EXTINCTION ENDS HERE - On the heals of Canada's announcement that they will oppose the proposed CITES Appendix 2 listing of Mako sharks, the United States has now announced they will be joining Candace in opposition. Despite the fact that the best available science unequivocally demonstrates that Mako shark populations are in serious trouble and in desperate need of protection, the management bodies who are tasked to ensure the health of our oceans, may be bending to the will of fisheries pressure and choosing short-term PROFIT over PROTECTION. How can we ask other nations with far less resources to stand for our oceans, when two of the most affluent nations in the world may choose not too? The United States has historically taken a leadership role at CITES in the conservation threatened and endangered species, and they now have an opportunity to further build on this legacy. #ExtinctionEndsHere when we decide enough is enough and that we will no longer be complicit in global crisis that is driving the loss of keystone species. It is time we join together and take a decisive stand for nature, for our the health of our planet, and for the future of all species on earth. Stay tuned as we move to call on our passionate community to raise their voice in defense of these endangered species. #cites4sharks #bethechange #lightonecandle @sealegacy @bluespherefoundation @lonelywhale @vulcaninc

How do we begin to change the world? I believe in the “power of the people;” in the undeniable tsunami we can create with our combined voices, demanding a living planet. My fellow Earth citizens, today we have an opportunity to influence change through the power of our voices. The @CITES conference is underway right now, and 183 member nations will vote whether or not to protect 18 shark and ray species, including these beautiful mako sharks. In the last few decades, global mako shark populations have plummeted as a result of unregulated fishing. A #CITES Appendix II listing would offer the management and protection they need to survive and recover. Yet Canada and the United States have shamefully announced they will not support this protection. Please join me and ensure your voice is heard, urge policymakers to support mako sharks by signing the #CITES4Sharks petition at the link in my bio! #TurningTheTide with @shawnheinrichs @BlueSphereFoundation @VulcanInc @thewcs @sharkconservationfund @thelifeofrileynz #ExtinctionEndsHere 📸: @ShawnHeinrichs

We are killing over 11,000 sharks every single hour, 100 million each year. When shopping at the grocery store, do you ever take the time to read the ingredients list or who sourced the product? Around the world meat products are often mislabeled to cover up from being various types of sharks, rays, and whales. They can be labeled as: whitefish, rock salmon, cape steak, dog fish, flake, and many more. Many types of shark and ray fall victim to overfishing and are illegally captured, killed, and sold. One might argue that fishing for these types of marine life are “beneficial for the ecosystem”. Because of that mindset many species of ray and shark are endangered. The reality of it is that sharks play a very big role in the ocean and are crucial to its survival. Despite the rules, regulations, and laws that have been passed to decrease the fishing and marketing of sharks and rays, they are still being hunted. Together we can help the movement to end this. Sign @nakaweproject petition to stop selling threatened species and for companies to properly label their meat. https://www.change.org/p/citizens-worldwide-ask-corporations-to-stop-selling-threatened-species-and-label-shark-meat-with-the-species-name #savesharkslives #abreakformakos #sharkmeat #gameoverfishing #cites4sharks #extinctionendshere #voiceforthevoiceless #bansharkfinning

On a day like today, we can't think of a better picture to feature than this one from our friend @shawnheinrichs 😍📷 Mako sharks are the fastest shark in the world but even they can't outswim the impacts of overfishing and are considered critically endangered. But governments around the world can give them a needed lifeline. Right now at @CITES -- an every three years global meeting on international wildlife trade -- world leaders have the opportunity to ensure protection and preservation of the mako shark (and wedgefish, guitarfish and others including elephants ) for generations to come. 📰🔗 Read more about how governments at CITES can help the struggling mako. It is a tough #MakoMonday as the @cites Conference of the Parties considers proposals to add mako sharks to their Appendix II, which adds a layer of oversight and regulation of the trade of these species that have been assessed by independent researchers at the @shark_specialist_group as ENDANGERED. These sharks have a global distribution and are fished throughout their ranges. The US and Canada have decided not to support the Listing Proposal 42. We urge them to reconsider and quickly review the ICCAT report quickly. Internationally caught and traded endangered species just might need an international trade agreement🦈 📸 @mornehardenberg @shark_explorers @sharkadvocatesinternational #maketime4makos #cites4sharks

