Photo by @amivitale Three young West African giraffe graze outside of Doulouwal Peulh, Niger - a village about 50 miles outside of the capital of Niamey where people live side by side with the endangered West African giraffe in the country's government-defined Giraffe Zone. Female giraffes give birth standing up and newborns are welcomed to the world with an almost five foot drop to the ground! However, within 30 minutes they are standing, and only hours later they are able to run with their mothers. At one point, the range of West African giraffe stretched across the Sahel, from Nigeria to Senegal. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss all contributed to the population's decline, and by the mid-90's, only 49 remained, in this zone. Today, while still highly threatened, thanks to heroic conservation efforts, they number 600. In December, in order to help the longterm survival prospects of this subspecies, the Nigerien government with help from a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation ( @giraffe_conservation ) and Sahara Conservation Fund worked together to translocate eight giraffe from the Giraffe Zone to the Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve. The translocation was a success and all are doing wonderfully. Photo by @amivitale West African giraffe browse in the early morning hours in Niger's Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where humans and giraffe coexist. Only 600 of the highly endangered West African giraffe exist in the world, so the government of Niger launched an ambitious plan to create a satellite population of the highly endangered species. With the help of Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Sahara Conservation Fund, eight animals were translocated Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve where they had been absent for 50 years. It was the first conservation effort of its kind for the West African subspecies. Photo by @amivitale Tomorrow, Feb. 27 in Prague, my exhibit Hope x Extinction opens at @czechphotocz at 6pm. I'll be giving an artist's talk and two VR films will be on display. The show kicks off the new Czech Photo Nature competition for Czech and Slovak photographers. Learn more and make plans to join me at czechphoto.org. The show runs until April 7. Here, an orphaned baby reticulated giraffe embraces @sararacamp wildlife keeper Lekupania. This giraffe will be rehabilitated and return to the wild, as a number of others have done before him. Right now, giraffe are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. The decline is thought to be caused by to habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but because there haven't been long term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly what it happening. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to better understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. Follow @doconnor16 @giraffe_conservation @sdzsafaripark to learn more. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. Photo by @amivitale | A reticulated giraffe towers above the shrubbery at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. One of the theories put forward as to why giraffe have such long necks is that it gives them an advantage in securing nutrients. They can reach leaves that no other animals can. Others posit that the long necks are a result of sexual selection since male giraffes battle with their necks to win mates. Most recently, scientists have hypothesized that the long necks are to help fight the African heat. The greater surface area allows more heat can escape. Whichever it may be, these fascinating creatures are in trouble. Their numbers have fallen 30 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to about 110,000 today. Photo by @amivitale | On International Women's Day, I want to share the story of one of the inspiring women I have met. Ruth Lekgpanai is the first woman in Africa who is a "giraffe guard" for the “Twiga Walinzi,” a brilliant team that works as field researchers and protectors of endangered reticulated giraffe in northern Kenya. Right now, giraffe are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. She and her team are on the front lines of protecting this beautiful animal, gathering more information on giraffe populations and developing a photo identification database to track individual giraffes. They manage a network of 120 camera traps and conduct snare removal patrols. Ruth is one of many women worldwide who are protecting, researching and caring for the world's most vulnerable species. @nrt_kenya @sdzsafaripark @doconnor16 @giraffe_conservation @r.e.s.c.u.e @sararacamp @kenyawildlifeservice @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeoimagecollection #protectgiraffes #DontLetThemDisappear #giraffe #giraffes #savegiraffes #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #nikon #d4s #nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #natureisspeaking #conservation #amivitale

A Természetvédelmi Világszövetség (IUCN ) adatai alapján a zsiráfok száma 1985-ben 155 000 volt, 2015-ben már viszont csupán csak 97 000.Erről viszont senki sem beszél. Ideje felhívni a figyelmet! Egyedül nem élik túl!

