Both new calves have been named! Say hello to L124 “Whistle” and J56 “Tofino”! - L124 “Whistle” was named for the whistling vocalizations the Southern Residents use. Whether there is a special purpose for the whistling sounds is not known. However, whistles are used during social interactions and in short-range communication. - Whistle was born in December 2018 and was first seen during a livestream of TV stations in Seattle. They aired live aerial footage of several groups of killer whales in Puget Sound and viewers were able to see a very small calf among them. During this livestream it became clear that the calf’s mother was L77 “Matia” (b. 1987 )! - J56 “Tofino” was named after the place she was first seen. On May 30, 2019, whale watchers encountered J Pod near Tofino and noticed a very tiny new calf with them! The calf still had fetal folds on its side and the Center for Whale Research estimated that she was born just a few days earlier on May 24th. - On July 5th, the Center for Whale Research had their first encounter with the new calf and were able to confirm that the mother was J31 “Tsuchi” (b. 1995 )! They were also able to get a clear view of her genital markings and announced that Tofino is a female! - J56 has also been given a First Nations name, N̓ačiqs (Na-chi-cks ) which means Tofino. - Now that both calves have received names they are available for adoption via the Whale Museum! - Photo of L124 “Whistle” by @brendonbissonnette Photo of J56 “Tofino” by Dave Ellifrit

I make it a point to do some research on whatever I’m drawing—so tonight I learned that kelp forests encourage a greater variety of plant and animal life than almost any other oceanic habitat. But the most interesting thing I discovered is that the bulb-like part along the stem is called an air bladder, and it acts like a balloon to help the leaves rise up towards the water’s surface so they can get sunlight, which it needs to make its food. Passing by so much kelp along the coast, I’ve always wondered what that was all about. Can’t wait to see some again, this time with a greater appreciation.

“Oh, How I’ve Missed You...” . . . We ran into some of the Southern Resident killer whales in Canadian waters, specifically a handful of members of L pod. Because of a Canadian moratorium on watching these critically endangered whales, we were unable to stay with them. I managed to snap this picture of L91 (Muncher ), a female born in 1995 like me, as we passed by them. This was my first time seeing these whales all summer long. Once iconic Salish Sea regulars, their presence here is now far and few between as they struggle to find adequate prey to sustain themselves. These specialized fish hunters evolved to prefer chinook salmon, the largest and most calorie-rich salmon. Unfortunately, due to overfishing, pollution, hydroelectric dams, and habitat destruction, all five species of Pacific salmon are in severe decline, especially chinook salmon, resulting in a corresponding decline in this population of orcas I’ve known my whole life. Year by year I watch them die off one by one, starving to death and never returning with their families. My heart aches for her and her whole family as we continue to neglect our world’s ecosystems. I hope wherever they’ve been all summer they’ve been finding fat, healthy salmon to eat. Stay strong, kiddos. I love you all, and will keep fighting for you for as long as I have to. . . . #orca #killerwhale #southernresidentorcas #southernresidentkillerwhales #marinemammal #marinebio #cetacean #lpod #l91 #salishsea #nofishnoblackfish #sos #saveoursalmon #salmon #conservation #endangered #pnw #pacificnorthwest #washington

It’s not a coincidence that @longlive kings 🐟⁣ Long Live the King’s Salmon homecoming event this weekend coincided directly with the return of all 3 #SRKW pods to inland waters of the Salish Sea. 🐟🐟🐟 ⁣ ⁣ There are no native salmon runs on Orcas Island, so there’s less of a risk of hatchery fish intermingling with wild fish. One of the goals of this hatchery is to increase Chinook abundance for the endangered 73 Southern Resident Orcas.🐬🐬🐬⁣ ⁣ These aren’t the only fish returning to the Salish Sea currently, fall salmon runs have been stronger in the area. It’s the declining spring and summer runs that have led to the uncharacteristic seasonal absences of the Southern Resident Orcas.⁣ ⁣ We hope Js, Ks, and Ls will find a reason to stick around for a while! We hope they are finding an abundance of big, healthy salmon! ⁣ ⁣ Informative words by: ⁣ @orcawatcher ⁣ ⁣ Photograph: @NOAA ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #srkw#orca#nofishnoblackfish#weprotectwhatwelove#racingextinction#extinctionrebellionSalishsea ⁣ ⁣

As my shop name says, my pins are for a purpose (and sometimes for porpoises! ) I purposefully decided on the phrase “free the snake” because it’s not self explanatory to those unaware of the issue. I want this pin to help you strike up conversation with those who ask you about it! Help others learn and be the voice for the orcas. Spread awareness. Whenever I’m feeling down about things, particularly the current outlook of the SRKW population, I have to remember that I can do something. We all can. • Why breach the snake river dams? Keeping it in simplest form: the river dams prevent already dwindling numbers of salmon from spawning up the snake river, one of the main sources of salmon these orcas have. By breaching them, we could throw them a lifeline and allow salmon populations the habitat to recover. Based on past studies, we know salmon can and will recover quickly given the opportunity, but we have to afford them that. • Spread the word. Be their voice. Call your reps. Write your elected officials. #freethesnake