Mako sharks are the cheetahs of sharks. The shortfin in particular is capable of bursts of over 40 miles per hour. . But longfin and shortfin species are unable to outswim the threat of overfishing. In the last 75 years, both have seen declines of approx. 90% in the Atlantic Ocean. . At the ongoing #CITESCoP18 meeting, they should gain new protections from international trade. #MeetaSharkMonday ⠀ Shortfin Mako Shark ( Isurus oxyrinchus )⠀ Makos are the fastest species of shark, reaching speeds of up to 50 mph. They are highly migratory and a single tagged shark traveled 8,265 miles in just 6 months! They have also been known to leap out of the water. They truly are the ultimate shark athlete.⠀ Despite their speed and agility, mako sharks have not been able to out swim commercial fishing operations. Analyses show that the North Atlantic mako population has a 53% chance of recovering by 2045 ( 5 years later than a study done 2 years ago ) if catches are cut to zero, leaving scientists to recommend a complete and immediate ban on retaining shortfin makos from the region, as well as measures to reduce the mako mortality associated with accidental catches.⠀ ⠀ 📸 @ronwatkinsphotography ⠀ ⠀ #sharkfacts #makosharks #makoshark #savesharks #CITES4Sharks #endangeredspecies #overfishing #maketime4makos #saveourseas #sharkscience #sharkresearch #sharkdiving

Repost from @paulhiltonphoto WE NEED YOUR HELP Show Canada they must vote to protect mako sharks. We need every nation to stand up to protect mako sharks before it’s too late. Add your voice to show Canadian ministers that they must vote for protection. Overfishing has caused a rapid decline in mako shark populations, and today, they are globally endangered. And yet Canada is on the verge of voting against their protection. After showing great leadership by becoming the first G20 country in the world to enact a ban on the trade of shark fins, it is disappointing and saddening to see Canada abandoning sharks when it matters by threatening to vote against their inclusion in CITES appendix II. You can make a difference by demanding that Canada change their position and vote ‘YES’ to add mako sharks to Appendix II of CITES. This addition will ensure any continued trade in mako sharks is both legal and sustainable and will provide the protection that they desperately need. Ok, listen up people. I’m going educate you, so you best sit down and pay attention. The worlds fastest shark is on the verge of extinction. I repeat: THE MAKO SHARK IS ON THE VERGE OF EXTINCTION. It blows my mind that people don’t understand the significance of this situation. Like, wake the fuck up! Can you imagine how heartbreaking it would be to lose this beautiful animal? For good? Humans kill approximately 100 million sharks a year. Can you believe that?! You like your oceans? You like having healthy, flourishing marine ecosystems? Then stop. Killing. Sharks. Sharks are vital to maintaining the balance in the marine food web. Without them, entire ecosystems would collapse! Right now, @cites is voting to place protection over 18 endangered species of sharks and rays, the Mako being among them. Unfortunately, some countries have voted “NO” to this proposal, Canada included. As a Canadian, I can tell you that I am SHOCKED and DISAPPOINTED in my country. This year, Canada made history by becoming the first country in the WORLD to go #finfree It’s sad to believe that we would just stop there. Support the #turningthetide and #cites4sharks by adding your name to the petition. With enough votes, we can change that “NO” to a “YES”, letting other countries know that we can’t give up now! We LOVE sharks and know they should all be protected! 🦈 Please join me in sending an e-mail through the link on @abc4explore account and let everyone know we support protection of Mako sharks and other endangered species! We must stand for those who don’t have a voice! 🙏 PLEASE SHARE! #coicommunity #catfamily #helpmehelpsharks #fisharefriends #protectmakosharks Repost from @abc4explore using @RepostRegramApp - ‼️CALL TO ACTION‼️ USA, Japan & Canada have all now announced their plans to vote NO at @CITES against the protection of MAKO SHARKS & many other endangered species! In light of this refusal to acknowledge the necessity to protect these predators, as well as the blatant disregard of concrete evidence proving makos are heavily laden with highly toxic & poisonous mercury, I guess my only suggestion to these super-power-genius-decision-makers is to “EAT UP & ENJOY MAKO SHARKS” this will ensure your consumption of toxic heavy metals, result in your sterility, and ensure your removal from the human gene pool. If you have a brain, if you have a soul, if you have a heart, please sign the link in my bio http://act.pewtrusts.org/OleHzWq & please ensure these species are listed on Appendix II at CoP18. #CITES4Sharks #abc4explore #makoshark

