Photo by @amivitale Three young West African giraffe graze outside of Doulouwal Peulh, Niger - a village about 50 miles outside of the capital of Niamey where people live side by side with the endangered West African giraffe in the country's government-defined Giraffe Zone. Female giraffes give birth standing up and newborns are welcomed to the world with an almost five foot drop to the ground! However, within 30 minutes they are standing, and only hours later they are able to run with their mothers. At one point, the range of West African giraffe stretched across the Sahel, from Nigeria to Senegal. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss all contributed to the population's decline, and by the mid-90's, only 49 remained, in this zone. Today, while still highly threatened, thanks to heroic conservation efforts, they number 600. Photo by @amivitale West African giraffe browse in the early morning hours in Niger's Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where humans and giraffe coexist. Only 600 of the highly endangered West African giraffe exist in the world, so the government of Niger launched an ambitious plan to create a satellite population of the highly endangered species. With the help of Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Sahara Conservation Fund, eight animals were translocated Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve where they had been absent for 50 years. It was the first conservation effort of its kind for the West African subspecies. Photo by @amivitale Tonight, Feb. 27 in Prague, my exhibit Hope x Extinction opens at @czechphotocz at 6pm. I'll be giving an artist's talk and two VR films will be on display. The show kicks off the new Czech Photo Nature competition for Czech and Slovak photographers. Come see us! Learn more at czechphoto.org. The show runs until April 7. Here, an orphaned baby southern white rhino grazes at his home, Ol Pejeta Conservancy ( @olpejeta ). At the end of the 19th century, southern white rhino were on the brink of extinction with only one small population of 20-50 animals remaining in South Africa. Today, thanks to one of the most successful collective conservation efforts of the century, there are now thriving populations in east and southern Africa and there are now 20,000 of these amazing creatures. Despite this rebound, poaching remains a massive threat to all rhinos and each individual is carefully cared for and guarded. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves. Video by @amivitale Happy National Panda Day! Pandas, I learned from multiple trips to China and countless hours spent in their presence, are far more complex than their image suggests, and they offer powerful lessons as species across the globe are threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. They also own a success story that, while tentative, is all too rare. In 1990, the global wild panda population was approximately 1,100 individuals, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature placed them on the endangered species list. Thanks to massive Chinese and international efforts, though, the bears rebounded, and in 2016 their status was upgraded to vulnerable. I recently published my book, Panda Love, featuring my long-term work on these adorable ambassadors made on assignment for @NatGeo Signed copies are available on my website - amivitale.com @natgeo @natgeoimagecollection @thephotosociety @nikonusa #ipanda #panda #pandas #babypanda #pandamonium #ipanda #giantpanda #pandacub #endangered #china #conservation #savetheplanet #natureisspeaking #nikon #nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #amivitale

