It’s no stretch to say that the humble brick has been a cornerstone of civilization. Since about 7,000 BCE people have been stacking these molded and fired hunks of earth on top of one another, building not just homes but history itself. Located in a clearing once occupied by the Kalamazoo farmers market, this home’s striking facade is enveloped by its wooded setting. The bold, inky exterior is balanced by a minimalist interior, allowing the home’s organic surroundings to draw the eye outward through large-scale glasswork. Homeowners Liz and Kevin Hoekzema have plenty of experience with the construction process with their design-build firm @klhcustomhomes Yet, for their own home, the duo wanted to highlight what lay beyond the home. “We wanted a minimal, modern interior that just flows outside,” explains Kevin. The couple gave a lot of thought to the materials used and the relationship they wished to create with nature. “We wanted to focus on the view through to the outdoors—increasing the connection with nature and having natural light stream in,” says Liz. One way the couple accomplished this goal was by maximizing sightlines to the greenery outside with large-scale windows and doors from @themarvinbrand Watch the complete tour in the link in bio. - Filmed by @22_waves # #marvinbrand modernhome #modernarchitecture #kalamazoo #michigan #themarvinbrand #marvinwindows #modernwindows #video

Dashes of color and whimsical spaces transform this 19th-century apartment into a kid-friendly haven. When a family of four moved into the historic Osborne Building in Midtown, Manhattan, they called upon Chris Fogarty of @fogartyfinger to remodel the historic floor plan into an airy and colorful home. As the husband and wife had differing aesthetics, Fogarty worked with @reunion gs to establish a compromise between styles. “He wanted traditional with a twist, while she wanted light and fresh,” Fogarty says. After the extensive renovation, the apartment is now serene yet adventurous, a place that makes the entire family happy. Homeowners Sunil and Shalizeh “Shelly” Patel weren’t totally sure how to select shades and draperies for their Houston remodel, completed by @studiometarchitects Throughout the home, expansive windows and doors frame large oaks in the backyard but also expose interior spaces to hot summer days. Sunil and Shelly wanted shades that would complement the home’s architectural features but also provide appropriate sun protection. “Our main goal was to have shades that were very functional but essentially disappear when open,” recalls Sunil. The couple turned to @theshadestore for a custom shading solution that would fit their home and needs. “Our design consultant at The Shade Store created beautiful solutions that we wouldn’t have been able to select or identify on our own,” Sunil says. Says editor-in-chief William Hanley, “Whether we’re admiring a minimal home or studying a sculptural chair, we have to ask the same question: Does this design make us think differently about its expected use, its materials and process, or the social, historical, and ecological context in which it was conceived? On a block of midcentury bungalows in Vancouver, British Columbia, this playful new home offers welcome contrast with a facade that looks like falling confetti. Some people’s search for a new home begins with a list of needs and wants that stretches around the block. Brian and Karen James were not so fussy. “Don’t worry about the house. Just find a spot,” was their mantra as they combed the city’s white-hot real estate market for a place to nest. Once they secured a teardown near their previous residence, the pair called on @measuredarchitecture to design a new home to suit their laid-back lifestyle. “Some homes create an authoritarian weight. Everyone has to pull up their knickers when they come inside. This house indicates you can relax,” explains principal architect Clinton Cuddington. Since its invention in 1930, the butterfly roof has endured as a dramatic architectural feature. An inverted gable whose V-shape resembles that of two lifted wings, the butterfly roof is the brainchild of Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. Though the distinctive design first made its way to the U.S. in 1945, it only experienced widespread fame in 1957 after legendary architect William Krisel introduced it to developers in Palm Springs. A striking break from flat or gable roofs, Le Corbusier’s design has obvious appeal. In 2016, Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Sam Friedman found himself at a creative crossroads. As the tech developer pondered his next venture, a friend told him about a unique property near Joshua Tree that had just come on the market, “unique” being the operative word. Previously owned by a pair of Canadian physicists—who also happened to be nudists—it encompassed 112 acres and featured an abandoned 1,600-square-foot geodesic dome crowned by a faceted skylight. That the site had no water or power only heightened its allure. Sam put in a cash offer. “It was weird,” he admits. “But I was up for a challenge.” Despite never having done anything even remotely like it before, @samegfriedman decided to gut and rehab the structure with only the assistance of day help and friends. “I was the least handy guy before this, and now I can wire an electrical panel and frame walls,” he says with a laugh. “I tell my mom I can build a house, and she still doesn’t believe it.” Watch a tour of the @hawkeyehouse_ when you try Dwell+ for free in the link in bio. - Photo by @benjaminras Interior Design by @juliaehrlich #offgrid #offgridliving #geodesichome #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #joshuatree #hawkeyehouse #diy #diyrenovation #dwellplus