Meet Tofino and Whistle, the new babies of the Southern Residents who have just been named by @thewhalemuseum and who are now up for a symbolic adoption! Tofino was named for the area where she was first seen with J pod and also holds the First Nations name N̓ačiqs, (Na-chi-cks ), which means Tofino. Whistle had many votes and represents the sounds Southern Residents make - they're very chatty guys. Whistles sister is Joy, who was adopted by my godchild in 2014 for her christening, belonging to L pod. If you're interested to adopt, head over to The Whale Museum. Each adoption facilitates research and conservation of the critically endangered southern resident population.🖤💙 📷 The Whale Museum #namethebaby #adopt #orcababy #marinewildlifetourism #southernresidentkillerwhales • • • • • • • • • #orca #orcas #killerwhales #killerwhale #orcawatching #whalewatching #babies #calf #thewhalemuseum #fridayharbor #washington #protectwhatyoulove #cetaceanconservation #dolphins #blackfish #orcagram #whales #gift #coolgift #nofishnoblackfish #hellobc #kelp #orcinusorca #southernresidents #salishsea

Depending on the time of year, members of the Southern Resident orca population can be found anywhere from Monterey Bay, California to southeastern Alaska. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA ) is proposing to expand the endangered population’s critical habitat based upon their coastal range and habitat use. - Healthy habitat is essential to the recovery of the salmon the Southern Resident orcas depend on, thus, habitat protection is crucial to their recovery as well. Currently, the Southern Residents’ critical habitat is limited to inland waters adjacent to the San Juan Islands in Washington State. The additional critical habitat would include more than 15,627-square-miles of marine waters from Cape Flattery, Washington, south to Point Sur, California. Genetic analysis of prey and fecal samples obtained from the Southern Residents showed that the whales prey on salmon from as far south as California’s Central Valley and as far north as the Taku River in Alaska. It has become evidentially clear that the whales rely on a diversity of salmon stocks from different rivers up and down the West Coast. NOAA is seeking public comments on the proposal: https://go.usa.gov/xVmDe - While extending critical habitat is important, removing the four Lower Snake River dams is the single most effective way to restore salmon populations and ensure the survival of the Southern Resident orca population. Call Governor Inslee at (360 )902-4111 and demand that the four lower Snake River Dams are breached immediately, and for the whales’ sake, cut salmon out of your diet. For every day the dams remain, the Southern Residents are pushed closer to extinction. - In other news, the two newest members of the Southern Resident orca population, J56 and L124, have officially been named by the Whale Museum and are available for adoption. J56 was named Tofino after the area she was first seen, just off the outer coast of Vancouver Island. L124 received the name Whistle after the unique whistling sounds the Southern Residents often use. - Caption: @cetacean inspiration Photo: J27 “Blackberry” by @gary_j27

Reposted from @jordangatto We painfully never seem to learn . "Killer Whales were seen not just as vermin species but potentially dangerous... In 1961, Fisheries and Oceans Canada mounted a .50 caliber machine gun north of Campbell River just to shoot Orcas that were competing with humans for fish. It was never fired, but that didn't stop local fishermen from shooting them out of anger and for fun" - Jason Colby (Historian/Author ) . "In the 1950s, the US Military launched an air strike on nearly 100 Killer Whales off the coast of Iceland - slaughtering them with rockets and gunfire - after fishermen complained they were eating too many herring" - Jon Hernandez (CBC News ) . "In British Columbia, non-First Nation fishermen once considered killer whales to be nuisances and competition for salmon. About 1 in 4 killer whales that were captured in the 1960s and 1970s showed evidence of having been previously shot and wounded" - United States Environmental Protection Agency The exact same conflict and lack of awareness that took place 50 years ago between humans and Orcas is still present today with humans and Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions ). The collapse of the herring and salmon fisheries is a result of humans exploiting natural resources and years of abuse to the environment. If every single pinniped was killed, the main causes of the declining fisheries would still he present and be preventing any sort of herring or salmon population recovery. Open net fish farms need to be removed, salmon spawning river watersheds need to be protected, and the commercial fishing of both #Herring and #Salmon needs to be stopped until fish stocks are back to sustainable levels! We can't keep killing everything we see as competition for a resource and we need to stop pretending nature needs us to keep intervening for it to be healthy #SeaLion #Seal #Pinniped #Conservation #StellerSeaLion #WildSalmon #SalishSea #NoFishNoBlackfish #ResidentOrca #SRKW #GetFishFarmsOut #WeProtectWhatWeLove #TurningTheTide #Coexist #WeAreTheOrca #NoPinnipedCull #BiggsAreTheBalance #SalmonAreLife #KeystoneSpecies #SalmonLove #SayNoToSealCulling #StopTheCull #WildFirst #TheFishThatFeedsTheCoast #BC #PNW

Autumn leaves bunched up among tree roots providing shelter for salmon fry in a mountain river. It was nice snorkeling in such clear water and its always great seeing fish. I was able to see some coho fry this time. Only a few years ago I was able to find chinook salmon here as well. This year I havent seen any chinook fry. As the numbers of wild Pacific Salmon continue to drop seeing these fish will eventually come to an end too. When we all work to recover the endangered Southern Resident killer whales, we are also working to help all other animals in the Salish Sea like transient killer whales, pinnipeds, birds, fish and more. All marine life needs clean water, food and habitat. So when you think about it by protecting the orcas we are protecting life. Leave us a comment below to tell us the ways in which you are helping protecting marine life and the environment. #BeTheirVoice #ExtinctionIsForever #EndangeredMeansTheresStillTime —— —— —— —— 📸: Joshua Woods @pnw_woods / T77B / May 2019
