June 2019

A few thoughts I’ve been pondering this week: So much of our success in nearly all aspects of life comes back to the simple act of not giving up. Of showing up when everyone else has quit. Lots of people start but it’s a much smaller number that finish well. And whether it’s in our relationships, in our work, our art, our businesses, our physical bodies, or our souls, the change, the “magic”, the transformation seems to come in the mundane act of falling down and getting back up again, and again, and again. It was Edison who said “Our greatest weakness is giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” So I hope you keep going, even on the hardest days even when the resistance feels the strongest. I had to take a little break on here as this month has been a little crazy thus far but I’m looking forward to sharing more this week as @Socality Camp kicks off in a couple days. ______ #Socality #CaptionsByWriters

“And hey, would you like to look outside sometimes? I'm just with my friends online and there's things we'd like to change.” - ‘Love Me’ by @the1975 / I’ve always been inspired by a variety of artistic mediums and music is a big one for me. This is a little teaser from a longer set @chloe chapdelaine and I shot earlier this year that I haven’t had a chance to share yet. ______ #Socality #MakePortraits

Had the chance to fly with @flairairlines for the first time this month (which exceeded my expectations ) and maybe it’s just me, but there’s something about being in the air that fills me with a sense of possibility. The word “limitless” comes to mind when trying to describe it. Maybe it’s the “airplane mode” and the lack of distractions. Maybe it’s the seeming improbability of flying thousands of pounds worth of humanity and metal at 35,000 feet, but moments in the air remind me that we are capable of things at the very edge of our imagination. And maybe, just maybe, it’s a gentle reminder that our collective dreams aren’t nearly as crazy or impossible as we think. ______ #Socality #CaptionsByWriters

Sometimes you read words that so perfectly describe the way you feel about something. Here’s a few like that from @emilyonlife inspiring me today: “‘Finding yourself’ is not really how it works. You aren’t a ten-dollar bill in last winter’s coat pocket. You are also not lost. Your true self is right there, buried under cultural conditioning, other people’s opinions, and inaccurate conclusions you drew as a kid that became beliefs about who you are. ‘Finding yourself’ is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, an excavation, a remembering who you were before the world got its hands on you.” ______ #Socality #MakePortraits #IsraelCollective

It was such a blast spending time in Toronto a couple weeks back to see the new @duerperformance store open and connect with so many amazing creatives as part of the community event we hosted there. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make it happen. Seriously so impressed with everyone in their company from top to bottom, and love seeing businesses that prioritize and see value in supporting and being a part of community building and local initiatives. Also doesn’t hurt that their products are some of the best out there for whatever adventures life throws your way. ______ #ExploreAlberta #Socality

In case you forgot it amidst the constant noise and our toxic tendency for comparison, you’re more than enough, and you don’t need more followers, more stuff, more relationships, or a better face, body, or image to make that any less true. ______ #MakePortraits #Socality

We used to measure wealth as a product of how much disposable time one had available. In our 24/7 always “on” world, we now frequently view those hustling around the clock with packed schedules and a few hours of sleep a night as “successful” or “important”. We’ve become quick to trade our time for a dream of “more” at the expense of the here and now. Today holds moments we will never have back. One of the biggest lies we can believe is that our worth, identity, and value are connected to how much we do. It’s okay to stop. To push pause for a minute, an hour, a day, or a week. It’s okay to turn all the screens off for a bit. It’s okay to take the time you need to get in sync with what’s going on inside of you. ______ #MakePortraits #Socality

It’s been said that the best camera is the one you have with you, and getting to play around and shoot with the #OppoF11Pro reminded me that there’s a lot of truth in that statement. I’m a big believer that everyone is creative, and it excites me to see technology advance in a way that continues to empower more and more people to create beautiful things with the tools already in their hands. ______ #BrilliantPortrait @OPPO

Loved the words my friend Garrett ( @shortstache ) shared today - (check out his most recent post ), especially for those of you creating in the arts and especially visual mediums. We live in an instant gratification culture where we want everything, including our art and creativity, to happen right away. It’s incredible to be inspired by others, but whether it’s in life in general or in the things we create, nothing can take the place of doing the work, building real foundations, leaning in, experimenting, failing, and allowing your own curiosity to lead you into that beautiful sweet spot where your passion and proficiency collide. ______ #Socality #MakePortraits

