandshateyou #leavenotrace #takeonlypictures #joy #LAoutdoors #eatoncanyonfalls

#nowildflowerswereharmed I photographed this beautiful piece of nature by lying on the hot cement of my Dad's driveway in Nor Cal as big fat bumblebees buzzed past me. He's filled his yard with native plants over the years, and the #bees LOVE it. If you want to help the bees, first, don't crush their food for the 'gram, and second, find out what plants are native to your area, and plant them! Reposted from @wildutahhatesyou - Soooo… apparently @zachtesta is too cool for the rules on this permitted trail within the National Park Service Boundary. It’s strictly a No Fly Zone and these drone shots were taken illegally. Zach’s words; “people lose it because it’s on the other side of the line with legality.” That’s one way to put it I guess. The unfortunate part is that between Zach’s account and the hubs ( @ig_unitedstates_ & @weliveelevated ) that have reposted, it’s an audience of about 150k that now 1-know where this is because it’s geotagged and 2-want the same shot for the Gram. Our Public Land Administrators don’t have the resources to police this so we must act responsibly to protect access to these wild places and not detract from the experience of others. Please don’t come back to Utah Zach… you’re not welcome. I’m guessing it’ll be a little harder for you to get an NPS/ BLM hiking permit the next time you try. …………………… We promote good stewardship of our public lands. Get after it but tread lightly, pack out your trash, stay on the trail, obey land use rules, no geotagging, and be a nice person. #keepitwild #lifeelevated #getoutside #publiclandshateyou #glencanyon #wildutahhatesyou #protectyourpubliclands #leaveitbetter #werutah #adventureresponsibly #usinterior #optoutside @nationalparkservice @glencanyonnps @specialagent_nps

I usually enjoy my Tuesday hike-day, but today was a bit of an exception. As beautiful as this place is, it was made less so with the volumes of graffiti and trash I encountered along the whole 4 mile stretch. I packed out a whole backpack full of trash on the way back and each graffiti tag left me feeling less fulfilled in nature than I usually am. We are destroying our planet as a species - do we have to add to that as individuals? As much as I like some of the places I go here in CA, I am constantly reminded of how many people live here and how destructive it can be - no parking, insane traffic, permitted day hiking, off leash dogs chasing wildlife...the list builds. Done with my rant. Back to your regularly scheduled Kardashian programming, LA. 🇬🇧 Day 2 of our tour from Uyuni, Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. We left the salt flats and crossed some of the most impressing deserts, lagoons and nature I’ve seen! I couldn’t stop smiling. We saw flamingos, foxes and viscachas; we saw colorful mountains and colorful lagoons. Saw endless deserts and amazing views! It was also, however, the only day we saw someone disrespect the indications and the local surroundings. People crossing the designated path to get closer to flamingos who clearly wanted nothing to do with them, as they all walked and flew away; people crossing the designated path for a photo, for a video. #anythingforthegram right? Wrong. . . Keep Banff Wild!!!! This account was created from a discussion by locals about how the places we love in be mountain parks have become very saturated with selfie takers, tourists and Instagram adventurers who don’t always consider the impacts that they have on this land. Sometimes it even seems like something out of Black Mirror (especially the Lake Louise lakeshore!! )! This account has not been created to shame anyone, but rather to educate folks about conservation, the impacts of humans on the land, and how to keep the spaces we love safe for animals, vegetation and humans alike. We have nothing against visiting these beautiful spaces (or taking selfies! ), but aim to educate about how to have less of an impact on the places we love.

Every year, I find a dozen or so balloons in some otherwise wild and pristine areas. Releasing balloons as part of celebration has been a tradition in this country for eons. I can remember a few times in my youth partaking myself. I’d like to hope that this tradition is on its way out, but it appears to be alive and well. The moat has low water levels as does the #riverrhine but its carp residents are safe in a deeper section of the moat, created intentionally. There is however a tourist problem, when the castle is damaged and the carp are fed pizza; and a dog-owner problem, where shy wildlife, including a family of #deer , is attacked by dogs without their leashes. Capitol Reef, and the surrounding area is easily one of the most beautiful places on earth. However, I have to say that I was super disappointed with many of the people I saw in Capitol Reef this weekend. They were harassing wildlife, bringing pets into wilderness areas, and parking wherever they wanted. Access to the National Parks isn’t a right. It’s a privilege for those who love, respect, and are willing to contribute to their preservation. I wish that everyone would treat our parks like the sacred places that they are, not just another amusement to be consumed. @capitolreefnps #capitolreefnationalpark #publiclands #conservation #optoutside #getoutside #nationalparks #publiclandshateyou

My Monday starts at 3:45 in the morning. It's rough, I don't/can't sleep before it starts. The perk is that I'm done at 11:30, and have the rest of the day to catch up. The point of this is, that going by my I.G. impressions, you would think I don't work...but in reality, I work harder than most people I know. You see, I work my butt off for 6 months, so I can spend the rest of the year exploring the world. I never felt comfortable with the typical U.S.A. mantra, that your work is your purpose. I think it's a scam to get us all to slave away for a flawed and greedy system. So I maximize my profits as fast as possible, I budget, I save, and then I can let go and have total freedom for half of the year. I work diligently to pay off my debts, and I live minimally to get it done. Working for eternity is what we were told to do, and now Instagram has skewed it even further by having everybody try and tell some meaningful origin story behind getting paid. It bums me out, it is taking advantage of our freedom, and our autonomy. I hate that this platform is turning into one giant ad. Look, we all have to get paid, hopefully you kind of like what you do for a living, but love living your life more. . . . . . . . #instaad #liveyourbestlife #liveauthentic #livewhatyoulove #docoolshit #travel #vagabond #weworktoomuch #learntorelax #getoutside #travelcoach #budgeting #minimalismus #usa #stopsucking #stopsellingout #neverstopexploring #capitalism #tetons #themountainsarecalling #mountains #mountainlifestyle #publiclandshateyou #stopsellingourland #keepitwild

