People living below the “faunal poverty line” are the poor of Africa who bear the brunt of human/wildlife conflict. They lack adequate sanitation, running water, and electricity while facing hunger at the same time. Conflict with wildlife is inevitable when people are forced to live in such conditions. #humanwildlifeconflict

Hi everyone! I’ve never done an “intro” post, so here it goes! . My name is Korinna Domingo and I am a Los Angeles native. I am a Gryffindor and went to a school that is almost as dreamy as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. ✨🔮🧙 . . I received my B.Sc. in Wildlife Management & Conservation from Humboldt State University ( @humboldtstate ) in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout the years I have worked on a variety of wildlife projects that include species such as black bears, mountain lions, porcupines, river otters, and elk. In the summer of 2018, I worked with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife ( @californiadfw ) on the coastal Roosevelt elk project - capturing, tagging, and monitoring newborn calves. 🦌 As Mountain Lion Foundation’s ( @mountainlionfoundation ) Conservation Specialist, I mitigate human-wildlife conflicts throughout the state of California, partnering with state and federal agencies to reduce the number of mountain lions killed on depredation permits. 🦁🐐🐈🐶 Currently, I am leading the foundation’s mountain lion human dimensions survey in Southern California. I am extremely passionate about science communication, and am a frequent speaker at community events and professional conferences. Ask me about status, policy, or management of mountain lions ANYTIME! My most recent project was with the Integral Ecology Research Center, where I looked at wildlife visitation at illegal marijuana grow sites on public lands in California before and after reclamation. 🌱☢⚠ ☣ While at community college, I launched my own undergraduate research in the Verdugo Mountains studying urban carnivores in order to inform city officials of wildlife activity in recreation areas through noninvasive and inexpensive trail camera methodologies. 📷 I am also a published photographer, filmmaker, and do various consulting work, such as scientific advising for media and television, location scouting, and content development. . Most importantly, I LOVE WILDLIFE and my all time favorite movie is The Lion King. In my spare time I enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, camping, watching good films, spending time with family, and singing to my cats Oliver and Fiona.

I love this 💕🙏🏻🐘 Repost from @dswtfosterparents using @RepostRegramApp - We will be reposting from one of our favorite galleries all this week #instagramtakeover 📷❤🐘 @elephant_stories_with_fiona - Meet #Larro This is the latest rescued baby elephant at #Sheldrickwildlifetrust @sheldricktrust at their #nairobinursery Larro was rescued from the Masai Mara approx 4 months ago. She was approx 10 months old when rescued. She was found alone and is thought to be a victim of human wildlife conflict. Human Wildlife conflict is another threat which Africa’s precious wildlife is facing more and more as populations and communities grow and encroach on the land. We simply have to find a solution and a way to share our planet with plants and animals, birds and bees........we have the intelligence to understand the consequences yet we seem to do nothing about it. The result is the encroachment of vital wildlife corridors by building communities and expanding farm land to replace the paths which enable elephants to transect the land. How do we live harmoniously and balance humans and wildlife without the conflict? Sweet Larrro. She has a home and family now. Working on a coyote #ethogram today. (An ethogram is a catalogue of distinct behaviors of a certain species. ) I need to collect more video footage and photos of coyotes to get a comprehensive ethogram, but once that is done, I will be posting it on my website (in profile description ). This is important, as many people are unable to, or simply don't care to, differentiate between an aggressive coyote and a coyote whose just minding his/her own business. This is a step in educating the public on how to coexist with the species, and to reduce instances of reports on incidents/conflicts which were never incidents or conflicts to begin with. #ecology #coyotes #biology #ethology #behavioralecology #researchlife #mastersdegree #socal #mammals #coexistence #wildliferesearch #humanwildlifeconflict #americansocietyofmammalogists #asm #bushnell #trailcam #trailcamera #cameratrap #predators #predatorcontrol #cognitiveecology #animalcognition #urbanecology #urbanwildlife #urbancoyotes

