What luxury items do you bring into the backcountry with you? I always bring my art supplies, but I’m also tempted to bring all sorts of other things. Pool floaties, wine, excessive amounts of chocolate. I’m always trying to bring less stuff so I have space for more stuff😂 Anyway, the lakes in this area of the alpine lakes wilderness were beautiful. I should have brought the pool floatie. Instead I tried to paddle around on a foam ground pad which did not work😂. Now I’m curious what extra things you like to bring backpacking! . 📷 @lindseyanneoutside #drawntohighplaces #alpinelakeswilderness #washingtonstate #sheadventures

It’s been about a month since Shawn and I got married on the summit of Eldorado Peak in the North Cascades. Signing the papers on a windy summit was truly magical, but since then, we really miss each other! Work and adventures have kept us apart a lot, which is the unglamorous part of spending so much time at each of our jobs. His work commitments stop him from being able to join me in the mountains, and my work keeps me going to remote places. It feels hard to navigate balance between everything we love. But exciting news for us, this afternoon Shawn submitted the marriage license to records and licensing, so now it truly is official! And next week we go to the Nā Pali coast together: ) . @sarina_clark just wrote a blog post about our climb that made me cry if you feel like checking it out, link in my bio: ) . #eldoradopeak #loveinthemountains #drawntohighplaces #sarinaclarkphotography

So excited to hike with @lindseyanneoutside and @hiker_katherine this week! Does anyone have any favorite jokes or riddles I can torture them with on the way up?😂😂 . This painting is a collab Lindsey and I did at Mount Rainier the other week. I love the magic of watercolor combined with her letters. Hopefully we get to do some more tomorrow with @arts_of_katherine too! . #drawntohighplaces #mountrainier #ourpnw #sheadventures #sheexplores #pnwonderland

The colors at sunset were so beautiful! I had so much fun pouring them onto the page. I made this painting standing in front of Mount Baker, in awe of the crevasses and snow. How would I fit so much awe on such a small piece of paper? I worked pretty fast on this one, trying to capture the awe and the enormity of the landscape. The wind helped me by moving the paint around and playing with the colors with me: ) . Prints are available through the link in my bio as well as 5 drawings of views from the lookout made on wood from the old shutters of the lookout. How cool is this!! The Skagit Alpine Club did some work on this lookout and left the old shutters for hikers to take out with them. They were the perfect canvas for drawing on: ) I made four while I was up there and carried a bunch more out with me. Are you as obsessed with these as I am? @whiskeyjackdesigns and I collaborated on these little Baker paintings as the sun set on our little summit. We kept painting by headlamp as the sunset colors turned into darkness around us. As we painted, we talked about love and life and art. I’m not sure what I love more about these paintings, how cute they are, or what a fun night they represent. Left one is my drawing and Ali’s sky. Right one is my sky and Ali’s mountains. . #drawntohighplaces #whiskeyjackdesigns #sheadbentures #ourpnw #aacgram

I just got back from six days in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and I climbed one of my first multipitch alpine trad routes! Prusik peak was so fun, beautiful, intense, and challenging. I loved it. Thank you @alpingrl for climbing with me and helping me believe in myself. A year ago I never would have dreamed I’d be able to stand on the summit of Prusik, let alone lead some of our way up it. But slow and sure baby steps and skill building made that dream seem less crazy. I still have a lot to learn and I’m very excited about it. After the climb, I made this little beta painting for climbing the West Ridge of Prusik Peak: ) Route finding was the biggest challenge for me, and drawing this map out really helped me make sense of the route: ) . #drawntohighplaces #prusikpeak #aacgram

Having my mom and aunt around has been so fun! We have been going to all my favorite places in Washington and painting together. Today they tried to use Nikki colors to capture Liberty Bell. My mom’s is on the left and my aunt’s are the bottom two (mine are the four on the right ). I think they are doing amazing. What do you think? . If you ever find yourself in a beautiful spot with some extra time, I highly recommend trying a little drawing. Painting on a rocky little summit, as sunset spreads across the sky. I feel a sense of urgency to capture the beauty as quickly as it’s changing, but I can never keep up with the wild. Then I remember it’s not my job to be perfect. We get to be exactly who we are, doing our best, and that is exactly enough. . Sometimes the only way to figure something out, is to paint it a bunch of times. I loved learning about Prusik Peak yesterday as I painted all the shapes and colors. I made three different paintings and learned so much from each one. Mainly I relearned that it is ok to make mistakes, and it can even be fun. It was a great reminder to get out of my comfort zone more often. Which version do you like best? . #drawntohighplaces #pnwoutdoorwomen #sheexplores #prusikpeak #alpinelakeswilderness

