Leading diamond producers recognize that mining activities are complex and can affect the air, land and water. Thus, the diamond industry is constantly evaluating its operations and instituting new programs to improve environmental performance and work to make tangible progress to minimize environmental impact. In fact, diamond mining companies actually protect three times the amount of land that they use. Learn more at https://buff.ly/2yDdUQz #DiamondsDoGood #RealIsRare #TotalClarity

"It's time diamonds become symbolic of the good that they do," said Marcus ter Haar, D.E.F. Board Member and Managing Director of Okavango Diamond Company (ODC ), in his address to the Plenary Meeting of the Policy Dialogue on Natural Resource-based Development earlier this summer. "Botswana has produced and continues to produce some of the worlds most impressive and valuable gems the world has seen through the last five decades of responsible mining and selling. These gemstones have generated income that contributes to a nation being housed, schooled and provided with healthcare and infrastructure. Diamonds have built the foundations for a modern progressive African nation," he said. To learn more about how #DiamondsDoGood in Botswana visit diamondsdogood.com

These mountains formed over hundreds of millions of years as two tectonic plates collided and pushed the earth upward. Glaciers then continued to shape the rugged peaks and deep valleys. This process has created some of the most iconic landscapes in North America, like Jasper National Park, pictured here. I also recently learned that Northern Canada is one of the few places on earth where something else extremely rare has formed. In the earth's mantle, deep beneath the surface, over billions of years and under an immense amount of pressure, the hardest natural material known to man is created—diamonds! Over time, these precious gems have been brought to the surface in magma from volcanic eruptions, forming Kimberlite pipes where diamonds are found. Today, these diamonds are mined in sustainable ways that you might not expect: mining companies use efficient methods that recycle water, protect 3x the land used for mining, and pay workers on average 5x the living wage in their countries. Now more than ever it’s important to understand where our resources come from and how we can help protect these places for future generations to come. @realisadiamond #RealisRare #Sponsored #TotalClarity #Canada

South African photographer @craighowes has seen many of the world’s most incredible, natural wonders. However, on a recent trip that kept him closer to home, he learned how much of his home country’s naturally beautiful landscape has been preserved thanks in part to efforts by local diamond producing companies. Did you know that the modern diamond industry has a relatively small footprint worldwide, using a total global area only about the size of New York City for diamond recovery? Not only that, but diamond producing companies protects three-times the amount of land used for mining worldwide. #RealisRare #TotalClarity

⁣Traveling does something to you—if you do it right, you leave the country feeling like you took a little bit of it with you. ⠀ ⠀ So here I am reminiscing about my trip to South Africa, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been—rich in people, history, culture. Amazingly diverse in its landscapes, from mountains to caves, from wildlife to cityscapes, from beaches to vineyards.⠀ ⠀ Did you know that South Africa also happens to be a leading producer of diamonds? Contrary to popular belief, there have been many changes in modern diamond mining over the last 20 years. ⠀ ⠀ Today leading diamond producers employ over 77K people worldwide creating over $3.9B in local benefits through civic partnerships. Most goods are sourced locally and most employees are also from local communities.⠀ ⠀ And because this beautiful landscape is what makes South Africa unique, environmentally friendly practices have been put in place, such as 83% of water used being recycled. The industry has also committed to reinvesting locally into social programs, including education and healthcare.⠀ ⠀ It’s good to know that there is a shift to preserve the natural beauty of a country like South Africa but more importantly that profits stay in the country to benefit the communities that do the work.⠀ ⠀ Link in my bio/stories if you want to find out more. @realisadiamond #RealisRare #TotalClarity #sponsored

The landscapes in Canada are like nowhere else in the world, but I think the thing that impresses me the most is how grand and distinct the mountains are. Simply put, the Canadian Rockies are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Every time I visit, it’s like I’m seeing them for the first time all over again. I recently learned that Canada is also home to some of the world’s most brilliant natural diamonds. Leading diamond producers are committed to water conservation and recycle on average an impressive 83% of the water used in diamond recovery. The diamond mining industry also has a relatively small land footprint due to the compact size of their operations. Globally, leading diamond miners use a combined area of 325 square miles – an area about the size of New York City. And they invest significantly in conservation efforts, protecting 3x the land they use for mining, an area equivalent in size to Yosemite National Park. @RealisaDiamond #RealisRare #TotalClarity #sponsored

