This streaked fig sphinx (Protambulyx strigilis ) landed on the lip of this ghost orchid bloom last summer, probed it’s proboscis (tongue ) deep into the nectar spur, bringing its head down into the throat of the flower when the pollen is held and then did a back dive off. Total time in contact with the bloom was just under one second. Once the moth landed and broke the laser beam of the trigger, the camera fired a burst at a rate of 8 frames per second. Notice the flower bounce in the 9th frame. I am thankful that after three years trying my camera trap was able to capture this fleeting moment. The probing and potential pollination is even faster than I expected. The first frame of the sequence is now online in the August Issue of National Geographic Magazine with a story by @Doug las_main describing discoveries I made with @macstonephoto @peter_houlihan , Mark Danaher and colleagues (link in my bio ). Be sure to watch the new short film Chasing Ghosts by @bio_graphic @grizzlycreekfilms @bendicci and @jeffreedfilm #chasingghosts #hititandquitit #pollination #pathofthepanther #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild

Photo by Carlton Ward Jr. @carltonward | A Florida panther patrols his territory in the cypress swamps and pine woods of southwest Florida. He walks through this camera trap at Babcock Ranch about once a month, facing the camera only half the time and mostly at night. Once or twice a year I get to see him like this, with some daylight adding depth to the scene (those are water drops on the lens port ). I’ve known this panther, through my camera traps, for nearly three years. I’ve seen him heal from battle scars, recover from a limp, and persistently court the first female panther documented north of the Caloosahatchee River since 1973. I also have seen kittens that were probably his. I’ve never seen a panther in this part of Florida with my own eyes. Only through tracks and photos do I get a glimpse into its secretive life. Knowing this dominant male panther is patrolling and defending his territory gives me hope that we can use his story to defend the larger territory of his species from the expanded roads and development that currently target Florida’s last wild places. Rancher Cary Lightsey told me: “The panther is going to have to help us save Florida.” I believe his words; the panther can help inspire a movement to achieve balance for wild Florida and ourselves. I’m going to keep photographing and filming panthers—and the land they represent. And we’re going to use the story to promote new conservation policies that empower landowners seeking alternatives to development. Please stay connected with me in the coming months and check out the links in my bio. #FloridaWildlifeCorridor #pathofthepanther #floridawild #KeepFLWild #panther @fl_wildcorridor @insidenatgeo

From @natgeo Photos by Carlton Ward Jr. @carltonward | I was hanging from a pine tree on a cattle ranch in Highlands County photographing a young Florida black bear in a clearing below, when it suddenly stood up on its back legs, looked around, and then scrambled high into another pine. Then I saw a much bigger male bear was coming down the trail. The young bear stayed draped over the lowest branch, still higher than my tree stand, and patiently waited for the the big bear to move on. Then the little bear slid down the tree and scurried away. Four years before, I was hanging in another pine on an adjacent ranch when my friends were hosting a "bear workshop" at nearby Archbold Biological Station. This was when we first officially proposed the Florida Wildlife Corridor project, based on bear science and the Florida Ecological Greenways Network. The black bears living on the nearby ranches, and their wide landscape movements illuminated by my friends’ research, showed us how we could save wild Florida. Now more than ever, we need to accelerate the pace of conservation to save the statewide Florida Wildlife Corridor for bears, other wildlife and ourselves. Visit @carltonward to see me in my tree stand and a photo the little bear and big bear in the same frame. @fl_wildcorridor @archboldstation #Bear #FloridaWildlifeCorridor #PathofthePanther #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild @ilcp_photographers @natgeoimagecollection #beard #beards #bear

“Ghosts of the Everglades: Clinging to survival in shrinking swamps, ghost orchids are so elusive that their pollinators have remained unknown—until now. One team’s findings may help to save both the flower and its threatened home.” @stbedard with @biographic_magazine Could not be more excited by the groundbreaking findings of @carltonward , @macstonephoto and @peter_houlihan , who have spent the past three summers painstakingly working to solve the great mystery of the Florida swamp; who pollinates the ghost orchid? This is a story of adventure, mystery, scientific discovery, and one of the most phenomenal stories of adaptation in all of #wildflorida Fall in love with the swamp all over again with the short film, “Chasing Ghosts”, the story of Floridas’ ethereal ghost orchids and the elusive moths that pollinate them. I’ll be sharing photos over the next few days of my mini-ghost hunt in the Fakahatchee last summer with @leyoho and @carltonward Stay tuned! 👻🌿 #chasingghosts #keepflwild

