Blevyns Jumper ( @_blevynsjumper ), a Native American of Seminole Tribe of Florida, adjusts his lasso by the shipping pens at the Big Cypress Reservation last week. Here I’m starting to experiment with studio lighting in the field. There’s single strobe and reflector my assistant is holding off to the right that helps fill in the shadows and balance the exposure with the bright sky, dirt and water. What do you think about the look? Check the alternate frame in my story. I am thankful for Seminole friends who are living out connection to the land over millennia and have shared some of their world with me. #Seminole #NativePride #showtourpassion #floridawild #KeepFLWild

Rock Hill Sunrise. This photo is of @matt_pearcep1 penning cows on Rock Hill Ranch. Matt’s Great grandfather started this ranch on the shore of Lake Okeechobee before the dike was built. I enjoyed listening to Matt talk about his heritage and the attachment he has to these places. It was very cool hearing stories of his family grazing cows down to Lake O before the dike. What draws us to the scrub? Is it the search for something intimate in the remote and seemingly desolate? Is it the subtleties of life here? Is it the sharp and quick line between life and death? Perhaps it speaks to the survivalist in us? In the scrub water is king and shade is queen. The xeric landscape shatters arrogance. It speaks only to inner silence and tests perseverance. You have to play by the rules of the land or suffer the consequences. To be a denizen of the scrub you trust yourself or you die. 🌐 📷: @grandioseideations #flhiker #americanhiking #floridahikes #wildlifetracking #realflorida #hikefl #floridahikingalliance #NatureFL #flogrown #floridatrails #therealflorida #floridaexplored #explorefl #hiker_collective #hikingculture #raw_florida #roamflorida #lovefl #wildflorida #keepfloridawild #keepflwild #pureflorida #floridaproud #floridalife #iloveflorida #sunshinestate #flstateparks #hikingaddict #naturalflorida #onlyinflorida

Some parts marked and the map outdated nobody had been to this specific spot in more than a year if not more. I'm just glad I had another hiking friend with me cause its easy to get lost in this area since much of its overgrown or some parts underwater and you have to jump ditches with water. I honestly like when places are untamed and nobody has trekked it in awhile. #hikeflorida #floridahikes #nature #naturelover #natureporn #floridanature #naturegram #instanature #exploreflorida #floridaexplored #florida #northflorida #northeastflorida #untamableflorida #underratedflorida #wandererofsunshine #keepflwild #naturescape #naturephotography #february2019

I had an amazing time just being there by myself and hanging out with God’s creation. Anyone else just love being outside and creating your own adventures?? Where are YOU going to explore next? Photo by Carlton Ward Jr. @carltonward | Swipe for panoramic: July is peak season for cattle ranching in Florida. Ranchers from across the state will gather their herds for the annual sale of calves. I’m looking forward to getting back there, including spending a week with the Seminole tribe. In addition to being one of the top producers of cattle in America, the Seminoles also raise quarter horses. I’ll never forget this morning a few years back at the Brighton Reservation, when this train of horses came thundering out of the fog and then disappeared. @fl_wildcorridor @natgeoimagecollection #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild #horses #Seminole #NativePride

what's your favorite florida wildlife lore? . while working for the forest service, I heard a fantastic story about a neighboring landowner who called the office one day. the gentleman complained that one of the forest's golden monkeys was lose on his property. it was explained that the forest did not own any golden monkeys that staff was aware of, but that FWC should be contacted with all wildlife concerns. after an investigation by a less than amused commission employee, it was determined that the monkey was, in fact, a very happy and healthy and native fox squirrel. the landowner was shocked and our office was entertained. . . . #alegendisborn #forestfunnies #shermansfoxsquirrel #sciurusnigershermani #foxsquirrel #floridafauna #nativewildlife #keepflwild #therealflorida #floridawildlife

#repost @fl_wildcorridor ・・・ We're excited to share some BIG news! Our friends at @nflandtrust have teamed with conservation groups and the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service to create a greenway through the Ocala to Osceola Wildlife Conservation Corridor project, or “O2O.” This is a critical link within the statewide Florida Wildlife Corridor, so this project is VERY important to our mission. Please check out this story map to learn more about this corridor and what is being done to save it (link in bio! ) #KeepFLWild #ConnectProtectRestore