The landscape in Northern Alberta, Canada is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen. From my first time seeing the northern lights and attending the annual Dark Sky Festival to this incredible canoe trip, I always leave with a new sense of wonder and appreciation for this magical place. As it turns out, Canada is one of the countries in which the diamond mining industry has had a positive impact on land and water conservation. Leading diamond producers protect 3x more land than they use for mining, and recycle 83% of the water used during the process. That means landscapes similar to the one above will be around and untouched for generations to come. The glowing ancient landscape of Australia.✨🏜 The colours of our land and sky as the sun starts to disappear below the horizon highlighting every surface of rock with a orange glow. These rocks hold so much power – intertwined with cultural beliefs and the creation stories which surround so much of this expansive land in Northern Australia. ✧
Recently I’ve been curious to understand more about our earth, the geology that makes up our planet and the value behind how we are using our natural resources. Northern Australia is home to some of the most incredibly rare diamonds on our planet. Our magical earth produces these gems deep in her core where an immense pressure transforms carbon into diamonds, a process that takes over 1-3 billion years when volcanic eruptions bring them to the surface. Leading diamond producers recognise that the process behind the industry is complex and like many actions on earth can affect our planet's air, land and water. However, diamond mining is less harmful to the environment than other types of mining as it does not make use of toxic chemicals. Despite the environmental risks, the industry has a relatively small footprint on the land due to the compact size of their operations. Investing significantly in conservation efforts, they protect three times the land they use for mining globally and are committed to water conservation and recycling – with on average 83% of water used in diamond recovery being recycled.

Our world is full of so much wonder… On a geological timeline we as humans have existed on our planet for such a small amount of time. The incredible rock formations which form our earth and are hidden throughout the many surface layers of our planet, are created from ancient geologic processes. This occurs gradually over millions and billions of years, yet are imperceptible in our lifetime. Understanding where our resources come from and the processes behind them are more important now than ever before. Our home only has finite resources, making it crucial for us to carefully consider our lifestyle choices and the ways in which we can protect it for future generations. @realisadiamond #sponsored #RealisRare #TotalClarity

Recently I’ve been reflecting back on my time in South Africa and just how diverse and beautiful this country is. I must admit that before I went on this trip, I had quite a narrow view of the country. I had visited a few years earlier to volunteer at a children’s home, however my experience was limited to being inside a gated community in a dodgy part of Johannesburg and visiting an unethical “safari” park that clearly mistreated its animals. ⁣ ⁣ This time around, I got to see a whole different side of South Africa. It involved getting up close and personal with safari animals that roamed freely in a nature reserve, surfing on a stunning white-sand beach, kayaking through dramatic canyons, ziplining through ancient rainforests, hiking through the mountains, camping under the stars to experiencing the buzzing metropolis of Cape Town. ⁣ ⁣ This trip also helped me to gain a much deeper understanding of South Africa as a country. This included a more in depth understanding of the economy. One driving factor of South Africa’s economy is the diamond industry, which is actually one of the largest diamond industries in the world. ⁣ ⁣ This got me thinking… We always hear that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but what about the relationship between diamonds and the country that produces them? While there are two sides to every story (and I believe it is imperative to do your own research to come up with a balanced view ), I was interested to learn some of the positive impacts that the diamond industry is having on the local communities in South Africa. Leading diamond producers create US $16 billion of net benefit, nearly 60% of which flows back into local communities. Whether it is clothing, electronics or jewellery, it is important to know the impacts of the industries we buy into, both positive and negative, so we can make informed purchasing decisions! ⁣ ⁣ @realisadiamond #TotalClarity #RealisRare #Sponsored

My recent trip to Botswana was an eye opener for me. This is one of the most diverse countries to experience a safari and learn more about how this country became one of the biggest success stories in Africa. In 1967 shortly after the country claimed Independence, diamonds were discovered in Botswana. This has led to an incredibly rapid success story for a country that was once one of the poorest in Africa when it gained independence in 1966. Botswana is now considered one of the safest to visit and offers some of the most diverse landscapes for wildlife viewing. My favourite finds so far are the Okavango Delta in wet season and the Kalahari Desert to see the Meerkats. To think so much growth and development came from a mineral is crazy!
