Slavery is intrinsically tied to the formation of the United States of America. In fact, Boston’s landmark Faneuil Hall was “built with money secured by the trading of black people for goods and services,” notes artist Steve Locke ( @svlocke ). With the Auction Block Memorial, a bronze plate that will be heated to a constant 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit—roughly the temperature of a human body—Locke aims to “insert the living history of the enslavement of Africans and African-Americans into the historical narrative of Boston.” Learn more about this groundbreaking work of art at the link in our bio.
