Would you like to see magic with me this summer in the #Dolomites ? I’m happy to announce an early July workshop with co-leader @chipphillipsphoto ! Adventure in the Dolomites 2019 is now open for registration! Check my website for details. About this photo: “Gold Rush” A decade of exploring the Dolomites for landscape photography has brought me to countless remote corners of the region that few people will ever see, but I have also spent a considerable amount of time in more well known places that are especially enchanting and worth many repeat visits. I have now lost count of how many trips I have made to this particular massif, but I can count on one finger the number of times that I have seen the conditions line up so beautifully here. I have watched the weather patterns in the area enough to know what is possible, what is likely, and what just might happen if the clouds part and the birds sing at just the right time in unison. On this morning, it all came together as mist from the valley rose up and rushed through the towers of the massif just as the rising sun found a break in the clouds and gave everything in its path the Midas touch. This moment lasted about a minute before the mist blew through and no more rose from the valley until later in the morning when the sun was much higher. “Enigma” Death Valley National Park (2017 ) There are some things in life that I will never understand. Like why is it that when you try to plug in a USB cable, it’s always the wrong way around the first time? And have you ever tried to get the best possible value from points on a travel credit card? It’s like playing chess against a simulated Grand Master with a few AI hints allowed, but you know it’s still going to result in a stalemate at best. And then there are some people who just cannot be figured out. We all know at least one person of the sort: they definitely have a core of something good inside, but they are broken on the outside. Yes, life is full of enigmas. Oh…and how about that ending to the TV series “Lost”? If anyone ever figured that out, be sure to let me know! Wanna shoot this kind of stuff with me? I have two workshops in DV planned in 2018 that you should know about: one with my bestie-forever Michael Shainblum ( @shainblumphotography ), and one that I’m teaching solo that is sponsored by @Canonusa Check out my website for the details. They’re going to be awesome…no doubt about it!
“Enchantée” French Alps (2017 ) One of the greatest perks of being a photographer is getting to meet people from all over the world, people who often become part of the fabric of my life through future interactions. Even if most of those interactions are online, the connection is still that much stronger after meeting someone in person. I feel the same way about experiencing new locations: once I have traveled to a place, I become particularly connected to it, and that bond registers even through seeing photographs of the area online. Similarly, sometimes when I first encounter a location, I get an extra special feeling about it, that tingle of excitement that usually accompanies the start of a great friendship. When I first visited the French Alps about five years ago, I knew that I had just met a new best friend and that we would be spending a lot of time together. It’s a feeling that is difficult to describe, but it’s the same one that I get when meeting certain people. Sometimes it’s the way they smile, or some extra sparkle in their eyes, or the way that they make me laugh—it’s simply that “je ne sais quoi” that signals the start of something special. Would you like to meet me in the French Alps for some awesome photography? My listing for the 2018 French Alps workshop with co-leader @enrico fossati is now available on my website. It’s an all-inclusive trip, so all you have to do is show up in Milan, Italy, and we’ll take care of the rest. If you have any questions about it, just let me know!
Due to popular demand, I am teaming up with one of my favorite landscape photographers to offer a completely unique workshop experience. @shainblumphotography (Michael Shainblum ) and I will be co-leading an amazing workshop together this February that will be unlike anything either of us have offered before. Check my bio or my my website for more info. Join us!
“Rip Curl” A remote river canyon in Arizona (2016 ) I sloshed through shin-high water for ten miles to get to this point of a remote river canyon and back again. And all for a little vignette of mud! Although I experimented with photographing some other discoveries, this one excited me the most of everything that I saw in the canyon’s farthest reaches. The two layers of mud, one more wet than the other, reminded me of waves breaking on a shore, and I was delighted to find them seemingly crashing into each other in slow motion. Summer is my favorite time of year for the Dolomites: lots of short summer storms means awesome atmosphere on a regular basis, the wildflowers are in bloom, and the seasonal streams are running. I love it! I just scheduled a new summer workshop session in the Dolomites for August 20–27 with co-leader @chipphillipsphoto All details are on my website. Join us! Photo: “Lift Off” ( #Dolomites , 2016 )
“Sweet Emotion” (French Alps ) This waterfall is exuberant, wild, and powerful, just like the best experiences in life. For that reason, I just let it rip, freezing the motion of the water instead of treating it with a typical long exposure treatment. Glacial runoff hits the crest of this waterfall with so much force that the water is launched upwards, far into the air, before gravity prevails and sends it all plunging into the depths of the pool below. It’s pretty impressive, rivaling anything in the Columbia River Gorge. Join me here in the summer of 2017! I’ll be announcing my French Alps workshops soon, so be sure to sign up for my newsletter if you want to be among the first to know the details. You can find links to my newsletter sign-up on my Facebook page or my website.
