#Repost from @nickhawkinsphotography // A team of researchers and veterinarians dismantle the body of 9-year-old North Atlantic right whale “Wolverine”. In just four weeks, 1.5 percent of the population has been lost. Most concerning is that four of the dead whales are reproductive females, of which there are now fewer than 100. To make things worse, three more right whales have been spotted entangled the first weeks of July. Follow the link in my bio to read our full @natgeo story about the current mortality crisis facing North Atlantic right whales, with text by @tomcheney // check out our story to find the article!

#Repost from @james_balog // My career started by following the scent of my intrinsic interests. Photographing nature combined my passion for mountaineering, my background as a geologist, and my lifelong love of the outdoors. It was exhilarating work, involving a lot of physical stress and danger. I got to visit fantastic places and have adventures beyond my wildest dreams. But over four decades, my basic interests have evolved into a deep vocation, and a compulsion to tell the story of human impact on Earth. Now, heading off to Greenland for the sixth time, I’m fueled not by the rush of floating between two vertical sheets of ice, but by a larger purpose to change humanity's relationship with nature.

#Repost from @peter_cairns_photography // In an ocean of environmental despair, the return of pine martens to Scotland’s forests is an island of hope. This was once Britain’s second most common carnivore and its demise, as well as its resurrection, tells the story of our unfathomable relationship with the wild world over the last few centuries. For now martens are doing well spreading their range either by natural recolonisation or by way of translocations from strongholds to areas where they are absent. Now at the dawn of a new era it is my personal belief that only Maria Madre Island (impacted by the presence of the now closed penitentiary ) should be opened to tourism, but we should leave María Magdalena and the other #islands uninhabited, assuring #sanctuary for the endemic species.

#Repost from @jasperdoest // While visiting Flamingo Bob last time when I was in Curaçao, @vetdoest and I had x-rays taken of Bob to check out his arthritis. For educational purposes we also took one extra of its neck. Although their neck is really long, with 19 vertebrae flamingos actually have fewer neck vertebrae than many other long-necked birds. But having fewer vertebrae doesn’t necessarily mean that the neck is shorter; the bones themselves are longer. This shows as a series of angles (like a dot-to-dot puzzle ) when the bird bends its neck, rather than as a continuous smooth curve. This allows flamingos to bend their neck backwards or downwards to allow them to clean their feathers and search for food. Its neck is vital to the process of filtering food from water; a flamingo often needs to turn their head upside down in the process.

#Repost from @garth lenz // Still exploring and learning about the changes - or lack thereof - in forest management on Haida Gwaii along with writer and friend BenParfitt. As I have written in previous posts earlier this week, it has been 20 years since I was last here in 1998 and 1999, and I have been anxious to see what has been learned in the intervening years. You can learn the answer to that in detail when the article comes out in The Narwhal, hopefully in the next few weeks. In the meantime, hear is another image from 20 years ago featuring Ben beside some massive Sitka Spruce and a gully which was once a productive fish bearing stream. Even 20 years ago, regulations would have required a buffer on either side of the steam. Instead, logging continued to the very border of the stream and the then the trees were felled directly into the stream gully destroying it. #clearcutlogging #haidagwaii #deforestation #habitatdestruction #logging #clearcut #ilcpphotographers #rainforestdestruction #temperaterainforest The Narwhal Stand Sierra Club Sierra Club BC

#Repost from @joelsartore // Originally from coastal regions of western Africa, the African rainbow crab is a colorful addition to inland deltas and islands such as Cape Verde. While their diet consists mainly of fruit and vegetation, this species is also known to be cannibalistic, and will consume smaller crabs, as well as small reptiles and amphibians, molluscs, fish, and insects when available. Juvenile and adult crabs of this species cannot remain submerged in water for long periods of time, so they will spend most of their time on dry land. Females, however, must return to the water periodically to release their eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae, and later on develop into young crabs. If the young do not make landfall by the time they are fully developed they will drown. #crab #rainbow #colorful #redwhiteandblue #africa #coastal #photoark #savetogether