Roaming the Sub-Saharan habitats, giraffes are being illegally poached for their valuable tails, flesh and spotted coats. In the last 30 years, the giraffe population has plummeted nearly 40%, leaving just over 68,000 adults left. Deforestation has stripped the landscape bare and uninhabitable for many forms of life, threatening entire ecosystems. Agriculture expansion has also forced giraffes, and all other flocks of life, into smaller more fragmented habitats. Giraffes need your help now. 🦒 Project Peril is committed to keeping these beautiful creatures alive so that they can be appreciated for generations to come! 💛 . . . . #giraffes #giraffesofinstagram #safegiraffes #protectgiraffes #endangeredgiraffes #endangeredspecies #iucnredlist #protectgiraffehabitat #conserveecosystems #subsahara #conserveourwildlife #greatergoodorg #projectperil #therewhenitmatters #saveendangeredanimals #preventbiodoversityloss #giraffephotography #conservationawareness #biodiversityconservation #africanhabitat #subsaharanafrica #subsaharanwildlife #extinctionisforever #endillegalpoaching #deforestationawareness #fragmentedhabitat #giraffesarebeautiful

How is YOUR Sunday going?🦒 📸 @amivitale West African giraffe browse in the Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where giraffes and humans co-exist about 50 miles outside of Niger's capital, Niamey. For almost 50 years, the highly threatened West African giraffe has lived only in this region. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss have all contributed to the population's decline. An ambitious plan to create a satellite population of the highly endangered West African giraffe was undertaken by the Nigerien government with help by a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation ( @giraffe_conservation ) and Sahara Conservation Fund. Eight animals were captured and translocated to the Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve. This is the first conservation effort of its kind for the West African subspecies. Photo by @amivitale A West African giraffe calf looks up to its mother inside the Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where giraffes and humans co-exist in Niger. Newborn giraffe measure approximately 6 feet tall and can stand within a half hour of hitting the ground at birth. (Their entry into the world can be more than a 5 foot drop - mothers give birth standing ). Today there are barely 600 West African giraffe in existence so creating a satellite population of the highly endangered giraffe was undertaken by the Nigerien government with help by a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation ( @giraffe_conservation ) and Sahara Conservation Fund. Photo by @amivitale A reticulated giraffe browses at Sarara Camp ( @sararacamp ) in northern Kenya. Because their necks are so long, reticulated giraffes must splay their legs in order to reach the leaves or water sources on the ground. A variety of hypothesis exist for why giraffe necks are so long. Some say it is to reach high food sources, others say the long neck is the result of sexual selection, and still others hypothesize that these long necks allow them to better cool themselves under the hot, African sun. No matter which it is, giraffe are, sadly in trouble. Giraffe populations have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades and reticulated giraffe number fewer than 16,000. The decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but with the lack of long-term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly. Photo by @amivitale Reticulated giraffe browse beside one another on the 850,000-acre Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. It is easy to see why this species is called the reticulated giraffe, with its brown-orange patches clearly defined by a network of thick and striking white lines. Until recently, scientists classified giraffes as one species with multiple subspecies, including the reticulated giraffe. But new research suggests that giraffes should be four species: reticulated, southern giraffe, Maasai giraffe, and northern giraffe. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals and giraffe as a whole are undergoing what is being termed a silent extinction. With just only 111,000 giraffes in the African wild, giraffes have been silently listed as Vulnerable to Extinction on the IUCN Red list of Threatend Species. The population has declined over 30% in less then 30 years alone, and likely 90% in the last century. Can you imagine Africa without giraffes? Can you imagine Africa without Elephants, Rhinos, Lions, Leopards as well as countless other animals that provide such an important role in Africa’s ecosystem? If we don’t stop this madness of poaching, trophy hunting and the degradation of their habitat, our future children will never know what these animals are. In respect to World Giraffe Day, let’s make everyday World Animal Day! We need to stop the madness! All wild animals provide a pivotal role in nature that keeps this planet clean! We are the only animals that has ruined it, we don’t deserve it! There is no Planet B! This giraffe is one of approximately 97,000 remaining in the wild today. #WorldGiraffeDay is a time to celebrate these amazing creatures and raise awareness about the "silent extinction" of the species. Giraffe numbers have dropped by 40 percent over the last 30 years, a fact largely unnoticed by the global community until recently. To help save the world’s tallest mammal, you can spread the word to your family and friends, support organizations working to conserve giraffes and their habitats, and refuse to buy any products made from giraffe skins or bones. Giraffes have upgraded from vulnerable to endangered on the endangered species act... as heart breaking as this is, it does however mean that more action will be taken to protect these beautiful creatures, anyone wishing to import giraffes or their parts will have to meet very difficult requirements, potentially halting such barabaric trade all together... there is no planet B. Let’s look after the one we have. #giraffes #giraffesofinstagram #endangeredgiraffes #spacegiraffe #savetheplanet #protectgiraffes #endangeredspecies #endangeredspecies #prayforgiraffes #doodle #giraffedrawing #noplanetb #planetearth #thereisnoplanetb
