At London Design Festival Sam Jacob Studio debuted a new installation at Victoria & Albert Museum. At the museum’s entrance, visitors found a 13-foot-on-each-side glass cube hanging from the ceiling. Stand underneath it and look up, and you will find pieces of plastic floating by as if being carried by a current through space. It’s only a film, but the mirrored edges of the cube create the impression of it being limitless through a simple, yet effective, trick. Titled "Sea Things," the work from Sam Jacob Studio aims to raise awareness of plastic in our oceans. The Vessel is a recent addition to the growing collection of new landmarks in New York, including Santiago Calatrava's Oculus at the World Trade Center, the World Trade Center Memorial Fountain, and the High Line elevated park on formerly abandoned train tracks. It functions as an exclamation point toward the northern end of the High Line, attracting visitors to the otherwise hard-to-reach location. Envisioned as a new kind of public landmark, it is intentionally designed to be engaging and interactive — and in this case, climbed and explored. The structure is encompassed in a mile’s worth of pathway leading toward the sky, comprised of 154 intricately interconnecting flights of stairs, with almost 2,500 individual steps, and 80 landings. // . . . . . #archpaper #hudsonyards #architecture #publicart #landmark #newyork #copper #nyc #nycarchitecture #stairwaytoheaven #view