Chasing Ghosts [5 of 9] > Ghost orchid blooms. Ephemeral white flowers that sometimes emerge during the summer from rare leafless ghost orchids hanging from trees above water in the deepest corners of South Florida swamps. These flowers, and the magical places where they live, have been the focus of my obsession for the past three years. @macstonephoto @peter_houlihan and I joined forces last summer in our converging quests to try to solve one of the greatest mysteries of the Evergaldes — what pollinates the ghost orchid? Look at the bloom on the left and take note of the long the tubelike structure dangling down and right from the back of the flower. This is the nectar spur. It contains the sweet liquid that lures a moth to bury its head into the flower cup and reach its tongue called a proboscis as deep as possible into the spur to reach the most nectar. The ghost orchid nectar spur is long, suggesting that the the moth species that pollinates it would have a proboscis that is equally long. The giant sphinx moth has the longest proboscis is all South Florida moths leading to the widely held theory that it is the sole pollinator of the ghost orchid. But there is no visual evidence to validate this claim. Using camera traps and lots of patience, we set out to try and capture the first-ever photographs of pollination. What species of creatures are we to keep coming back to these orchids summer after summer? This is a question for another time and place. Whether a rare or common species, I know I’m not alone in being enchanted and possibly controlled by these mesmerizing flowers that embody so much history, controversy, mystique and undeniable splendor of Florida at its wildest heart. Please continue to follow this journey as it unfolds in the coming days. #chasingghosts #pathofthepanther @fl_wildcorridor @insidenatgeo @natgeoimagecollection @ilcp_photographers #floridawild #KeepFLWild #ghostorchid

#Repost @carltonward with @kimcy929_repost • • • • • • This week I had the privilege of photographing Sassy, an almost 4-year old Florida panther who lives at the Palm Beach Zoo. Her mother was killed by a car near Naples in 2014 and Sassy was the only of three kittens to survive. Biologists from @myfwc took her to @naples_zoo for immediate care in their animal hospital and she was later moved to the @palmbeachzoo for her permanent home where hundreds of thousands of visitors have a chance to see her each year. In addition to caring for injured and abandoned panthers, and giving homes to panthers that can’t be released to the wild, zoos serve an important role in educating the public about panthers and their conservation needs. Just a few minutes looking at this beautiful creature and anyone is going to fall in love. I’ve been chasing panthers in the wild with camera traps for 3 years and have seen two panthers in the wild with my own eyes. So I was mesmerized by the opportunity to observe Sassy in her large enclosure. Her grace, power and stealth was awe inspiring. At one point she jumped 10 feet down from a tree and landed on the ground right in front of me under full control without making a sound! Go see her yourself! Here a few photos from by visit with Sassy, all shot through the steel mesh of her habitat. Which is your favorite? Thanks @sonyalpha for loaning me a 400 2.8 lens that allowed me to produce wonderfully sharp photos with the foreground and background out of focus, and all handheld because the lens is so lightweight. Thanks to the @panthers_florida foundation, Fox Sports Miami and Zoo President Margo McKnight for working with me to share the #pathofthepanther story! #morethanamascot #PantherPortrait #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild

Putting out a trail camera and picking the right spot can be quite a thrill. But you have to keep your eyes 👀 open for signs and use that to your advantage. I previously caught a bear 🐻 using this tree so I dialed another camera in closer to capture this footage . I have since moved the camera just a little more upwards angle, to capture a head shot as this black bear is quite tall - taller then me. And that moth photo-bombed me!!! . . . . . . . . #animalvideo #wildlife #trailcam #wildlifephotography #browningtrailcameras #owl #bear #panther #videos #naturephotography #nature #naturevideo #naturevideos #trailcam #floridawildlifefederation #trailcamprovideocontest #trailcampro #myfwc #fwcresearch #fl_wildcorridor #keepflwild #pathofthepanther #blackbear #bear #bearnecessities #wildandwilder #floridaexplored #animalvideo

