After showing great leadership by becoming the first G20 country in the world to enact a ban on the trade of shark fins, it is disappointing and saddening to see Canada abandoning sharks when it matters by threatening to vote against their inclusion in CITES appendix II. You can make a difference by demanding that Canada change their position and vote ‘YES’ to add mako sharks to Appendix II of CITES. This addition will ensure any continued trade in mako sharks is both legal and sustainable and will provide the protection that they desperately need. Link in bio! It’s so simple to help...🦈🙏🏼 // 📸: The great @shawnheinrichs @sealegacy #cites4sharks

I’m grateful for all the time we’ve spend together over the years and all your inspiration that has led me from the mountains to the sea in hopes of using my camera for the good of the planet. ▶️🔊: Last night, on our final of four dives, we successfully tagged a bluntnose sixgill shark at depth (~520 meters ). I have no words to describe want it feels like to have an encounter like this. It is like traveling back 200 million years, into a place as wild and unknown as the outer limits of space. The effects are profound and humbling. This shark is estimated to be around 18 feet long, larger than the average Great White, and along with giant squid and sperm whales, is THE dominate predator of almost all of the world’s oceans between 200 - 1000 meters deep. This is the first time anyone has tagged a shark from a submersible, EVER. FSU’s Dr. Dean Grubbs, the lead scientist on this mission, is the first to ever tag a bluntnose sixgill with a satellite tag, but up until last night had only been able to do so by bringing them up to the surface. Because bluntnose sixgills are a deepsea species, it's hard on them physiologically to be tagged in this way. Now that we've proven this method can work for deep sea species like the sixgill, we can unlock the world of leviathan deep-sea dwellers and gain important insights into their movement and behavior. The successful shot was fired by geneticist Gavin Naylor (seen here ), Director of the Florida Program for Shark Research. On the policy side, so little is known about this species that it's nearly impossible to make science-based decisions on management. If this shark keeps getting caught as bycatch, for example, we don't know where and why they overlap with longline fisheries or what the population impacts will be—or even if they can survive capture and release. Now that we can track and observe the bluntnose in its natural environment, we can start answering some of those questions with data from the satellite tag. // Thanks to @oceanx and the best media team @janssenpowers @julienajarry @mdalio @swervy_swerverson for the honor of collaborating and visiting this special place. The work continues... 📷: @janssenpowers

Live update from the @oceanx deep sea shark expedition // Dive 1: We settle the small, 3-man submersible on the silty ocean floor at -1800 feet & wait by the red light of a single headlamp focused on the baitpole attached to the sub. I’m filming with the super lowlight Canon ME20-F at 1,000,000 ISO. The anticipation is indescribable. 3 hours in, a monster sixgill shark startles us in the dark. Go time. We activate the green laser pointers, allowing us to line-up an accurate shot from the tagging gun, hoping she crosses its path during her visit 🤞🏼 and turn on the lights to illuminate the scene. We watch in awe as this elusive shark makes our sub feel like a toy and has her way with the bait. She never gave us a clean shot (the satellite tag / tracking device would only penetrate her thick skin a few centimeters ) but we did end up with some good footage of the event. Kudos to @oceanx and the scientists for going beyond what we thought was possible in the effort to understand and protect these amazing sharks. Resting up now for tonight’s deep dive. FYI - Dark Side of the Moon plays exceptionally well down here. 👍🏼 Stay tuned.

A polar bear cruises on the sea ice below the edge of Svalbard’s great hanging glaciers. Walking bears expend 13 times more energy than resting bears. This partly explains their preference for still-hunting, which usually involves a long, patient wait for a seal to surface at a breathing hole in the ice. But the sea-ice can be vast and ever-changing and meals can run scarce, forcing bears to cover great distances. Because of this a polar bear’s home range can be enormous, far greater than any other species of bear. @sealegacy

Roughly translated as ‘Bird Mountain’, Alkefjellet is one of the most spectacular bird cliffs in Svalbard. Home to approximately 60,000 Brunnich’s guillemots that nest right on the towering cliff face, Alkefjellet is a magnificent sight. The cliff face itself is made up of basaltic pillars which rise vertically from the waters of the Hinlopen Strait, between Spitsbergen and Nordauslandet, in places over 100 metres high. These sheer rock faces are home to thousands of nesting birds, often circled by Glaucous gulls looking for a meal, and Arctic foxes hunting nearby. Shot on expedition with @naturalworldsafaris last Summer. It was an honor to lead this trip deep into Svalbard’s magical fjords.

Did you know an estimated 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year? That’s a staggering number and it can be an overwhelming thought if you love the oceans as much as me. So in addition to reducing single use plastics, it's super cool when I find conscious-minded products and can support companies who share the same “blue values" as me. Each pair of @sperry BIONIC shoes is woven from plastic bottles recycled from marine and coastal environments. My job as a conservation photographer to is to inspire, educate and bring the beauty of the oceans to people around the world who aren’t able to experience it first-hand. I might as well wear shoes spun from marine-recycled plastic along the way. #SperryForGood #sponsored // Link in Bio.

150,000 square kilometers of new marine protected areas announced in Azores under the Blue Azores program with leadership from the regional government, @oceanoazulfoundation & @waittinstitute @natgeopristineseas and more. So much hard work and time (sometimes entire careers ) go into protecting even the smallest amounts of the oceans and the big wins are rare. But they give me so much hope. My contributions are small within the Azores in terms of time and commitment but I hope they are large in helping communicate how special this place truly is. I was honored to be on their first partnered expedition to the area in 2016 and experience this sperm whale scene with leader Emmanuel Goncalves @emanueljfg alongside me. I’ll never forget the fire in his eyes after that. It’s why we do what we do. Thanks for your commitment to Blue Azores.
