🐢 Happy #WorldTurtleDay ! I found an injured Midland Painted #Turtle that had been hit by a car while I was working with @cwf_fcf last year. I immediately took the turtle to Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary to get medical treatment. I got the call a few months later to release the healthy turtle back where I had found it (off the road! ). Please drive slow and watch for turtles this time of year. Call you local wildlife rehabilitator if you find an injured one. In Ontario, the main coordinator for turtle rehab is @ontarioturtlecc #BrakeForWildlife #turtles #PaintedTurtle #roads #road #RoadEcology #Wildlife #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #SpeciesAtRisk #AnimalRescue #WildlifeRescue #reptile #reptile #Shellebrate

• • • • • • Photo by @joelsartore This adorable creature covered in spots may look like a character from a children’s book, but it is actually a three-year old tiger quoll @moonlitsanctuary When full grown, this species is 50% larger than other quolls, making it the largest carnivorous marsupial in Australia. Before European settlement, there were four species of quoll that could be found across the Australian continent, but their numbers began to decline with the dawn of human development and expansion. Each adult quoll requires a large home range, meaning today there are few areas where this species can exist without encountering humans. Road-related deaths are quite common for this species, as the quoll often scavenges on road kill. You can play a part in ensuring this species’ survival by taking extra care when driving through areas of known quoll habitat, especially at night! Found this awesome Gray Tree Frog (Hyla versicolor ) with @elligrogers and @pete_craw last night! Elli found this individual under a bridge calling to so many other frogs while we were road cruising Tennessee (she named it George ). So blessed to have found so many amazing animals on our road trip home. Gopher tortoises like this one @zooatl got their name because of their ability to dig large, deep burrows similar to gopher holes. These burrows aren’t just important shelter for the tortoises –they're often taken over by other species living in the same area, making gopher tortoises a key player in ensuring the survival of many other animals native to the southern U.S.. Unfortunately, collisions with vehicles are a major threat to these tortoises, as many individuals have to cross roadways in order to forage, find mates, or build a new home. If you live in a state that the gopher tortoise calls home check out the link in my bio to learn best practices and how you can report a sighting. #tortoise #gophertortoise #brakeforwildlife #vulnerablespecies #photoark #savetogether

My friend sent me this picture of a gopher tortoise he spotted while on a hike. This tortoise suffered a very serious and painful injury (my guess is a car strike ) that likely took a very long time to heal. On the other hand, he seems to be getting around just fine. It’s not okay that he had to go through this, but what they go through and can recover from blows my mind. . 📸: Paul McKinley . #gophertortoise #tortoise #turtle #wildflorida #florida #floridawildlife #wildlife #brakeforwildlife #reptiles #brakefornature #brakeforturtles #wildlifeconservation #conservation #scicomm #turtlesofinstagram #roadecology #ecology

Montana traffic - these antlered folk don’t even stick to the right side of the road. The commute is rough going out here. 😏😉 • In reality, most wildlife opt for the plowed roads in the wintertime instead of expending precious energy trudging through deep, heavy snow. While driving for weather/road conditions is obvious, it’s also ideal to take a few more mph off (especially within Yellowstone boundary ) to account for what critter might be using the road just around the icy bend! • #wildlife #wildlifephotography #elk #wapiti #mymontanawinter #montanatraffic #thatswy #yellowstonenationalpark #givewildlifeabrake #brakeforwildlife

RIP Mama. It was confirmed to me this morning that this cow moose - the mother of a yearling calf - was recently hit and killed by a motorist on Hwy 20 near mile marker 377. The calf is now orphaned and trying to survive its first winter alone. Another reminder for each of us to slow down and be mindful of wildlife that may be utilizing roadways during times of deep snowpack. Lets give wildlife a brake. Thanks for listening. This gorgeous raven was hit by a car right in front of an officer from Dept of Animal Services. He quickly brought him to us and he responded quickly to treatment. We are still monitoring him, but so far, he is doing great. In fact, he's feeling so much better, he is finding entertainment in re-arranging everything in his cage. #sdwildlifecenter #sandiegowildlife #sandiegowildlifecenter #cawildlife #sdwildlife #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferehab #ravenbird #ravenbirds #corvids #corvid #corvidsofinstagram #smartestbird #ravenlover #iloveravens #instaraven #blackbirds #commonraven #backyardbirding #shadowsfromthesky #fortheloveofanimals #givewildlifeabrake #ibrakeforwildlife #brakeforwildlife

Its been awhile since I posted... So here's some video footage of a beautiful Florida Panther family from Florida Resident @carltonward trail cams. The Florida Panther population numbers are still low, but with the help of FWC and local Wildlife Conservation; these beautiful, mysterious and often misunderstood creatures are making a significant comeback....😍😍😍 #Florida #southflorida #flkeys #keyslife #saltlife #floridasaltfreak #keepfloridawild #floridawildlife #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #saveourwildlife #brakefornature #brakeforwildlife #floridapanther #floridapanthers #savethefloridapanther #floridapantherlove #pathofthepanther #Repost @carltonward ( @get_repost ) ・・・ Over the past year I’ve started incorporating video into my camera trapping efforts for the #PathofthePanther project. While I am still driven by the pursuit of decisive moments that still photographs provide, I have a growing appreciation for the power of video to give longer views and context for behavior. Here is a pair of clips from last month at @corkscrewswamp where the @audubonsociety has permitted me to deploy a camera system in the backcountry of their preserve. Although increasingly squeezed by development from Naples, this preserve protects habitat that allows the Florida panther population to welcome new generations. If we can protect the #FloridaWildlifeCorridor , it’s possible that a panther born at Corkscrew will one day cross the Caloosahatchee River to the north and help the endangered species recover into its historic territory throughout the Florida peninsula. The mother panther in this video is the same individual I witnessed with my own eyes and photographed a couple weeks before — perhaps the most memorable experience in my career as a conservation photographer. Last week Chris visited a library in West Shokan, New York and in his presentation he mentioned that the surrounding area was good habitat for wood turtles. Just after leaving the library, he spotted a wood turtle in the middle of the road and helped it across. He has now seen 6 wood turtles in the wild. Although they are common to New York, their numbers are diminishing due to loss of habitat and “removal” by humans. If you see one crossing the road, please help it to the other side (in the direction it was headed ) if you can do so safely. . . . #brakeforwildlife #wildlife #turtle #reptile #woodturtle #animalrescue

As you can see his snout is smaller and more narrow vs. the American Alligator which is wider and much thicker.... 🐊🐊😍😍 #florida #southflorida #flkeys #floridakeys #saltlife #floridasaltfreak #islandlife #islandvibes 🌴 #islamorada #tropicalisland #tropicalparadise #keyswildlife #keepfloridawild #brakeforwildlife #americansaltwatercrocodile #saltwatercrocodile #saltwatercroc

Please be extra careful driving this time of year. There are lots of animals trying to cross the road or getting startled into the road. Being more aware can possibly save a life. Someone hit this poor little starling this morning, but thanks to a wonderful rehabilitator (Kathy from a Place for Wild Birds in Berkeley, MA ), he’s getting the best care and will hopefully make a speedy recovery 💚💙 also, if anyone can donate, please do. Kathy relies on donations to help save the hundreds of birds she cares for, each year. Thank you 😍 #drivecarefully #brakeforwildlife #veganfortheanimals
