Pika Prepping: This is one of my favorite mountain creatures, the American Pika. These small rabbit-relatives are about the size of a guinea pig, and are well-camouflaged to their surroundings, so are often only seen when they move. They live high in the mountains at or above timberline, often found in rock slides and scree piles, and can be heard a long distance away with their shrill high-pitched territorial cries. . If you get a chance to see them, sit for a few minutes and watch their fascinating behaviors. Since they do not hibernate, they have to spend most of the warm months gathering vegetation to sustain themselves through Colorado's long, harsh snowy winter. This cutie stopped just long enough to pose for a photo with some food in his mouth before scurrying back to his food storage vault in the rocks behind him. . Wildlife is just one of my favorite things about photographing the Rocky Mountains. If you'd like to explore some of the most beautiful territory in the San Juan mountains of Colorado with me, with a focus on capturing the beauty and fall color all around us, click on the link in my bio to find out more about my photo workshop tours. Next one is October 4-7, 2019 and one spot is still available! . . . . . . . #pika #wildlifephotography #wildlife #colorado #colorado_creative #wildlifeconservation #wildlifetour #wildlife_photography #wildlifeonearth #wildlifeperfection #wildlife_shots #coloradophotography #coloradountamed #coloradogram #natgeoyourshot #earthpix2019 #ColoradoShared #wildernessnation #ProtectYourAdventure #ShareTheExperience #OurPlanetDaily #photographerorgfeature #modernoutdoors #OurWild #WildPlanet #nikondaily #outtherecolorado #YourShotPhotographer #ColoradoLive #livelifeoutsideco

Burrowing owls are sometimes called “howdy birds” thanks to the way they seem to nod in greeting from the entrances of their burrows in prairie-dog colonies. These grassland raptors spend most of their time underground, emerging at dusk and during the evening to hunt for small mammals, insects and amphibians. #CreatureFeature _ 📷: Ben Jiang

"When you spend a night under the stars listening to water that contains its native inhabitants, you will feel how it all rolls into one. The miles of travel, the laughter with friends, the view of a canyon, the smell of the sage and trees, the breeze cooling you down, the cold water flowing over the rocks, and the rise of a cutthroat to a fly will soothe your soul and make time stand still." “We must not only protect the country side and save it from destruction, we must restore what has been destroyed and salvage the beauty and charm of our cities … Once our natural splendor is destroyed, it can never be recaptured. And once man can no longer walk with beauty or wonder at nature, his spirit will wither and his sustenance be wasted.” - Lyndon B. Johnson Spent a little time over the weekend enjoying our public lands in an area that could use some reminding what responsible use is. The mountains were beautiful, stream was awesome and we caught some fish but we also saw some disrespect to our resources. It is Public Lands Month so take the time to go outside and enjoy them. While you are there give back by cleaning up some trash, say thanks to an employee that helps care for them and ask how you can volunteer. Contact your local ranger office to see what projects you can be involved with because there is always something going on. Another great way is to support conservation groups fighting to protect these your public lands like @backcountryhunters and Anglers. #publiclandsproud

Met some new species yesterday and they were mean as hell! Kokanee are like the mini bulldogs of the river, chasing and snapping at flies all day but if they bite its a good one. It takes a solid set to stick in these boney mouths and I was lucky enough to connect with a few. I think the locals would be blown away that they could actually catch them in the mouth. #kokanee

Info for those who just started following us. The Western Native Trout Initiative (WNTI ) is a program of the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA ) and a nationally recognized partnership under the National Fish Habitat Partnership program that works cooperatively across 12 Western states to conserve (protect, restore, and recover ) 21 native trout and char species across their historic range. Since its inception in 2006, WNTI has directed more than $35 million in federal, public and private funds to support 161 priority native trout conservation projects. WNTI and partners have removed 96 barriers to fish passage, reconnected or improved 1,199 miles of native trout habitat and put in place 35 protective fish barriers to conserve important native trout populations. 📸: @conatives