We’re back! And what an adventure it’s been. I still have a lot to process after such a life changing experience. For me the highlight was visiting a local school and spending time with these amazing children. Despite huge adversity and poverty, these children where positive, welcoming and generous. I wish I had the resources to support each of their dreams and help them achieve their full potential, but I don’t. I know that I’m living a wonderful life, a life I need to appreciate more than I have in the past. I also know that I’m going to work even harder to help these amazing children in the future. Zambia is a magical place with a people that will always remain in my heart. #onezambiaonenation

I recently heard someone say "If you see a deer without her fawn, usually the coyote's the reason." This is simply untrue. Coyotes have a very wide range in size and social behavior - not all coyotes live in packs, and most, especially on the West, are far too small to take down a healthy fawn on its own. Coyotes are opportunists, and omnivores. Their diet consists of fruits & other vegetation, insects, rodents, rabbits and, if they do consume large prey, more often than not it is carrion (a carcass ). You will so much more often find a coyote chowing down on a brush rabbit than a deer or calf. This is not to say that they do not hunt large prey, but that it is not accurate to say that coyotes are the primary reason for fawn mortality. Especially when competing with hyper-carnivorous predators such as mountain lions and bobcats! #ecology #coyotes #biology #ethology #behavioralecology #researchlife #mastersdegree #socal #mammals #coexistence #wildliferesearch #humanwildlifeconflict #americansocietyofmammalogists #asm #bushnell #trailcam #trailcamera #cameratrap #predators #predatorcontrol #cognitiveecology #animalcognition #urbanecology #urbanwildlife

🇰🇪Nairobi, Kenya Seriously, is there anything cuter than baby elephants 😍🐘? This photo was taken at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya. This is an amazing rescue centre that saves baby elephants and rhinos who have been orphaned as a result of human-wildlife conflict, climate change, or natural causes. Visitors get to see the baby elephants as they play and are fed (adorable ). More importantly, you can also adopt an orphan, which not only means you’ll get monthly updates and exclusive visit times, but also ensures that these amazing beings have access to the food, healthcare, shelter and social interaction they need to eventually be reintegrated back into the wild. It’s truly an amazing organization all around! Worth a visit if you’re in Nairobi, and worth adopting even if you can’t visit in person! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #nairobi #kenya #davidsheldrickwildlifetrust #babyelephants #elephants #visitkenya #explorekenya #exploreafrica #wildlifeconservation #conservationphotography #conservationtourism #savetheelephants #ethicaltravel #bekindtotheearth #humanwildlifeconflict #wildlifephotography #babyanimalspictures

Tigers are beautiful yet vulnerable, I have observed tigers and their behaviour towards humans and I have also observed how humans interact with tigers. My recent visit to Tadoba National Park made me realise that we got too close to the wildlife disturbing their personal space and which can create perilous situation. No doubt why human wildlife conflicts are increasing and one of the reason is this, where humans interfere in their personal space. Our jeeps were too close and any reaction from the tiger would have resulted into something really bad. National parks first concern should be safety of both the tourists and also the wild animals and act accordingly. People reading this out, please make sure you keep a distance between these wild animals because it for your safety and as well as theirs. So remember, its not just humans that live on this planet and have respect towards the wildlife. #conserve #conservation #space #tiger #tigress #tigersofindia #savetigers #savewildlife #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotographer #wildlifephotography #natgeo #sanctuary #bbc #bbcearth #bbcwildlife #natgeoindia #tadoba #maharashtra #nikon #nikonindia #india #nature #humanwildlifeconflict #wwf #chinmaypuranikphotography