[🇪🇸 in the comments] Here’s an unpopular opinion for you. The more I travel, the more I learn, the happier I become and the angrier I get. That’s probably why I found so much comfort in the desert. I’m finding this world as extraordinary as it is unfair, unsafe and just plain stupid. I’d never been so aware of the impact the mere existence of humanity has in this world, both positive and so extremely negatively. I’d never been so aware of how utterly ignorant modern day society is. I’m also specially amazed at the modern day tourist. I’m mindblown by how local tourism is so damn clueless on how to respect their own nature, at how signs like “don’t touch the animals” or “don’t litter” need to be everywhere and still they’re not respected. I’m so baffled at how foreign tourists are so extremely disrespectful, with both the locals and their public lands. When did we become so entitled? We storm into foreign countries like Cristobal Colon and expect people to bow at us. We, the tourists, are everywhere. And we massively invade cities, furiously walking down every pretty street and into every pretty building, be it religious or spiritual, as if it were only that - a pretty building we can take pretty photos in. We expect the city to adapt to our wants and needs and we make sure they know we’re here, with our tripods and cameras in hand, white socks on open sandals, making no effort to speak the language but expecting to be understood and respected. And while we’re out getting pissed on some random party hostel, or sipping a glass of wine on a vegan restaurant’s rooftop, we forget to “leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories” and that our presence in these countries makes a great deal of difference, we just stopped caring if it’s positive or not, as long as it’s positive for us. That’s why accounts like @publiclandshateyou @thedarksideoftulum and @adventurebagcrew are so important! I’ve learnt a great deal and hope other can learn too. I still have a lot to say on this matter, just not enough space. You agree or disagree? Let me know your thoughts too!

*Requiem for a Limb* I’ve received word that a very particular Narrowleaf Cottonwood limb has come down in Death Valley National Park. It’s at least the second iconic tree in DVNP that has been felled in a little more than a year (the other a well-known and heavily IG’d Mesquite tree on sand dunes ). This canyon takes a thrashing from flash floods and trees don’t live forever, but climbing evidence was all over the tree and in the heavily impacted ground and roots at its feet. Like everywhere else, visitation to this canyon has dramatically increased. I’ve been closely watching and photographing this limb for some time as gravity and tree climbers drove it downward. I’d love to blame only gravity for its demise. #deathvalleynationalpark #publiclandshateyou #deathvalleyphotography #deathvalley #deathvalleynp #waterfall #waterinthedesert

REBIRTH 🌺 What I've been thinking a lot about lately is the fact that we only see what's right in front of us sometimes. We see flowers and gardens as beautiful in the moment, but only value them temporarily. ⠀ ⠀ We're so quick to forget that everything has an ugly season, a season of growth, a season of rebirth. What is beautiful right now might have been awful behind the scenes. What's blooming may have died weeks prior, or taken months and months to grow.⠀ ⠀ I'm sure you've heard this many times before, but it's so true — you are blooming — even if and when it's behind-the-scenes.⠀ ⠀ Sometimes you're going to flower and shine. Sometimes people will stop and smile with reverence. And sometimes you'll be like the flowers after the Super Bloom, and far less magnificent on the outside.⠀ ⠀ But that doesn't mean you aren't moving closer to where you're supposed to be, WHO you're supposed to be.⠀ ⠀ ____⠀ A few months ago, California had the #superbloom As recent San Diego resident (almost three years! ) it's been so exciting to see the rush to visit the flowers and learn things about them that I didn't know before (like the bloom only happens every 30ish years! ) I've also learned a lot more about the environment and how our impact RIGHT NOW can effect generations (of people and flowers ) to come.⠀ ⠀ When we walk off the paths, when we take our 'influencer pictures' among the flowers, when we think it's "not a big deal" to ignore ranger signs and blaze our own trails (even dirt trails without flowers! ) we are damaging future flower seeds and ruining not only the opportunity to see these beautiful pieces of nature in the future, but the environment itself.⠀ ⠀ This is just a reminder that beautiful things are blooming — always and often — under the surface. The California poppies, and you. Protect nature, protect your heart, and be patient with your growth.⠀ ⠀ You are not done.⠀ There is room for rebirth. 🌸⠀ ____⠀ #superbloom2019 #superbloom #dontdoomthebloom #publiclandshateyou #wecanttred #leavenotrace #youareblooming #bloomwhereplanted #bepatient #marisadonnelly #writersofinstagram #writersofig #youwillbeokay

I’ve been thinking about this for a while and it’s been eating away at me. I’m gonna re-boot my YouTube channel. I’ll be creating various short videos documenting outdoor skills and micro adventures. One of the main points of the channel, though, will be to share how to accumulate enough gear and equipment to camp or hike efficiently WITHOUT going broke doing it. My ultimate goal would obviously be to benefit enough from this venture to be able to afford more adventures, but all while remaining budget friendly. I hope some of you will follow along. My first video will probably be in June, documenting a quick overnight hammock camp and breakfast. #bushcraft #budgetbushcraft #outdoorsman #hiking #adventures #microadventures #keepnaturewild #trailettiquette #friendlytrailsinitiative #publiclandshateyou #leavenotrace