This stream was treating me so well that I thought it was a good idea to make some one handed long roll casts while filming. Luckily I didn’t drop my phone in the water but I came close. Haha. I love this type of stream that I refer to as spot and stalk fishing. The small water often allows you to see what you are casting at and its up to you to present the fly in a way that doesn’t spoke the fish. In this case I noticed a riser from a distance and decided to roll cast one right up to it. Sometimes it works out like in the video and sometimes you catch a tree. #smallstreamfishing

Colorado has two species of trout in the Challenge: Colorado River Cutthroat Trout, and Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout,. Check out our maps on westernnativetroutchallenge.org to the right to find the water body, trout regulations specific to that water body, and any additional notes. IMPORTANT: ONLY streams and lakes indicated on this map with Rio Grande and Colorado River Cutthroat Trout populations are eligible for the Western Native Trout Challenge. Almost time to go fish with @tim_sickles again. This time chasing natives. The first introduction of the brown trout into the United States was by the US Fish Commission in 1883 in Michigan State. In Michigan, brown trout eggs were raised at the Northville hatchery. The fish were then released into the Pere Marquette River in the Northern area of the state. -USGS. When I lived in Michigan I fished the PM river and caught some of this lineage which is the oldest in our country whichwas pretty cool. In a previous post I mentioned the need to recover our native species but how brown trout still have a place in management. In 2001, USGS estimated that the annual US trout industry was almost $80m. With non native trout being the more prevalent in trout fisheries management you could say they bring in a hefty chunk of that money. They are fun to catch and easily adapt to conditions making them hardier than most natives. My question is as we transition some waters to focus on native trout recovery do you feel this will affect the economy that revolves around fishing? Will it have an impact or will people just continue fishing as normal? #browntrout 📸: @tim_sickles / @whiskeyandwindknots

My favorite small water fish from spring that I caught the same day the kids caught their first cutthroat. I love the variation from creek to creek on these Bear River Cutthroat. We had caught some fish in a run we always have luck in but this guy was sitting right at the plunge under a bush. I snuck up on it then shot a bow cast right into the perfect spot and he didn’t give one crap about it. Luckily my second cast the fish smashed my fly. #chasingnatives

More from our FAQ section pf the Western Native Trout Challenge website. ———- Do I have to use the Challenge fish maps and information provided in the maps? The 12 state fish and wildlife agencies that are participating in this program created detailed GIS based maps to assist you in locating these native trout species in their native or historic watersheds. We hope you use the maps to guide your research, but also hope you research the fishing in each local community. Found the craziest little creek in an out of the way corner of Montana. Big grayling and even bigger cutts inhabited this tiny meadow stream. . I've been looking at this blue line on the map for months, wondering if it was worth the drive. Nothing is written about it, and no one I've talked to has been. We finally decided to make the trek and it was like nowhere I've fished before. . This is why I love fly fishing new water. It almost feels like treasure hunting, and that day we hit the jackpot.💰💰

It's finally here! Several months ago, we set out to create a beer that would encapsulate the best aspects of a killer summer beer...light, dry and crisp but also with a ton of flavor. So Brandon reached out to Dave Olsen at Ursula and the ideas started flowing. This is a seriously delicious beer and we couldn't be happier with the end result. We can't wait for you to try it! Click the link in the bio to read more about the process . In addition to working with Ursula, the intention of this brew was to support an organization that we love around here, Running Rivers, whose mission is to facilitate the connection of people with healthy freshwater ecosystems through recreational events, education and on-the-ground projects. So we're happy to say that 10% of all sales from both Joy and Ursula will go to Running Rivers to help support conservation efforts for our wonderful state fish, the Greenback Cutthroat.

More from our FAQ section on the westernativetroutchallenge.org : ——Why are Montana’s species for this Challenge only catchable in stocked lakes or reservoirs? —- As of 2019, the state of Montana has very specific regulations that govern fishing “contests”. We have to apply for a permit each year. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks has chosen to include only two of the state’s native trout species in this Challenge and, for now, they can only be caught in bodies of water indicated on the Challenge fish map.  We will update this information if it changes in the future. Currently you can catch Yellowstone Cutthroat like this one caught by @bryan_gio and Westslope Cutthroat in Montana as part of our Western Native Trout Challenge. #yellowstonecutthroat
