Do you carry a sensor cleaning kit in your camera bag? I do. Years ago I took an epic trip to China and captured some incredible shots. Unfortunately, my sensor was contaminated early in the trip and all of the photos were dotted with dust artifacts. Since then, I've always kept a swab and cleaning fluid in my backpack. This practice has saved my clients and I numerous times when we are out in the field. This particularly morning, I woke up to a dense low-lying fog. I knew if the light breaks through I would be in for an phenomenal sunrise. I hurried up the ridge, set up my gear only to find the camera sensor contaminated with dust spots everywhere! I quickly got out the swab and did a sensor cleaning right on the ridge! And luckily just in time to capture the magical morning light filtering through the lifting fog. It's always impressive to visit the blast zone of Mt St Helens where trees were snapped off like matchsticks. Their haunting trunks still remind us of the mountain's fury even decades later. #fog #nature #landscapephotography #mtsthelens #mtrainier #nationalparks #Washington #naturephotography #foggy #sunrise #mist #clouds #mountains #forest #photooftheday #pnw #go #sunrise #pacificnorthwest #wanderlust #picoftheday #optoutside 🌲

It's been an atypical Monsoon season here in the desert Southwest. Despite the dry spells, Greg McCown and I found some incredible storms with our workshop participants. There were definitely tons excitement and cheers. If you want to join us hooting and hollering next year, be sure to sign up now. Our July 31-Aug. 2 workshop is already sold out. We just have a couple spots left for July 23-26. https://actionphototours.com/storms-and-saguaros-workshop/

Where do you have your team meetings? At Action Photo Tours, we like to have a view at our meetings! Recently I was able to spend some quality time with my teammates at one of the grandest places. When we first arrived, there wasn't a cloud in sight and we thought there wouldn't be much of a sunset. Luckily, some wispy clouds rolled in at the perfect time and soon the sky was on fire! At the peak of sunset, the colors were so intense it didn't look real. I find that I usually like more subdued sunsets because the range of colors is more pronounced. This shot was taken just before the sky went nuts, when there was still some color variations in the sky. I love soft reflected light like this for my foregrounds. @johnnyadolphsonphotography @nicolepinophotography @yagi_photography @twotracusa #GrandCanyon #Arizona #igsouthwest #instagramaz #travel #nature #grandcanyonnationalpark #adventure #canyon #grandcanyonnorthrim #photography #grandcanyonviews #hiking #grandcanyonnps #travelphotography #coloradoriver #desert #photography #instaarizona #instahiking #instaview

The PNW is definitely one of my favorite regions in the US. Very few places rival its diverse landscapes and distinct seasonal changes. This summer, I was fortunate to catch the wildflower bloom on Mt Rainier. My buddy @jeffmooreoutdoors and I hiked up to a high alpine meadow and found huge fields of wildflowers. I liked this particular patch because it showcased the numerous varieties of healthy blooms. Just before sunset, the clouds surrounding the peak began to break and beautiful light filtered through. It was a magical moment to be sure. #mountrainier #pnw #washington #mountrainiernationalpark #seattle #mountains #pacificnorthwest #pnwonderland #landscapephotography #mtrainier #hiking #nationalpark #cascades #summer #flowers #mtrainiernationalpark #travelwashington #rainier #nationalpark #tahoma #travel #northwest #washingtonstate #seattlephotographer #wildflowers #cascadia #nationalparks #travelphotography #pndiscovered

Photographing wildlife takes a good degree of patience. To get the best results, you often have to spend some time observing the animal's natural behavior.  This will give you the opportunity to line up for the perfect shot. While in Mexico, I noticed some birds flying around the jungle that the locals call "Motmots". They were busy exiting their nests inside their cave and catching bugs. Before going back inside the cave, they would land on this branch. So I positioned myself near this branch and waited. Soon enough, they were comfortable enough with my presence and would come and land on the branch. These birds were very colorful and it was fun seeing the different types of bugs they would catch!  Taken with a Sony 100-400mm telephoto, handheld at 1/400sec. #Mexico #wildlife #motmot #bird #birds #jungle #catchingbugs #Yucatan #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #animals #birds #photography #wild #animal #bird #naturelovers #travel #photooftheday #natgeo #birdsofinstagram #birdphotography #bhfyp

