Adding this guy to the long boy club. The sleek and streamlined form of the mud dauper wasp. While these look intimidating, stings are rare. They're not normally aggressive unless deliberately provoked. Mud dauper wasps get their name from the fact that they use mud to build their nests. #EarthCapture by @nightfall_photography #bbcearth #wasp #muddauperwasp #planetearth #macro #macrophotography #insects #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturelovers #entomology #earthlovers

What a long neck you have! 🦒 There are several theories as to why giraffes have the longest necks in the animal kingdom. Some say natural selection is the cause. Giraffes fight with their necks and those with longer necks could be more successful 'neckers'. It could also be to do with food availability. Individuals who can reach higher can access food and essential nutrients that those lower down cannot. The magic of the Milky Way 😍✨ There are 200 billion stars in our universe's galaxy, and enough dust and gas to make billions more. Not only is it impossibly vast, it's also incredibly old. More than half the stars found in the Milky Way are older than the 4.5-billion-year-old Sun. Galaxies like ours typically underwent a stellar baby boom, churning out stars in enormous quantities roughly 10 billion years ago. #EarthOnLocation by @bennberkeley in South Africa @kariega game.reserve . . . . . #stars #africa #milkyway #space #spacephotography #nightsky #bbcearth #earthcapture #earth #planetearth #earthlovers #landscape #landscapephotography #southafrica #safari #outerspace #sky #discoversouthafrica

#EarthCapture by @georgetheexplorer "The smooth-coated otter, just as it should be: completely wild, and not a social media accessory. The latter is putting them on course for extinction. Found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore and several other Asian countries, the smooth-coated is increasingly being poached from the wild to feed the latest Instagram obsession. As this obsession sweeps the world, countless videos show these semi-aquatic animals being walked on leads, playing with toys, and “cuddled” by their “owners”. On top of this, otter cafes are springing up in Japan and elsewhere, where eager visitors sip on matcha lattes while otters frolic around them. The actual reality is bleak. Poaching of young otters, loss of habitat, the trade in otter skins, and decline in health of aquatic environments has led to a 30% decline in the last 3 decades. @cites has recognised the urgency for their protection, adding them to Appendix I — this will effectively make the pet trade in otters illegal. These animals belong in the wild, and the wild only." . . . . #bbcearth #animallovers #naturelovers #wildlifephotography #earthlovers #amazinganimals #planetearth #otters #smoothcoatedotter #wildlife #earthlovers #animals #singapore #discoversingapore

#EarthCapture by @georgetheexplorer "Smooth-coated otters call Singapore home, but by the 1970s, they had become locally extinct in Singapore. Like so many places around the world, polluted waterways and loss of habitat were the primary culprits for their disappearance. Following a concerted effort by the various local authorities, the waterways were cleared up, green spaces created and finally, in the late 1990s, an otter was spotted. They were back. Since then, they've fanned out across the city-state, with every pocket of land being inhabited by a smooth-coated otter family. These incredibly intelligent animals have adapted to urban life, creating holts (dens ) under motorway bridges, fishing next to skyscrapers, and using drainage systems to navigate the city." . . . . #bbcearth #animallovers #naturelovers #wildlifephotography #earthlovers #amazinganimals #planetearth #otters #smoothcoatedotter #wildlife #earthlovers #animals #singapore #discoversingapore

#EarthCapture by @georgetheexplorer "The Isle of Mull is an otter haven, with over 300 miles of suitable habitat. Some days I’d see 10 otters in a single morning — quite the change from my 20% hit-rate on my local river in Dorset! In the U.K., they came close to extinction after massive population declines from the mid 1950s to the 1980s. The foremost reason for their decline were pesticides, leaking into the waterways leading to poisoning. At one stage, the Eurasian otters were all but extinct in England & Wales, save a few remote individuals. Now a “Priority Species” under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, otters have been rebounding across the U.K., now present in every county. With bans on many pesticides and PCBs, the health of waterways and coastal habitats have increased, and the otter population with it. If you’re lucky enough to encounter an otter in the wild, stay quiet, low and of course, savour the moment!" . . . . . #bbcearth #animallovers #naturelovers #wildlifephotography #earthlovers #amazinganimals #planetearth #otters #eurasianotter #isleofmull #scotland #mull #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #explorescotland #discoverscotland

#EarthCapture by @georgetheexplorer "Every inch of the Eurasian otter is built for purpose, including their whiskers! They are super sensitive, allowing the otter - along with their snout - to seek out prey, even in the murkiest of water. Eurasian otters also have mega acute senses: sight, smell, and hearing. Their eyes are placed on the top of their head, allowing them to see whilst the rest of their body is submerged. Their sense of smell is incredible, allowing early detection of prey and threats alike." . . . . #bbcearth #animallovers #naturelovers #wildlifephotography #earthlovers #amazinganimals #planetearth #otters #eurasianotter #wildlife #earthlovers #animals #scotland #mull #discoverscotland #explorescotland #lovescotland