The locals are pretty intimidating 🦀 . . . Fun Fact: the Blue Land Crab, Cardisoma guanhumi, is a slow-growing species compared to most other crabs. It requires more than 60 molts – roughly three times more than other species of crab – to reach its full size. The crab will generally seal the exit to its burrow using mud, 6–10 days before it molts, in order to protect itself from predators. 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀 #wildlifewednesday #funfacts

This streaked fig sphinx (Protambulyx strigilis ) landed on the lip of this ghost orchid bloom last summer, probed it’s proboscis (tongue ) deep into the nectar spur, bringing its head down into the throat of the flower when the pollen is held and then did a back dive off. Total time in contact with the bloom was just under one second. Once the moth landed and broke the laser beam of the trigger, the camera fired a burst at a rate of 8 frames per second. Notice the flower bounce in the 9th frame. I am thankful that after three years trying my camera trap was able to capture this fleeting moment. The probing and potential pollination is even faster than I expected. The first frame of the sequence is now online in the August Issue of National Geographic Magazine with a story by @Doug las_main describing discoveries I made with @macstonephoto @peter_houlihan , Mark Danaher and colleagues (link in my bio ). Be sure to watch the new short film Chasing Ghosts by @bio_graphic @grizzlycreekfilms @bendicci and @jeffreedfilm #chasingghosts #hititandquitit #pollination #pathofthepanther #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild

I spy.... The Florida black bear is not a ferocious killer nor is it a cute teddy bear, they typically want nothing to do with you and will run and hide when given the chance, just don’t get between a momma and her cubs.. Like most wildlife, if you don’t bother it, the bear likely won’t bother you. #savetheglades #floridablackbear #floridabear #keepflwild

Check out Carlton’s Chasing Ghosts series @carltonward 📷 #repost @carltonward ・・・ Chasing Ghosts [2 of 9] >>> My life has been shaped by these three ghost orchids during the past three years. Each of these three photos was made from a camera trap, but instead of the laser trigger taking the photo, I pressed the shutter myself to capture moments of twilight and weather in the swamp. The seemingly impossible task of camera trapping a moth pollinating an orchid gave me an excuse to revisit these orchids over and over, and I developed strong connections to their homes in the swamp. The process was therapeutic for me. During the previous three years, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expeditions had given me a phenomenal opportunity to trek more than 2,000 miles through Florida’s wildest places. But we always kept moving, rarely camping in the same place for more than one night. After the 2015 expedition, I had a disticnt longing to go deeper into places. The Path of the Panther project gave me that chance. And my ghost orchid distraction pulled me even deeper into a single place — the Fakahatchee Strand — a stronghold for the last puma in the east and the highest diversity or orchids in America. It’s an enchanted place that still holds many mysteries waiting to be discovered. My camera traps gave me a portal into this world and an excuse to explore it. I can close my eyes now and see every detail of the paddling trail leading me into these magical swamps thanks to repeating the journey dozens of times in every kind of weather and light. #Fakahatchee #Everglades #ghostorchid #chasingghosts #FloridaWild #KeepFLWild @FL_WildCorridor @insidenatgeo

A small gulf coast “village” which has been referred to by many as the “last frontier of Florida” . . This community whose population is around 200, survives strictly off local sole proprietorships. capitalism at it’s finest. . . . I love this town so much simply because they work hard for everything they have, the community as a whole! Those who don’t believe in capitalism, come spend a week in a town like this with the locals...learn from experience and put down your book, or should I say phone... . . . Support your locals, eat their food, share their stories, be apart of history wherever you are.🇺🇸 . . . . . #shoplocal #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocal #smalltown #coastal #gulfcoast #florida #realflorida #notourism #hardwork #shrimpers #boat #boating #crabber #floridalife #florida_greatshots #hashtagflorida #locals #keepflwild #naturecoast #floridanaturecoast #village #capitalism #america #freedom #canon #classic #appreciation #photography #floridalifestyle