Photo by @amivitale Tomorrow, Feb. 27 in Prague, my exhibit Hope x Extinction opens at @czechphotocz at 6pm. I'll be giving an artist's talk and two VR films will be on display. The show kicks off the new Czech Photo Nature competition for Czech and Slovak photographers. Learn more and make plans to join me at czechphoto.org. The show runs until April 7. Here, an orphaned baby reticulated giraffe embraces @sararacamp wildlife keeper Lekupania. This giraffe will be rehabilitated and return to the wild, as a number of others have done before him. Right now, giraffe are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. The decline is thought to be caused by to habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but because there haven't been long term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly what it happening. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to better understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. Follow @doconnor16 @giraffe_conservation @sdzsafaripark to learn more. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. Photo by @amivitale Uma Ibrahim, collects water in the village of Hakanasou, Niger. Worldwide, women and girls spend collectively 200 million hours every day on this single task. The village is located inside the Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where giraffes and humans co-exist about 50 miles outside of Niger's capital, Niamey. For almost 50 years, the highly threatened West African giraffe has lived only in this region. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss have all contributed to the population's decline. Today, there are only 600 West African Giraffe in existence so the government of Niger with a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation ( @giraffe_conservation ) and Sahara Conservation Fund worked to create a satellite population by moving eight of them to Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve. The translocation will help ensure bolster the chances of the subspecies' survival. All are doing wonderfully in their new home. Video by @amivitale Reteti Elephant Sanctuary ( @r.e.s.c.u.e ) keeper Silus leads little Lemorijo during an evening feed. Feeding is a big part of the day’s work for the handlers. Half-gallon-size bottles of special formula are given every three hours around the clock, and drinking is a noisy, slurpy affair. Afterward the elephants fall into a deep stupor. Reteti is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. The sanctuary provides a safe place for injured elephants to heal and later, be returned back to the wild. Photo by @amivitale Keeper Adnan feeds three orphaned baby rhinos at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy ( @lewa_wildlife ) in #Kenya Animals here receive dedicated, constant care from their keepers, who look after their health and help prepare them for life in the wild. Indigenous communities are on the front lines of the fight against poaching and landscape destruction, making them the best protectors of the endangered wildlife around them. Adnan spends 12 hours every day watching over the vulnerable baby rhinos. If you went back 50 years, this is where one of the densest populations of black rhinos lived but today most people living here have never seen a rhino in their life despite it being the most perfect habitat for them. In 2 generations, this animal was poached almost to extinction. These communities and people like Adnan hold the key to saving Africa's great animals. The Nature Conservancy in Africa ( @nature_africa ), the Northern Rangelands Trust ( @nrt_kenya ) and Lewa are doing incredible work to strengthen these communities, who hold the key to saving Africa's great animals. BY SHARING THIS PHOTO YOU HELP AFRICA ANIMALS, THANK YOU Photo by @amivitale An orphaned southern white rhino rests at Ol Pejeta Conservancy ( @olpejeta ) in northern Kenya. At the end of the 19th century, only one population of 20-50 southern white rhinos remained, in South Africa. Today, thanks to one of the most successful collective conservation efforts of the century, they number 20,000 and are found in East and South Africa. They were introduced at @olpejeta in 2005 and today @olpejeta cares for 30 of them. Their presence helped make @olpejeta an ideal spot for the translocation of the last northern white rhinos. Introducing the newly arrived northern white rhinos to random groups of wild southern white rhinos in their natural environment inspired the long-time zoo dwelling inhabitants to find their wild roots. Over time, natural traits became more prominent - even motivating the northern white to begin mating. You can help support the incredible @olpejeta For a contribution of just $10, you'll have a chance to WIN a personal photo safari with me here, Kenya’s @olpejeta (Link in Profile ). Photo by @amivitale | A reticulated giraffe towers above the shrubbery at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. One of the theories put forward as to why giraffe have such long necks is that it gives them an advantage in securing nutrients. They can reach leaves that no other animals can. Others posit that the long necks are a result of sexual selection since male giraffes battle with their necks to win mates. Most recently, scientists have hypothesized that the long necks are to help fight the African heat. The greater surface area allows more heat can escape. Whichever it may be, these fascinating creatures are in trouble. Their numbers have fallen 30 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to about 110,000 today. Reticulated giraffe number fewer than 16,000. "An orphaned baby reticulated giraffe embraces @sararacamp wildlife keeper Lekupania. This giraffe will be rehabilitated and return to the wild, as a number of others have done before him. This was one of those moments where you could see how clearly the stewards of this land, the indigenous Samburu warriors of northern Kenya, care for the wildlife they share the land with. Currently, giraffe are undergoing what is being termed a silent extinction. Estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. The decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but because there haven't been long term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly what is happening. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to better understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. Empowering communities like the Samburu will be crucial to saving these and other iconic species around the world. Follow @giraffe_conservation to learn more." SHARE THIS PHOTO IF YOU CARE, THANK YOU from @julia land_ . . . Photo by @amivitale Happy Save the Elephant Day! Here, Rimland Lemojong, a Samburu keeper sits with Kinya, a two week old elephant that fell into a well in Sera wildlife conservancy in northern Kenya. After waiting close to 36 hours, Kinya's mother never came back for her and she was brought to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary ( @r.e.s.c.u.e ). Reteti is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in all of Africa. It provides a home to elephants orphaned as a result of poaching, human wildlife conflict and drought related issues. All of these elephants will one day be returned to the wild to live the life they were meant to lead. What’s happening at Reteti, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way humans relate to wild animals. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about people as it is about elephants. @nrt_kenya @kenyawildlifeservice @sandiegozoo @tusk_org @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeoimagecollection @nikonusa @magicalkenya #protectelephants #bekindtoelephants #DontLetThemDisappear #elephants #saveelephants #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #magicalkenya #whyilovekenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #amivitale #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador

Photo by @amivitale Kamara is nuzzled by black rhino Kilifi who he hand-raised along with two other baby rhinos at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy ( @lewa_wildlife ) in Kenya. Kamara spends 12 hours every day watching over the vulnerable orphaned animals. This area was once home to one of the densest black rhino populations. Today, most locals have never seen a rhino in their life, despite it being the most perfect habitat for them. In just 2 generations this animal was poached almost to extinction. These communities and people like Kamara hold the key to saving Africa's great animals. In honor of World Rhino Day on Sept. 22, I am sharing some of my favorite images of these magnificent, ancient creatures. Together we can work to save them - visit and support the communities that protect them. Keep an eye on my stories - I’m working on a special mystery project this week and will reveal more soon. @nrt_kenya @tusk_org @kenyawildlifeservice @thephotosociety @natgeo @nature_org @nikonusa @sdzsafaripark @nature_africa @synology official #WorthMoreAlive #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #magicalkenya #africa #everydayafrica #worldrhinoday #photojournalism #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonambassadors #amivitale

