“Oliver [Laxe] and I wanted to keep the imagery as naturalistic and minimalistic as possible, nothing forced or glorified, so as to create a passionate poignancy of anger and sorrow that grows on you in small degrees – the frailty of Benedicta, the haunted look of Amador, and especially raw power of the wildfires themselves. I am always happy to shoot on film. Film has something different, a kind of spiritual aura, in the colours and shades it registers, that video just does not have.” ⠀ Read the full interview with cinematographer Mauro Herce in the latest #InCamera on @festivaldecannes -winning feature "O Que Arde (Fire Will Come )". “With celluloid, I love the magic of not knowing exactly what we’ll see, as they are so very many variables – such as the chemicals, the temperature and speed of processing, etcetera. The world of film is metaphysical, and so is true Cinema. The benefits are aesthetic and spiritual.” ⠀ Read as "Give Me Liberty" Director Kirill Mikhanovsky and DP @WyattGarfield share about their film - which premiered in the Director's Fortnight section at #Cannes2019 - in the latest #InCamera : kodak.com/go/incamera (link in bio ) ⠀ #FilmMatters #ShotOnFilm #s16mm / @givemelibertyproductions

“Shooting 2-perf 35mm automatically delivers a 2.40:1 widescreen aspect ratio, which perfectly complemented the prologue footage Hlynur [Pálmason] had already shot, as well as the landscapes that we were going to be shooting. Ultimately, we felt it was also in tune with the struggle of the central character in the story." ⠀ "A White, White Day" was shot on 2-perf on Kodak 35mm film, and screened in the International Critic’s Week at #Cannes2019 where lead Ingvar E. “From the very beginning, the format for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was widescreen celluloid – meaning 35mm Anamorphic – unless we were shooting Rick Dalton’s Western television series, then we were 35mm B&W. And we shot with spherical zooms mostly in 1:33. There were also two sequences, at Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski’s home, that we shot on Kodak Ektachrome, one in 16mm and the other on Super8mm.” ⠀ Quentin Tarantino’s highly-anticipated, Manson-murder era drama, #OnceUponATimeInHollywood premieres today at #Cannes2019 Read the full interview about how it was made with DP Robert Richardson ASC in the latest #InCamera : kodak.com/go/incamera(link in bio ) ⠀ #FilmMatters #ShotOnFilm #35mm #16mm #Super8 / Copyright: © 2018 CTMG, Inc. “It is not really the aesthetics of film that attract me, which I think are beautiful, of course. It is more about the filmmaking process and how its methods and practices help my work as a storyteller. With film, you craft the image you want on set, with a team who respect the medium and the methods. Because the resource is limited, you know what you have to do and it keeps us all alert.” ⠀ Having just released in the UK, Lazzaro Felice [Happy as Lazzaro] has been picking up rave reviews. “I was absolutely amazed when I tested the 50D and fell in love with it as our workhorse format. hooting in full summer sunshine with a quarter of the frame in shadow, I was impressed by its dynamic range and could not believe how much detail there was in the darker areas of the image. Under-exposing and then pulling a stop at the lab – which I did throughout the production – the pictures looked even more incredible." ⠀ Read the full #InCamera with @mid90smovie DP Christopher Blauvelt: kodak.com/go/incamera (link in bio ) ⠀ #ShotOnFilm #S16mm / 📷: @tobinyellandphoto , courtesy of @A24

@connorwjessup directed a short film for @caseymq dreamy new song 'The Constant' on 35mm Film. DP Christopher Lew captured the effects practically in-camera. Connor Jessup told us "'The Constant' is the most mysterious song on Casey's EP. It manages to be both hypnotic and surprising, distant and intimate, alternating between lulling you and twisting you. I wanted to focus on that sense of mystery, and the contrast between distance and delicacy. Usually distance is associated with coldness, but in this case we wanted it to feel warm and gentle. Shooting on film was incredibly helpful. It brought so much life and mystery. It's really, really hard to make a dead, mean image on film. We also decided early-on to do all of our dream-ghost effects practically, using reflections and projections, and film was invaluable in making those images grounded and tangible." “Shooting on film, wide lenses, natural light and fluid camera movement, were all of great importance to Yorgos [Lanthimos] on this production. He has a unique vision for every film he makes and hates the idea of conventional film coverage. For him, The Favourite was not so much a costume drama, it was rather more an enthralling character-driven story that he wanted to explore in his own particular visual way.” ⠀ @thefavouritemovie opens in theaters today. “'I want to shoot on film,' was the first thing Jason [Reitman] said to me about the project. He wanted that imperfect feel, that texture and palette which only come with celluloid. He also wanted The Front Runner to be an immersive, kinetic, cinema verité-style experience, so that the visuals might drop-in casually over a conversation about coffee, yet almost simultaneously the audience could overhear an important detail about the campaign." ⠀ Cinematographer @ericsteelberg ASC, on the choice of using 35mm on Director @JasonReitman 's @frontrunnermovie - which is in theaters everywhere today. “A couple of months ago, Ben sent me ‘Gratitude’, a beautiful and honest track which I instantly connected with. Hearing this track and the story it tells led to a discussion between us about everyone’s personal struggles with inner demons and how they affect everyone individually. This is a film about letting go, a turning point, making peace with your past and moving forward. ⠀ By shooting this in one-take allowed us to experience everything as the character does. The way in which we are dropped into a situation, with little context, allows viewers to read their own interpretation of the film. Though for me, the two key moments of the video involve the burning of all his possessions and the slow submersion in the lake. In my mind, his clothes and his possessions, such as his watch represent his past time and regrets, burning them and watching them disintegrate. The lake then acts as a symbolic cleanse, washing everything away and starting again.” ⠀ Director @harvpearson on how the film for Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s song “Gratitude” came to be, shot on 35mm by DP @hunterdalydp Read Hunter’s thoughts on the film in the comments below and watch the full film at https://vimeo.com/299850347 ⠀ #ShotOnFilm #35mm

“Although the 500T is high-speed, it has wonderful range and latitude. You can let highlights bloom, and burn-out a backlight, and still be confident of having detail in that part of the image. We shot on a sunlit beach near Malibu, where the water was glittering and glistening. That would probably have choked a digital sensor, but look on film has wonderful lustre and opalescence. Plus, the 500T has grain too, which is just beautiful to behold." ⠀ Director Drew Goddard with cinematographer Seamus McGarvey BSC ASC, on the set of Twentieth Century Fox's "Bad Times at the El Royale." “Kodak 500T is simply the best. You can use it in the sharpest sunlight and the darkest moments of the night, and it won’t let you down. I also went with just the 500T for the visual consistency of its fine grain structure, contrast and color saturation across all of our interior/exterior and day/night shooting situations. We see a lot of Irisz in the film, and the 500T is the most visual appealing to my eye when it comes to the faithful rendition of skin tones." ⠀ Captured on Kodak 35mm and 65mm film, Sunset (Napszállta ) was shot by Hungarian director László Nemes and cinematographer Mátyás Erdély HSC.