I came across a Bill Murray tweet today I’d saved from a while back that said “Social media is training us to compare our lives, instead of appreciating everything we are. No wonder everyone is always depressed.” It’s okay to celebrate, respect, and even appreciate or look up to the lives of those we see through the lens of these mediums, but the minute they start to have you questioning your worth, your value, your identity, or any of the other things that can turn toxic in the midst of comparison, it’s there a line has to be drawn. Our world doesn’t need a bunch of clones, it needs real, genuine people bringing their unique skills, gifts, and passions to the world, and that will look very different for each one of us. So keep doing you, because you do it better than anyone else can. ______ #MakePortraits #Socality

Some days art, work, and life itself are things that come easily, but most days it’s a lot of showing up and a lot more discipline. Behind every finished master work, every overnight “success”, and every celebrated achievement there’s usually a whole lot of hard work. Plenty of people start, but it’s those who finish well that get remembered. I’ve been trying to catch up a little on sharing a bit more recent photo work, and so thankful for the incredibly supportive and encouraging community on here. I don’t say it enough, but for all its flaws, platforms like this and the creative community within have been massive in pushing my own creativity and growth. Wishing you all an amazing week ahead! ______ #MakePortraits #Socality

Maybe life hurts a lot right now, and maybe you feel too much, and maybe you’re scared, and maybe not much has gone the way you thought. Maybe you feel behind, left out, cast aside, or forgotten. Maybe this world has been overwhelmingly unkind. Maybe hope feels like nothing more than the faintest spark. There is grace even there. There is still hope in the midst of the darkest of nights. There is still light inside of you. And maybe one of the greatest parts of living well is sharing a bit of that light when it grows dim in those around us. Whatever your hopes, your fears, your dreams, whatever your pain, your failures, your struggles, or defeats, know this: you’re not alone. There is still room for you here. ______ #MakePortraits #CaptionsByWriters #Socality

Maybe in wanting it all, in the overflowing current of our consumption, in the endless sea of distraction, maybe it’s there we find that the joy and the delight, the peace and the wonder, it was there all along. Waiting for the moment when the ordinary was enough. When there was gratitude in the mundane, beauty in the silence, grace in the in-between. Maybe in wanting it all, we drifted dangerously close to the opposite extreme. To wanting nothing. Settling for everything all at once, and in doing so, settling for nothing at all. ______ #Socality #ExploreAlberta #WritersCommunity

Feel free to send me a DM if you’re wanting an access code for the pre-sale before the event opens to the public or if you’ve got any questions. Like a lot of the creatively inclined, I’ve developed something of a love / hate relationship with social media and the ways we share and connect at this point in history. It’s changed my life in so many amazing ways, but it can just as easily put you into a box and into a place where you’re simply sharing to keep the dopamine flowing. The last few weeks I’ve tried to step a little off the “treadmill” so to speak. I took an afternoon not too long ago with @chloe chapdelaine (a frequent collaborator if you’ve been following along for a bit, and someone I work well with ) to step out of my comfort zone a little. Here’s a portrait we got from that day that I really liked. And for the most part, that’s all it is, but we all use these devices to shape the way we share and engage with reality. It’s okay to allow yourself the space to look at your own “reflection” and recognize when it’s beginning to shape you. ______ #Socality #MakePortraits

A little over a week ago the poet Mary Oliver passed away, and I’ve been revisiting some of her work this week in light of her passing. I believe there’s so much value in living our lives through the lens of our own mortality, and as a result, I find myself coming back to the idea of legacy quite regularly. Mary Oliver wrote these words about the end of a life, and they’re a beautiful reminder to live this life the very fullest: “When it's over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. When it is over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.” On a more personal / creative note, I’ve been working on branching out a bit more on the visual side of things here, and I’m looking forward to finding ways to share that work with all of you hopefully soon. Wishing each and every one of you an amazing week to come. ______ #Socality #ExploreAlberta