Happy Friday! The temperatures are cooling and Fall is right around the corner. It's always bitter-sweet as summer comes to an end and memories such as morning dips in the lake become distant. On this particularly calm morning, the sun was peeking out behind some fluffy clouds and casting an inviting warm glow all around us. I used a telephoto lens and caught Evelyn going for a dip. I find the telephoto lens really amplify the clouds and sun. Now who is ready for some Fall colors! #Mexico #travel #travelphotography #photography #nature #travelgram #photooftheday #instagood #instatravel #wanderlust #travelblogger #summer #trip #adventure #traveling #vacation #travelling #explore #picoftheday #holiday #landscape #beautiful #ig #beach #travelers #sunrise

@dustinlefevre and I just concluded our Badlands workshop with a phenomenal group of talented photogs. We were non-stop shooting sunrises, sunsets, and Milky Way with slot canyons and post-processing mid-day. To top it off, we ended with another beautiful sunset. This is a single exposure image, focus stacked for foreground sharpness @16mm. The dates for our 2020 Badlands workshops are out! Grab your spot soon before it fills up. Happy Sunday! As you read this, I'm deep in a canyon similar to this. I'll be squeezing through narrow fissures, swimming through cold underground water, and rappelling down carves sandstone funnels. In other words, I'll be smiling ear to ear!

I just had someone order a print of this image and it brought back some great memories with Jeremy Himle @jhimle We wanted to get a high view of this geyser but there isn't anything tall in the vicinity. Nowadays, we would just use a drone and it would be easy. But we didn't have that luxury so we brought along some long aluminum conduit and zip tied our tripod legs to the poles. This made our tripod over 20 ft tall! It took a lot of attempts to get the right composition along with the correct polarization angle. But the long exposure effect from high up was magical!

Happy Sunday! Evelyn and I have a tradition where we end the day by telling each other what we are thankful for that day. Today, I want to take the opportunity to thank all the incredible clients at Action Photo Tours. One of the greatest privileges I have is to work closely with people from all walks of life. I have been inspired by their passion for life, invigorated by their enthusiasm for photography, and humbled by their wisdom. I have grown as a photographer, an instructor, and most importantly, an individual through our relationships. Everyday, I'm reminded how priceless it is to share laughs, insights, and occasionally, disappointments in the vast wilderness! Thank you all for being an Action Photog! This is a photo from Gail Myer while on tour with us at the Reflection Canyon. It's a brilliant composition echoing the arch of the Milky Way to the curvature of the foreground! Nice work, Gail!

Happy Labor Day weekend! Where are you going? Who are you seeing? What are you doing (or eating )? We are out deep in the desert Southwest taking advantages of the clear and dark night sky. The Grand Canyon was where I first fell in love with the starry sky. I was 10 years old and was camping on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with my family. I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. When I got out of the tent, I saw a scene similar to this photo. I was completely blown away! Having grown up in Iowa, I had never seen starry night skies like this before. I knew this was an area I had to return to someday. These days, I love bringing clients out on night photography shoots and watching them gaze in awe at our dark night skies. It is such an indescribable and unparalleled experience to peer into the depths of space and contemplate the vastness of our universe. We have announced some of our core Desert Southwest Workshops for the first half of 2020. Stay tuned for some special workshop experiences we are finalizing! #GrandCanyon #MilkyWay #nightphotography

It was a Milky Way party last night at White Pocket! Ryan Smith @ryansmithfineartphoto and I wrapped up our first workshop tonight. After we returned from White Pocket today we did a post-processing session where we learned many new editing skills. We post-processed one of our client's images and learned how to focus stack foregrounds in night shots. It's always fun to see the real image as well as one from behind the scenes. What a fun group to hang out with for the past 4 days!! #WhitePocket #MilkyWay #nightphotography #ActionPhotoTours #photoworkshop

