I've been watching, reading and listening to most of the discussions surrounding “Brownface/Blackface” situation featuring @justinpjtrudeau Just to be clear, this isn’t a Liberals vs. Conservatives vs. NDP vs. Green Party vs. Bloc Québécois vs. People’s Party Of Canada issue. I do not lend any of my platforms to my personal political beliefs. : : It would be so hypocritical of me to pretend that the images didn’t trigger me somehow. And all I could think of is this painting I’ve created is more important than I ever thought. : : : REPOSTED From my original post -June 24,2019. : “The Griot Recalls The Civil Rights Movement To The New Age Negress.” : Mixed Media On Canvas 36” X 48” : : : ( My paintings are less about the technical abilities of being a painter and more about what message you’re able to take away. I want you to think about my work on your drive home.... I want to tell you a story ) @natoyaellisart : : : #art #artistsoninstagram #blackface #artiststudios #vancouverartist #vancouverart #femaleartist #feministart #canadianart #blackwomanart #blaxploitation #canadianartist #cbcvancouver #cbcarts #representationalart #womenartist #racism #vancouver #visiualcommunication #contemporaryart #afrofuturisticblaxploitation #artpop #instaartist #painting #veryvancouver #visualart #blackhistory #blackcreatives #blackwoman #justnatoya

The rains came! Does anyone know any other places to "Seymour" salmon? Hey? Hey? 😉 Seymour river runs through the city, and spills out into Vancouver Harbour, right beside Highway 1, an active trainline, and a working shipyard, and each year sees the return of salmon to this river, returning nutrients to the upper forests and contining the cycle! #urbansalmon #underwaterphotography #wildsalmon #mynikonlife #ausgeo #CBCvancouver #sharecangeo #vancouverisawesome #wildlifephotography #earthcapture #natgeoyourshot #naturephotography #picoftheday #outdoorvancouver @pacificsalmonfoundation @river_snorkeling @seymoursalmon

After a long (but surreal ) week, the @vancitystreetcollective has completed its first exhibition, and I cannot be more proud of everyone who was involved and made it happen. As I was walking to transit Saturday evening, I saw this couple and it made me think of everyone in the collective; that truly, we’ve accomplished something we couldn’t have done on our own, and that we’re better together than apart. // ___ Thank you to all of our sponsors who helped make it happen, and @thebeaumontstudios for hosting us: @triceraprint @stickvancouver @beauphotostore @photoedmagazine Last but not least, thank you @cbcvancouver for featuring our work and the collective on the Radio, you helped spread the word and we appreciated the opportunity given to us. // ___ . . . . . #yvr_streetphoto #street_avengers #vancouverstreetphotography#streetphotography#streetfinder ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vancouver ⁣⠀ #friendsinstreets ⠀⠀⠀⠀ #bcncollective ⁣⠀⠀⠀ #shared_streets ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dreaminstreets#stayestray ⁣⠀ #urbanstreetphotogallery#streets_storytelling ⠀⠀ #streets_unseen ⁣⠀ #streetsacademy ⠀⠀ #under2kstreet #streetizm ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromstreetswithlove#dpsp_street ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #gf_streets ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #capturestreets ⠀⠀ #un_public #challengerstreets#eyeshot_magazine#streetgrammer#zonestreet#friendsinstreets#lensonstreets#photoobserve#curiouscameraclub #cbcvancouver

I had a sad incident happen the other night. I was driving along Hastings and noticed a person seemingly asleep against a building. It was an unusual spot, so I perked up, wondering if it was an overdose. A passerby by noticed as well, and walked over to investigate. They started talking to the sleeping person- no response. They looked up urgently, calling out for help. I pulled over and hopped out with a narcan kit, and tried to wake the person up by grabbing their shoulder. Thankfully, they woke up right away, said they were fine. We stuck around for a while, making sure the person was breathing okay, which they were. They weren't showing any other signs of overdose so we figured things were cool, and walked away. The passerby and I started chatting. They looked like they were in pretty rough shape. They had bruises, scratches, dirt all over their clothes, and were missing most of their teeth. They seemed sad, malnourished, exhausted, and possibly high. I’d guess they were dealing with trauma symptoms. They started rambling about how society should just let addicts overdose and die. It caught me off guard, especially given how concerned we both had just been about the person we thought was overdosing. I couldn’t get a word in. Their gist seemed to be that “regular” people should be able to carry on with our lives (I say ‘our’ because they specified that they were referring to me as well ), and that addicted people should just be left to die. This was pretty disheartening to hear. It reminded me of how brutally I’ve heard some people with addictions talk about themselves, how cruelly they self-criticized. I don’t usually hear people speak so harshly about people with addictions, as do people with addictions. A colleague reminded me the next day that when someone hits a low point mental health-wise, so much of it can manifest as ruthless internalized stigma and hatred. Addiction is super complicated, and by definition influences people to do bad things that nobody should have to put up with. Because of this I can understand some of the pain and fear that fuels the animosity people aim at people with addictions. But to me it’s obvious that.. (1/2 )

Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you. You must travel it by yourself. It is not far. It is within reach. Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know. Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and land. - Walt Whitman
