If you've visited the Smokies, there's a good chance you've been through Cades Cove. This peaceful little valley is not maintained by accident or by magic -- it takes a lot of work by dedicated employees to protect and preserve this crowd-favorite historic district in GSMNP. #FundMeFriday ⠀ ⠀ Cades Cove Fencing & Historic Maintenance ($52,600 )⠀ Over the last several years, park staff have repaired or replaced the most critical fences around Cades Cove. The park now has 44,000 feet of barbless wire fencing, 4,900 feet of locust worm fencing, and 3,200 feet of locust post and stacked rail fencing. These funds help support two seasonal employees who maintain these fences along with 13 cemeteries and 9 historic structures in Cades Cove.⠀ ⠀ Discover & Donate at FriendsOfTheSmokies.org.

Each Friday, we are sharing a project from our 2019 Park Support List that your donations help fund. We call it #FundMeFriday !⠀ ⠀ Reduce Ginseng Poaching through Marking Ginseng Roots ($5,000 )⠀ These funds support an annual ginseng marking blitz. Market demands place heavy pressure on this resource from illegal harvesters who poach for profit. This program is a very cost-effective way to assist in the deterrence and detection of commercial poaching of this at-risk resource. Over the years park biologists have marked and replanted most of the 13,000 roots that law enforcement seized. Monitoring shows that today many of these roots have survived and are again thriving in these mountains.⠀ Remember, you are not allowed to pick or harvest any plants inside the national park (with a few exceptions by permit ). #LeaveNoTrace ⠀ ⠀ Discover & Donate at FriendsOfTheSmokies.org.
