Photo by @bertiegregory // A big male black bear foraging at low tide on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. The lives of many of the bears than live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, are ruled by the tides. As the tide drops and the water retreats, it reveals a seafood feast. On this particular section of boulder covered beaches, this bear is on the hunt for crabs. Using its incredible strength (these rocks are really heavy, I’ve tried! ), the bears flip the rocks over one by one and eat what they find underneath. Sleeping is something Koala do very well. So well in fact, that it’s what they do for the vast majority of every day! Not because they are lazy but their diet of eucalyptus leaves requires a vast amount of energy to digest. It’s best to be inactive when you’re digesting a plant that has evolved to stop predators eating its leaves. . However, make no mistake when koala are awake and especially when competing for a mate, they can be fast, very very aggressive, and deafeningly vocal! . Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // A loggerhead sea turtle swims near the water’s surface, followed closely by a tiny fish companion, which seeks refuge under its shell from predators. Loggerhead turtles lead quite a journey early in their lives. They are born in Florida’s warm beaches and leisurely make their way along the Gulf Stream, riding the waves as they travel towards the Azores. I spent only a couple moments with this pair, mesmerized by their unique relationship, before they swam down into the deep, together. #FollowMe at @CristinaMittermeier for more photos and stories from the ocean. #TurningTheTide #turtle #nature #photography

Photo by @shaazjung | As a tracker and photographer who specialises in documenting leopards in dense forests, the joy of finding that perfect opening in the canopy, is unsurpassable. When it’s layers of leaves part, look for the most bent branch, for in jungle, the most contorted trees often carry the most elusive leopards. . . Shot in Nagarhole National Park. On assignment for @natgeowild Follow @shaazjung for more of the jungles best secrets.

Video by @alexbraczkowski Sound On🎙! Give this a like if you’re excited that it’s the weekend 👍 This chimpanzee is pan-hooting. It is a type of call that is often done in chorus with several chimps in the group (high ranking adult males predominantly produce this call ) and it can be used to display dominance of the family group and can be used to signal to family members where fruit trees are located. The dominance level of an individual is also often correlated to the level of their hooting! With two cubs to feed, she’s determined to do anything she can to secure the best salmon location for her family. Video @filipe_deandrade and @brianmoghari // For Hummingbirds, even the ordinary is eye striking. This male Fiery-Throated Hummingbird takes a few seconds to preen and shake off some bad vibes from all the days drama. They live their lives in a constant state of friction, defending their food sources with vigor and tenacity. In order to capture even the mundane moments in their lives we had to film at 3,000 frames per second. That means slowing 1 second down to 2.5 minutes. Follow @filipe_deandrade for more wildlife adventures.

Photo by @Shannon__Wild // I spy with my little eye! Did you know that chameleons can move their eyes independently? The chameleons' eyes can rotate and focus separately on 180-degree arcs, so they can see two different objects at the same time. This gives them a full 360-degree field of vision. ⠀ Photographed in Madagascar in 2018. ⠀ Follow me @Shannon__Wild for more photos and videos of wildlife from around the world where I also share my camera settings for budding photographers.

Video by @sandesh_kadur We were anchored very close to the #equator just off the coast of Fernandina island in the Galápagos. Jumped in to the turquoise blue waters & came across these beautiful ancient mariners. Spent the next hour cruising along filming the Green Sea Turtles underwater feeding on the algae rocks. What a magical experience :- ) It’s been a long time since I spent so much time underwater & now I don’t want to get out!

Photo @jasonedwardsng A large downy chick in a Gentoo Penguin colony offers me a passing glance. I’m not a source of food nor a threat that the large well-fed youngster recognises, just a novelty moving through its icy world. . And for me that is all I ever want to be when I photograph wildlife. Ideally, invisible but when you’re this close the best one can hope for is non-invasive. Ensure that the animal is doing what it was doing, before you came along and remains undisturbed. . Photo by @journeying_justin This male lion bares the scars of brutal territorial disputes with other male lions. First, male lions will use more subtle hints to establish their territory, like urinating around the perimeter and roaring, but if another rival ignores those signs and decides to travel through anyway, males will often do what it takes to maintain their pride and their hunting grounds. . Photo by @joelsartore This adorable creature covered in spots may look like a character from a children’s book, but it is actually a three-year old tiger quoll @moonlitsanctuary When full grown, this species is 50% larger than other quolls, making it the largest carnivorous marsupial in Australia. Before European settlement, there were four species of quoll that could be found across the Australian continent, but their numbers began to decline with the dawn of human development and expansion. Each adult quoll requires a large home range, meaning today there are few areas where this species can exist without encountering humans. Road-related deaths are quite common for this species, as the quoll often scavenges on road kill. You can play a part in ensuring this species’ survival by taking extra care when driving through areas of known quoll habitat, especially at night! To catch another glimpse of this species, follow me, @joelsartore #quoll #tigerquoll #adorable #carnivore #marsupial #australia #brakeforwildlife #photoark #savetogether

Photo by @amivitale // A baby panda mouths a basket, part of bumper crop of adorable baby giant panda cubs at the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Sichuan Province. Nearly 50 percent of giant pandas births are to twins, but the mothers can care for only one cub at a time so keepers in China have developed a careful process for swapping each baby so they are fed both by their mother and by hand. Baby pandas wean from their mothers between 8-9 months and a year old and generally stay with their mothers for 2 years. My book, Panda Love: The Secret Lives of Pandas, features my long-term work on these adorable ambassadors made on assignment for National Geographic. Photo @jasonedwardsng It’s not always about having the best light shining directly on your subject, that super-saturated hue of the golden hour. It’s a myth that you’re always in the right place at the right time, that you planned and researched exactly when and where you should be. In reality that is just social media hype. . We all do our best of course, but sometimes you happen across a scene and in those few seconds have to make a decision. Do I want a blown-out foreground or an accurate background? As is often the case, less is more. . When this Leopard descended the tree it was all over in a blink. I consciously stopped my exposure down and metered off the background. The elegant lines of the beautiful cat were enough to tell the story of my brief encounter, and I was happy! Make every moment count but don’t miss the moment yourself, it’s just a photo after all.