Here at AfriCat, over the past 2 decades, the ‘Rescue and Release Programme’ developed as a result of our relationship with the farming community. The AfriCat ‘Carnivore Care Centre’, in turn, was a by-product of the ‘Rescue and Release Programme’. . AfriCat HQ, provides a home, food and care for a small number of carnivores that currently cannot be released into the wild. . They were captured without their mothers, due to human wildlife conflict and farmers who saw them as a threat to their live-stock. . Others have been in captivity elsewhere for extended periods of time or have been confiscated by the authorities for being held illegally or with improper care, making them unsuitable for release. . Their hunting skills however are instinctive, but due to captivity, they become habituated and therefore cannot be released back onto farmland. . These individuals are going to live out their lives under the expert care of the AfriCat team. These animals will take over the role of being ‘Species Ambassadors’ for their wild counterparts. . You can support us by sponsoring one of our captive or wild carnivores. . . . #AfriCat #Namibia 📷: Anja Denker Wildlife Photography

Transfrontier Conservation Areas identify migratory wildlife corridors between large parks and reserves, securing wild habitats and elevate conservation of all wildlife. However, these unfenced corridors go through villages, and the people of Zambia have to cope with rising elephant numbers coming out of the parks as natural resources get overused, affected by climate change, and seasonal fluxes. Putting up elephant proof fences is not an option, and the removal of villages is also controversial. It comes down to a balance of managing wildlife population numbers, respecting traditional ways of life, and understanding the complexity of the human-wildlife conflict in foreign lands. Hunting, when managed scientifically, can be an excellent conservation tool when used in conjunction with other regulation and oversight.

Recently the College hosted a pilot Environmental Conflict Management M.Sc. course, which incorporated a wide range of discussion topics, from wildlife crime, to translocation of people and crocodile-human conflict. In addition topics such as governance and the value of wildlife were addressed. A range of speakers (including those from the College, from Norway, from the local community committee, from SANParks and other organisations ), served to present a well-rounded view of environmental conflict management in general. Eric Norton, a volunteer at the College's Applied Learning Unit, took part in the course and since its completion has provided his insights, which included the realization that human-wildlife conflict goes well beyond “inconvenience” but is often often a real threat to people's lives and livelihoods. You can read more about this course, the speakers, and Eric's insights on our website via the link in our bio >News and Media #wildlifecollege #southernafricanwildlifecollege #shortcourses #environmentalmanagement #environmentaleducation #humanwildlifeconflict #conflictmanagement #appliedlearning #learningbydoing #trainingbeyondboundaries

A floresta a noite é incrível. A Amazônia é incrível. Infelizmente seu território tem diminuído consideravelmente com crescentes taxas de desmatamento. // During nocturnal sampling in the Amazon, on the banks of the Madeira River, the eyes quickly become accustomed to darkness. Scopri come i tuoi contributi alimentano queste importanti iniziative: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/projects/saving-habitats SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST Elephants face a myriad of threats: poaching, human-wildlife conflict, drought and more. New research, however, has highlighted that habitat loss - especially the conversion of habitats into human-dominated landscapes - is the greatest threat to Southern Kenya’s elephants. Luggard like you have never seen.....now we know! Maybe this also shows some of his determination...maybe...... There were many concerns and heartfelt messages expressed following my recent post highlighting poaching and Luggard, who is a victim of ivory poaching. I hope this shows him in his moment, as a mischievous little baby elephant.....thank you for all your messages, they are always well received. We 💙 Luggard. #Tarangire National Park, Tanzania: A mature bull #elephant schools a younger bull who was a little cocky for his own good. The older bull pushed the younger around until he was completely humbled and resumed his place in the herd of males. One of the neglected issues of the #ivory poaching crisis is that so many of the mature bulls are killed and there are very few to socialize young elephants into behavior patterns that will increase their life span. #humanwildlifeconflict is often the result as inexperienced elephants wander into territory that can get them killed. @natgeo #natgeostudentexpeditions #gettyimages #canonuk #conservation #wildlife #nature