MAKO SHARKS NEED YOUR HELP! . The news from the front lines in Geneva @cites , starting this weekend, is that the US @usfws have joined Canada in *NOT* supporting the proposal to list Mako sharks in Appendix II CITES... we won’t get into what this means now, but I will in another post, just trust us that it’s important, and time sensitive. All scientific evidence shows mako sharks are highly mobile by nature, have extremely vulnerable life history traits (late maturing, low fecundity ) and were recently listed as globally endangered with populations still declining. Mako shark management is an INTERNATIONAL concern that requires a collective solution - one or two nations fishing sustainably will not recover makos given their continental scale movements. . WHAT CAN YOU DO? Please head to link in @sharksneedlove bio and sign the petition to add mako sharks to Appendix II @cites This will take you less than one minute, and could seriously make a significant difference. . KEEN TO HELP MORE? Email / DM @usfws with your thoughts on their decision to NOT back the mako shark proposal! The oceans fastest predator needs your HELP, so, will you help them? . PLEASE share this post on your feed! . #repost from @cristinamittermeier #SaveLIFE #RespectALLlife #OnePlanet #Earthlings Don't you agree that Manta rays move with such grace through the water, somersaulting as they feed, that there is something almost celestial about them? The Endangered Species Act ( #ESA ) is an essential piece of legislation that protects 1,600 plants and animals, and that has brought animals like the bald eagle back from the edge of extinction in the mainland United States. The Trump Administration recently announced changes to the ESA that will make it easier to remove endangered species from the list and also weakens protections for species listed as #threatened The Giant Manta Ray is one of the fish affected by these changes. They are slow to reproduce, giving birth to just one pup every two to three years, which makes these rays extremely vulnerable to commercial fishing and international trade. Follow @SeaLegacy and join us as we start #TurningTheTide together. Click the link in my bio to sign our current petition to support #CITES4Sharks #ExtinctionEndsHere

#cop18 begins today, where countries vote on what species get international protection and how much officially they are considered threatened. Mako sharks depend on crucial international protection as a species as they are killed as bycatch and intentionally. Please urge Canada to vote ‘YES’ for Makos. Overfishing has caused a rapid decline in shortfin mako shark populations, and today, they are globally endangered. Analyses show that the North Atlantic mako population has a 53% chance of recovering by 2045 ( 5 years later than a study done 2 years ago ) if catches are cut to zero, leaving scientists to recommend a complete and immediate ban on retaining shortfin makos from the region, as well as measures to reduce the mako mortality associated with accidental catches. CITES is a United Nations body of some 183 member nations, whose mission it is to offer threatened species the management and protection they need to recover. Those member nations are voting on whether these shark and ray species deserve to be added to the list, and for the incredible mako shark, it could mean the difference between survival and extinction. A Bottlenose wedgefish (Rhynchobatus australiae ) glides over the sandy bottom with a diver observing it from a far, Malé Atoll, Republic of Maldives. With the recent assessment this year, by the IUCN Shark Specialist Group, all wedgefish species except one are now listed as Critically Endangered, making these group become one of the most threatened marine fishes. . . This year at CITES #CoP18 in Geneva, there will be voting to includes sharks and rays (including Wedgefishes ) for better management and protection in international trades, which is critical for the survival of these funny-looking rays, due to the high value of their fins (which can fetch higher value than most sharks ). . . My friend @nickhawkinsphotography from @sealegacy collective are working on a petition for the Canadian Government to support this voting. Be my good friends, by heading to these sources and sign the petition. And of course, please be a voice for these wedgefishes in your home turf too! . . . . . A clear illustration of the conflict between livelihoods, culture, greed, and sustainability. The 'Shark' has existed in the oceans for 420 million years, and is essential to the health of our marine ecosystems. Humans, the destructive bastards, have walked but a fraction of this time, and our greatest necessity for these beautiful creatures is our own survival. At what point will the line be set in which our species unanimously acknowledges its destructive presence on this planet, and commits to righting the wrongs? #sustainable #shark #hammerhead #fishmarket #naturephotography #zanzibar #sharkweek #saveourplanet