As cold weather sweeps the continent, and we brace for a chilly weekend after a mild winter thus far, I’ve been hunkering down to get better at practicing rest, creating better boundaries, and working on mapping out new creative projects for the next few months. It’s interesting to me that we’re so attracted to images and moments that evoke the idea of “rest”. As I look at so many of the images shared (I’ve shared plenty myself including this one ) over social media, so many reflect an idea of life from a place of rest or peace. And yet we’re probably one of the most hurried, over-tired, over-stimulated generations in history. We love the idea and theory of margin, the idea of a more mindful and present way of living. But it’s often difficult to admit that we wrestle deeply with living that out in practice. I don’t share these words tonight from a place of having it all figured out, in fact I’m far from it most days, but sometimes the first part of the solution is the simple recognition of the problem. It’s okay to stop. It’s okay to push pause. It’s okay to take that break, to take a day off. It’s okay to say no to something that sounds good but you’re a little (or a lot ) burned out. It’s okay to say no. Period. And when you see images like this one or the thousands of others as you scroll, know that most of those people are still on their own journey of discovering what rest looks like, figuring it out each day at a time just like the rest of us. ______ #Socality #CaptionsByWriters

I recently watched a TEDx talk where the speaker mentioned a friend who, instead of asking the perfunctory “what do you do” when meeting someone for the first time, asks “what’s your dream?” And maybe that’s a question a little too big or grandiose for social media, but in an effort to see more meaning in this space and actually get to know each other more, I’d love to know your answer to that question if it comes to mind easily. What’s your dream? What makes you come alive? And if it’s too big for this very limited space, perhaps it can simply be a thought you carry with you when you meet someone else for the first time. Maybe we can see past what we do and instead, into who we actually are. Every person carries something big inside of them, and rarely do we take the time to mine out and discover that for ourselves. ______ #Socality #ExploreAlberta

Over the last year I’ve been wanting to focus a lot more energy on using art and creativity to make a difference in a positive way by tackling some big issues. The one that’s been close to my heart of late has been mental health, and I’m currently in the process of exploring some tangible ways that we could use social media and creativity to make a difference. January 21st has been dubbed “Blue Monday”, and statistically speaking this is one of the most difficult times of the year for a lot of people fighting this head on. For me, this is simply the beginning of opening the dialogue, and if this is an issue you care about, don’t be afraid to reach out via the comments or send me a message. If you’re battling this stuff right now, know that you’re not alone. You are loved more than you know. And there is so much to live for. If you made it this far, thanks so much for reading this. I truly believe we can use spaces like this for more than just sharing our highlights or art for art’s sake alone (not that there’s anything wrong with that either ). As always, thank you all for your continued support, words, and encouragement. Means the world. ______ #Socality #LetsTalk

“Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited about what could go right.” - Tony Robbins. Saw this quote shared recently from the great team at @plywoodpeople , and those words connected with me on a lot of levels especially this time of the year. I don’t think it’s a justification for poor judgement or a lack of awareness or good situational discernment, but it’s so easy to make choices from a position of fear and not faith. From a place trying to avoid something bad happening instead of doing something for the sake of the all the good things that are often on the other side of those uncertain steps forward. So many of the best things in this life carry risk, and so much of it is out of our control. How we choose to stare it in the face though, that can make all the difference in the world. ______ #Socality #ExploreAlberta

And so it begins. After all the well wishes, the goal setting, the dreams of new things in a new year, and plenty of desires for change. When the dust settles, and the confetti gets swept away, all we’re left with is another day. Another day, and the choice of how we use it. As true as it was a week ago, it’s still true today. There is no substitute for hard work, for showing up, for the powerful results that come from the compound effect of doing something day in and day out. The fads, the quick fixes, and the schemes will pass. That body, goal, dream, project, vision, relationship, ideal. It’s on the other side of the smallest of daily steps forward. We’ve made massive industries out of self-help and personal growth, but any change is the simple product of consistent progress in a direction. So regardless of what it is we desire to see come to pass this year, it will live and die on the choices we make every day and every single week. Success in the small things. That’s my desire this year. And inevitably when we sweat the small stuff, the big stuff will take care of itself. ______ #Socality #ExploreAlberta #CaptionsByWriters