Panthers have a place on this planet. In fact, the average territory of a single male panther is 200 square miles. When we protect the undeveloped land on which they wander, we also conserve quality soil, water and air for which all species use – including humans. Thus, learning the importance of #LivingWithPanthers is not only essential to their survival, but is beneficial to the entire Florida ecosystem. Learn more about how to protect the Florida panther and how you can support the work we do for them at the link in our bio. Florida loses more than 100,000 acres of natural and rural land to development each year. 🌳🌳🌳🌳——>🏗🚜🏠🏢 We were given a garden—- And gave back a parking lot! Based on the time of the year, I knew the kites were probably nesting in other trees nearby. Next year when they come back from their annual migration to South America, how many other trees will be gone in the South Florida breeding grounds that are so important to their epic life journey? Panther Weekly! #Repost @fstopfoundation • • • • • The #PathofthePanther has been an arduous journey, which included near-extinction in the 1980s. Thankfully, with the work of many generous people, the Florida panther has rebounded in the last few years. However, they are still an endangered species that needs our help. 6 / 16 / 2019 ————————————————————— Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is not the typical landscape one would expect to find in Northern Florida - especially not so close to a fairly large city such as Gainesville. About 16,000 of the park’s 21,000 acres form a natural depression that has become a large freshwater marsh/grassland. The preserve is home to a vast array of wildlife, including wild horses and buffalo (no kidding )! Paynes Prairie is Florida’s first state preserve and is now a National Natural Landmark. If you ever are traveling through Gainesville, visiting this state park is a great way to experience wild Florida. As beautiful and valuable as Paynes Prairie is in itself, imagine if it was fully connected to the rest of Florida! With careful planning and consistent effort, Florida’s remaining wildernesses can indeed coexist alongside cities and human development.

You to the rescue! If we can save the panther, we can save them all. The Florida panther is an umbrella species, which means its preservation trickles down the food chain. As a result, any efforts to protect the Florida panther ensures there are enough grasslands, trees and wetlands for other species to survive, as well. #Repost @carltonward ・・・One of my favorite things about using camera traps is seeing the diversity of wildlife that use the same trails in the forest. While my aim for this location was photos of the endangered Florida panther, I also captured some nice images of its smaller cousin — the bobcat. Shot #onassignment for @nature_org and for my #PathofthePanther project with @fl_wildcorridor and @insidenatgeo A male Florida panther has a home range of up to 200 square miles. Protecting land for one Florida panther also provides habitat for thousands of other species. #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild

#repost @fl_wildcorridor ・・・ COMING THURSDAY...On a narrow path through Florida's Everglades Headwaters, three friends embark on a journey to survey a fragile wilderness corridor before it disappears forever. Amidst a backdrop of massive development and population growth, their expedition documents the vitality and connectedness of an ecosystem in a state of rapid transformation. Mother nature may be resilient - but when the last green thread is stretched to the breaking point, can we summon the courage and resourcefulness to change course? #TheLastGreenThread

“I just finished a short and crazy assignment for @NatGeo that allowed me to visit some of my favorite places in wild Florida. Some spots were nice changes of scenery from the swamps that have been my nearly exclusive focus for the past three years in my #PathofthePanther project with @insidenatgeo ” (via @ carltonward ) - #ambitist #offthegrid #deep #nature #ocean #diving #jellyfish #conservation #natgeo #natgeowild

Women in Action, 18x24 oilpainting. Prescribed fire at the Nature Conservancy’s Disney Wilderness Preserve, Everglade’s headwaters by a female firefighter. In a filed that is predominantly male oriented, “14 women from eight different agencies came together from all over Florida to highlight the leadership of women in fire and the importance of fire in maintaining native landscape.” From the moment I looked at this image on national geographic Instagram, I knew this would be my next painting.it conveyed such a strong massage, it was hard to resist. Previously watching the movie”Only the Brave’, I already knew how dangerous and yet critical the role of prescribed fire in health of forest is. But to have women being represented in such important task, makes this painting far more important to me meaning than just another landscape painting. Special thanks to talented Carlton Ward @carltonward for giving me the permission to use the photograph as my source image. #pathofthepanther #insideNatGeo #natureflorida #fire #floridawild #keepFLWild #granitemountainhotshots #breakingbarriers #defyingstereotypes #oilpainting #landscapepainting #paintingoftheday #natgeo @carltonward #canadianartist #painting #womenempowerment #art #artgallery #originalart