Some red deer walking up a hill at dusk... I had so much fun playing with the silhouettes of the deer. The sky was beautiful that evening! 🌌 . . The Hoge Veluwe National Park is the Netherland's crown jewel when it comes to wildlife. Its landscape was created during the last ice age when a glacier scraped over the floor creating a good topography for healthy forests to grow. Much of the park consists of woodlands home to red deer, roe deer, mouflon and wild boar. Personally, I always travel far to take pictures of wildlife. I overlook the fact that stunning nature occurs right next door. For me this picture is a stark reminder of that. . . #hogeveluwe #netherlands #Nederland #reddeer #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #photography #humanwildlifeconflict #photography #danielnelson #travel #conservation #safari

We welcome new life in the Hobarere Pride! Our leading girl Sidatia has 3 strong and healthy cubs! She has been hidden away in her den for the last few weeks, with no sign from her or her sister Naleli, who also joined her at the same time. . Yesterday morning our team together with Kevin & Mandy set out super early to see if they could catch a glimpse of the mother to be. With major luck on our side, lion guard Scott spotted the little cubs shuffling about as Momi Sid was attempting to move den. . We are so excited for this latest edition & cannot wait to see them grow! . . . #AfriCat #Namibia @kevinrichardsonfoundation #hobaterelodge

We are rembering the beautiful flood of last year! This camera trap video was taken on one of the main elephant corridors behind Ecoexist HQ in the Okavango Panhandle. The same corridor is dry this year. Flood levels in the Okavango Delta Panhandle have been the lowest in living memory and the drought conditions are exacerbating competition for water and other resources, bringing people and elephants closer, more frequently. We have been working hard to ensure villagers avoid frequent encounters and negative interactions at popular watering points along the river by maintaining old water pumps in the villages, reducing the need to compete with elephants for river water on a daily basis. #okavango #elephants #climatechange #humanwildlifeconflict

A very tender moment as a mother Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus ) restrains her foraging calf from grasping the sharp, thorny branches in front of her. Elephant’s trunks are highly delicate tools, containing over 40,000 muscle groups while still able to pick an individual blade of grass! To put this in perspective, the human body has around 700 muscles. This mother seemed keen to safeguard her youngling’s newly formed, slightly clumsy appendage from harm. Matriarchal groups like this one are incredible places to view the interactions that make elephant so special! 🐘🐘🐘🐘

The book this Tigrayan man is holding dates back to the 8th century! It was discovered in a rock-hewn church high up in the cliffs of northern Ethiopia! 🇪🇹 . . Often people assume that historical Western eras like the middle ages or the renaissance stayed strictly within Europe. But in truth, many parts of the world were influenced by Europe's development in the early ages. Christianity was introduced to Ethiopia already in the 4th century. It helped give power to the ancient Aksum Kingdom that became so powerful people called it the Kingdom of Kingdoms. We commonly assume that before colonialism Africa was just hunters and gatherers. Books like this one from Ethiopia are a strong reminder of how rich Africa was before Europe decided to own it. 💪🏽 . . #tigray #ethiopia #rockhewnchurch #bible #Africa #naturephotography #peoplephotography #photography #humanwildlifeconflict #photography #danielnelson #travel #conservation

Jaguars have incredibly strong jaws, its bite exerts more force than a lion! Luckily, this guy was just yawning! 😲🇧🇷 . . When we think of the typical prey of big cats, we think of antelope species or gazelles. But Jaguars are an exception to this. They prey on more than eighty different species of animals including anteaters and armadillos. Their way of killing is different too. Most big cats suffocate their quarry once they have made a kill, often by biting them in the nose or mouth. But jaguars prefer to chomp on their prey's head long enough for them to reach the brain and bite through it. Not very pleasant. If a big cat was ever to take my life, I would not want it to be a jaguar! 😟 . . #jaguar #pantanal #brazil #bigcats #southamerica #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #photography #humanwildlifeconflict #photography #danielnelson #travel #conservation #safari