The clouds rolled in and I got SOOO excited to paint. I made this painting in a mad frenzy trying to capture the clouds as the swirled around the peaks. 4 years ago there is no way I would have felt happy about painting weather that moved so fast, but today it is my favorite. When I stop to think about how much I’ve learned painting over the last few years it boggles my mind. The learning feels slow while you’re in the middle of it, but all of a sudden you look back and see how far you’ve come: ) Anyone else notice that? . I only had a few minutes to make this before it started raining so I decided to just go for it and see what would happen. I let go of any little voice in my head saying I didn’t have enough time, that it was too hard, or maybe I shouldn’t try at all. I tried to embrace the possibility that maybe it would be terrible and that could be really exciting because I would have learned something through the risk of making it. If you like to draw or paint, try to give yourself that freedom. Make mistakes, paint something that will probably be terrible, try a new paint brush or pen that’s unfamiliar. If you’ve wanted to try painting for the first time, but have been scared to do it, find a pen and make a little doodle today: ) . #drawntohighplaces #mountainart #soworthitmoment

Want to paint in Alaska with me? We will fly deep into the Alaskan Wilderness with @backpackalaska to spend five days exploring the rugged, remote terrain of the Talkeetna Mountains. Much like backpacking, watercolor takes creativity, the spirit of adventure, and often takes you somewhere different than you originally envisioned. Together we’ll explore the unexpected as we paint the landscape together. The trip includes the backcountry flight to the mountains, professional guides, art instruction by me for any level artist: ), all meals in the backcountry, an overnight in a cabin on our last night, and all group gear (tents, etc ). Dates are August 20-25 2019 . . I’m really excited for this trip and I hope you can make it! Link in my bio for details. The weather looked pretty iffy yesterday, chance of rain and high wind. It was really hard to convince myself to go to the mountains and explore, but I’m so glad I did! I wasn’t going to paint today, but then I saw Padi matching these pink flowers as he climbed and I couldn’t help myself. Just like in painting, the most important part of climbing to me is the process. It’s easy to go into something thinking you want a perfect painting or to climb the hardest route. But often it’s better to let that go and enjoy the magic of just trying something new. I don’t really care what grades I climb as long as I am having fun, learning and challenging myself. Sometimes that’s hard or terrifying and other days it’s relaxing and funny. I think it’s important to give ourselves the kindness and space for all of those things. 💜 Here’s to everyone having a week of enjoying the process. #drawntohighplaces #soworthitmoment #sweatydirtyhappy #sheexplores

Jet lag is pretty tough but at least it means getting up for sunrise is a bit easier. I ran out to this field of flowers just in time to watch the sky light up pink and orange. I made it to Switzerland! . I’ll be here for the next two weeks to spend time with my family who lives here: ) The first day or two here is tricky as my brain remembers how to switch to a different language. Swiss German is especially tricky because it isn’t a written language. When I try to write texts I agonize over the right way to say what I’m thinking and what the best way to spell it is. I want to cheat and look it up, because I’m embarrassed to make mistakes. But I can’t, because there is no dictionary, no right way of doing it. In some ways it’s similar to painting. The best way to do it is just to get out of your comfort zone and try it. Mistakes mean that we are learning and growing and often times they are better (or at least funnier ) than the way you intended. So here’s a challenge for us. Let’s try something hard, even if it makes us feel a little bit foolish: ) . . Let’s go to Alaska and paint together! I teamed up with @backpackalaska to create a wilderness watercolor camp this August. We’ll fly into the Talkeetna Mountains of Alaska for 5 days of true wilderness, adventure, and watercolor painting. I sat down to paint as soon as we got to the glowy summit this morning. The orange light was so beautiful and I couldn’t wait to capture it. But I reached into my pack and quickly realized I forgot my palette in the car😂 I had a few tubes of paint, so I used the lid of my lunch container as a palette and mixed up a pink color. As soon as I put it on the paper it froze into a geometric mess. No worries. I brought vodka in case it was too cold to paint with water. I poured the vodka on the page and it moved the paint around a little, but that froze as well. Even in all my layers and puffy gloves I was freezing too. Painting this morning was absolute chaos. Usually painting makes me feel so connected to the landscape, so grounded. But today I just had to say it is not the day and that’s ok. I put my stuff away and started doing jumping jacks to warm up. Usually I say my best work comes from the chaos of the unexpected, but sometimes it’s ok to decided the chaos is just too much. .