Is it hot where you are? This little spring cub was waiting for winter when we met him. Did you know that polar bears evolved from grizzlies about 150,000 years ago? Their skin is actually black. They only appear white because their translucent fur reflects visible light! Each year, we will curate a limited, unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience that is outside of our core Southwest portfolio. Coming up in 2020, we will be sailing amongst towering icebergs and majestic whales. One of the most exciting and rewarding experiences as a photographer is watching rapidly changing weather patterns. That feeling you get when clouds part and glorious light break through is pure glee! This Sunday evening, Evelyn and I went for quick hike. The hike started with clear blue skies but clouds were starting to build. I was betting on a brilliant sunset when half way up the mountain, I noticed the fog was rolling in fast. By the time we got to the view point, it was almost a complete whiteout without any views. The wind had picked up and Evelyn was getting a little pouty. We waited a while but hope was dwindling. I finally packed up and started the hike out. All of the sudden, I heard "The mountain is coming out...the mountain is coming out!!" We started running back and, in a matter of minutes, the fog descended and quickly dissipated. Definitely a treat worth waiting for! #mountrainier #pnw #washington #mountrainiernationalpark #seattle #mountains #pacificnorthwest #pnwonderland #landscapephotography #mtrainier #hiking #nationalpark #cascades #watercolor #summer #mtrainiernationalpark #travelwashington #rainier #nationalpark #tahoma #travel #northwest #washingtonstate #seattlephotographer #kuridsh #cascadia #nationalparks #travelphotography #pndiscovered

From my Instagram Story a couple weeks ago, a number of people were asking if I happened to catch the lightning bolt when the train passed through. So here is the shot I captured with the lightning trigger at 1/5 sec. I liked the slight motion blur this shutter speed gave the train as it zipped along below the bridge.   #Arizona #igsouthwest #instagramaz #stormchasing #lightning #train #storm #photography

During our visit to Mt Rainier last weekend, we found this snow cave carved out by the rushing flow. Going inside a snow cave can be dangerous and you should have the proper safety equipment. But it is such a surreal experience with the fluted ceiling textures, the drips of water coursing down, and the sound of the rushing stream echoing off the walls. While snow caves are cool (no pun intended ), ice caves take the experience to a whole different level! Imagine blue, translucent ice radiating all around you in myriad patterns and textures. If photographing an ice cave is on your bucket list, join us in Iceland Feb 2020. Due to demand, we opened up a second winter workshop with Siggi Brynjarsson and David Swindler. Life is so resilient and adaptable. Spirit Lake near Mt. St. Helens is an impressive example. If you look closely, you'll see the lake is still jammed with logs from the 1980 eruption. During the eruption, everything within eight miles of the blast was wiped out almost instantly. The shockwave rolled over the forest for another 19 miles, leveling century-old trees. Even today, you can see all the trunks neatly aligned to the north. Beyond this “tree down zone” the forest remained standing but was seared lifeless. Scientists thought that Spirit Lake may take decades to recover as the water turned toxic, infested by noxious bacteria and slime molds. The lack of oxygen killed off much of the life in the lake. But phytoplankton emerged and within just a few years began to restore the lake's oxygen levels. The water became clear again and fish were able to be reintroduced. Now, the area is green again with wildflowers blooming and trees growing. What a great turn-around story! #pnw #mtsthelens #pnwonderland #hiking #volcano #mountsthelens #spiritlake #photography #wildflowers #beargrass #washington

There was a lot going on in the sky during this sunset! The only thing I was hoping we would get was some cloud to ground lightning. All we saw were some cloud-to-cloud flashes. The rain shaft you see on the left is called virga - it's drying up before it even hits the ground. The wind is responsible for making it curve off to the side. #Arizona #igsouthwest #monsoon #virga #instagramaz #desert #southwest