Located in a neighborhood of modest homes from the 1970s, this playful house hides behind a perforated facade. “The first thought was how to work in that neighborhood delicately—as the house is a bit more of a young interpretation of modernism,” explains architect Yoav Anderman of @anderman architects. The Israel-based firm used artfully placed perforations in the concrete wall to create privacy and shade without entirely blocking off the home from the neighborhood. Anderman then used the discarded concrete cylinders as pavers in the home’s rear patio. Laid out in a neat pattern, the circles echo the shapes at the front of the home. Nearly 40 years ago, designer Aldo Cibic helped make history. Along with other founding members of the Memphis Group, a collaborative of Italian designers led by Ettore Sottsass that introduced postmodern flair to a range of furnishings and housewares, @aldocibic showed that the whimsy, color, and reconceptual nature of Pop art could be extended to interiors. It’s no wonder, then, that Cibic’s recent renovation of a penthouse in Venice exhibits all of these qualities, even as the designer’s style has evolved. “What I love about the place is that it’s beyond one time or style,” says Cibic. “It’s about pleasure, comfort, and the way you move through the space.” Make no mistake, though—while it may not be a postmodernist interior per se, it’s full of color and playfulness. Located in a pine forest on a sandy piece of land, this idyllic Swedish summer house channels Japanese vibes. When asked by clients to design a holiday home in the tiny town of Ljunghusen, Johan Sundberg of @johansundbergarkitektur saw an opportunity to go beyond the typical Swedish/Danish midcentury style. "We wanted to move out of our comfort zone typology-wise," he says, "and see where the Japanese courtyard houses would take us." Additionally, a key requirement from the clients—a family of four with two teenage children—was to connect the home with the landscape. The firm employed a wood facade to help the house blend in with its surroundings and a large deck to extend the living spaces outside. Just three hours from Mexico City, this off-grid weekend retreat blends into a wild and remote landscape. When architect Fernanda Canales decided to create a vacation home for her family on a secluded plateau in Valle de Bravo, she knew that the isolated location and temperamental weather would be a challenge. Not only would the house need to be resilient enough to withstand weather whiplash, but it also had to create all of its own energy. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding flat terrain, Canales crafted the self-sufficient home around four courtyards. “Since the house is only one level, it almost disappears into the landscape,” notes Canales, who says that’s one of her favorite aspects of the weekend home. The owners of this California-style bungalow in Melbourne were looking to renovate their home to reflect the way their family lives: connected to the neighborhood. When @gardinerarchitects was approached about the project, the firm was struck by how the family of five know all of their neighbors and are active in the community. “Today we see suburbs full of bigger, grander houses with high fences and tiny backyards,” says the firm. “In our opinion, these houses that foster a family life conducted primarily inside, miss the mark.” Gardiner Architects therefore emphasized natural connections to the oft-used backyard and the surrounding neighborhood, as well as flexibility, practicality, comfort, and spaciousness. A new apartment building rises above this historic townhouse in Mexico City, uniting the 20th and 21st centuries. Located in La Colonia Roma, one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, the restored 1925 townhouse serves as a facade for newly built units while also anchoring the contemporary structure to its surroundings. When tasked with designing an apartment tower to meet the neighborhood’s needs for additional housing, Mexico City-based architecture firm PPAA faced a problem familiar to developers in historic neighborhoods everywhere: Local laws required that the front exterior and part of the original structure be maintained. The firm’s innovative approach was to cut the historic three-story home in half—preserving enough of the edifice—and build a sleek eight-story complex in the back of the lot. “We wanted to restore the old building and build a new one that is kind of talking in the same language, but in a contemporary way,” explains Pablo Pérez Palacios, founder of @perez_palacios_aa Peek inside the hybrid dwelling in the link in bio. - Photo by @rafaelgamo #modernhome #modernarchitecture #mexicocity #cdmx #mexicodf #mexico #apartment #apartmentbuilding #historichome #townhome #facade #glass #concrete #lacoloniaroma #monterreyavenue #victorian #millwork #restoration #staircase #skylight #baywindow #terrace #roofterrace #wood

Four pavilions balance privacy and togetherness in this thoughtful Silicon Valley abode. When tasked with creating a house for a family of four in Menlo Park, John Lum of @johnlumarch knew it wouldn’t be a standard, suburban space. “They didn’t want a modern farmhouse, but something that was a more classic, modern design,” says Lum. For a family with teenagers, it was crucial to have a space that would allow everyone their independence while still remaining connected—to each other, and the outdoors. “We wanted a house that facilitated spending time together and allowed us to be in the same space, even if we’re not all doing the same thing,” explain the homeowners. Tranquil Uruguay, across the River Plate from the sprawling metropolis of Buenos Aires, is where busy Argentineans come to relax. Its beach towns, lined up along the Atlantic coast, get more bohemian and funky the farther north you get and are buzzy in the summer season—December and January—but quiet most of the rest of the year. Buenos Aires–based architect Alejandro Sticotti and his family had been coming to the coast for 20 years before they spotted a plot of land and made it their own. Made up of two stacked boxes built from steel and board-formed concrete and wrapped in glass and tropical hardwood, the beach house is a sanctuary within a sanctuary.