Photo by @amivitale Yusuf, then a keeper at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy ( @lewa_wildlife ) in central Kenya, slept among three orphaned baby rhinos. This was my first glimpse into the unwavering commitment of these keepers and the sacrifices they make to protect endangered animals. The calf he rested his head on was orphaned when poachers killed his mother at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy ( @olpejeta ), about 50 miles away. Keepers like Yusuf, who now works at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary ( @r.e.s.c.u.e ), along with Kenya’s indigenous communities are on the front lines of the fight against poaching and landscape destruction, making them the best protectors of the endangered wildlife around them. The Nature Conservancy in Africa ( @nature_africa ), the Northern Rangelands Trust ( @nrt_kenya ) and Lewa are doing incredible work to strengthen these communities, who hold the key to saving Africa's great animals. Together we can work to save them - visit and support the communities that protect them. @nrt_kenya @tusk_org @kenyawildlifeservice @thephotosociety @natgeo @nature_org @nikonusa @sdzsafaripark @nature_africa @synology official #WorthMoreAlive #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #magicalkenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonambassadors #amivitale

SHARE THIS PHOTO IF YOU CARE, THANK YOU Photo by @amivitale A sincere note of gratitude to the editors at both @Time and @CNN who have named this photo as one of the Best Photos of 2018. It was a painful moment showing Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet, being comforted by keeper Joseph Wachira moments before he passed away March 19, 2018 at @olpejeta conservancy in northern Kenya. To watch the last of something die is something I hope never to experience again but Sudan was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him. If there is any meaning in his death, it's that Sudan can be our final wake up call. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of the landscape and part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves. @Time allowed me to write about this moment in "A Photographer Shares the Final Moments of the Last Male Northern White Rhino" - head to Time.com to read it and learn more about the meaning of this moment as we witness extinction right now, on our watch. Follow @olpejeta @safari_park_dvur_kralove @nature_africa and others to learn more and get involved. @everydayextinction @kenyawildlifeservice @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeoimagecollection #LastManStanding #SudanForever #WorthMoreAlive #OlPejetaRhinos #NorthernWhiteRhinos #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #nikonusa #nikon #nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #amivitale

SHARE IF YOU CARE ABOUT SLOTHERING ANIMALS IN AFRICA. THANK YOU! Mike Learka gives some loving to Nadasoit on the left and little Lemorijo, orphaned elephants at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary ( @r.e.s.c.u.e ) in northern Kenya. What’s happening at Reteti, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way Samburus relate to wild animals they have long feared. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. The sanctuary provides a safe place for injured elephants to heal and later, be returned back to the wild. You can support this incredible place and the people who protect wildlife. Make a $10 contribution in support of Reteti for a chance to win a trip to Kenya, see Dave Matthews in concert, take home a @rockbridgeguitar that features a custom inlay of an elephant hand-drawn by Dave and receive a @nikonusa D7500 18-300mm VR Lens Kit with @prizeo (Link in profile ). Not only will you be helping care for orphaned baby elephants and strengthening community ties, you’ll also have a chance to win a life-changing trip to see the sanctuary in person. The first $10,000 in funds raised will be generously matched by Elephant Gems ( @elephantgems ). Reteti operates in partnership with Conservation International ( @conservationorg ) who provide critical operational support and work to scale the Reteti community-centered model to create lasting impacts worldwide. #sunday #share Posted @withrepost@julia land_ SHARE AND SAVE THE RINOS, THANK YOU Photo by @amivitale Here is a powerful example of the work being done to save these incredible creatures. In 2014, I witnessed a group of Samburu warriors encounter a rhino for the first time in their lives at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy ( @lewa_wildlife ). Only their grandfathers saw rhinos in the wild and these young men had never even seen a photo of one. Based on stories and their own imaginations, they expected the young rhinos to be as big as elephants, as dangerous as lions and for their horns to be flexible, like an elephant's trunk. Much-needed attention has been focused on the plight of wildlife, but very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the frontlines of the poaching wars. The Nature Conservancy in Africa ( @nature_africa ), the Northern Rangelands Trust ( @nrt_kenya ) and Lewa @lewa_wildlife are doing incredible work to strengthen these communities, who hold the key to saving Africa's great animals.