One of my favorite memories growing up in Iowa was going out in the backyard and catching fireflies on humid summer nights. Fireflies are actually beetles and the bio-luminescent light they produce is extremely energy efficient. During their brief mating period, the males will fly and emit a species-specific flashing pattern. The waiting females identify the pattern and give a return flash the male will recognize. This is a 13-sec long exposure. It was really difficult for Evelyn to hold still in this dark forest since there was no horizon to look at. We strategically setup the shot on a trail with a small amount of light coming in on the far end. The window to photograph the fireflies is very small - it can't be too bright or too dark to get the best shots. #fireflies #firefly #night #nightphotography #lightningbugs #nature #naturelovers #summer #forest #longexposure

The Grand Canyon is one of my all-time favorite places to visit during monsoon season. Getting to this amazing view was not easy and it took much longer than I had anticipated. I could see the light was going to start breaking through the clouds so I needed to hurry. I ended up running the last couple miles with my heavy camera pack in tow, dodging cacti and rattlesnakes en route. As soon as I got to the rim, I downclimbed some rocks to a good vantage point for photography. The light lasted just long enough for me to fire off a couple shots and then it faded for the rest of the evening. Timing is everything in photography! Just so you can appreciate how vast this view is, I took this shot with my 11mm lens. #igsouthwest #instagramaz #arizona #grandcanyon #grandcanyonnationalpark #coloradoriver #desert #photography #instaarizona #instahiking #instaview #adventure

We had such a great time on our Arizona Storm Chasing Workshops!  Yesterday was our final day and admittedly the storm forecast was looking bleak. Greg and I looked at several different models and decided to place our bets on an area out west of Tucson. Sure enough, several storms fired up while we were there almost exactly in line with what the models forecasted! We were able to capture some great daytime lightning shots as the storms swept over the vast desert. We already have dates for 2020 Storm Chasing. These are some of our most popular workshops and will likely sell out as soon as we announce to our loyalty group. If you're not a loyalty member, join today to get 10% off all bookings for a year and get first notification on the 2020 workshops!  Visit our website to learn more. #Arizona #Tucson #igsouthwest #instagramaz #storm #weather #rain #clouds #nature #sky #lightning #photography #thunderstorm #thunder #landscape #naturephotography #stormchasers #instagood #photooftheday #stormclouds #stormy #bhfyp

Mexico has definitely become our new favorite backyard! We recently just go back from whale shark snorkeling, cenote diving, and stromatolite floating. Yes, stromatolite is a thing! All along this turquoise river, rocky structures made by photosynthetic cyanobacteria lined the banks and formed pool-like structures. These microbes secrete sticky compounds that bind together sediment grains to create a mineral “microfabric” that accumulates in fine layers. Apparently, massive formations of stromatolites formed along shorelines all over the world about 3.5 billion years ago. They were the earliest visible-to-the-naked-eye manifestation of life on Earth and dominated the planet for more than two billion years. Today, they are scattered in salty lagoons and bays in certain parts of the world. #mexico #rivieramaya #travel #travelphotography #lifestyletravel #travellifestyle #lovetravels #travelers #quintanaroo #tulum #rivieramaya #cancun #islamujeres #playadelcarmen #puertomorelos #cozumel #photography #borntotravel #borntotraveltheworld #paradiseislands #uniqueplaces #ig #travelgram #landscape #traveltheworld #uniqueexperiences #travelinstyle #hiddengems

Our second round of Storm Chasing is starting today! It’s so much fun finding great storms like this and capturing the action. If you remember the sunset group shot I posted a couple days ago, these are the shots we were getting just to the right of us. I moved to the little known city of Kanab a few years ago because of the endless hidden gems tucked away in Utah's Grand Staircase.  Since then, I have fallen in love with this area and am calling it home.  Kanab, and its surroundings, is a photographer's heaven with limitless opportunities for exploration.  Next Spring, we will be hosting the inaugural Outsiders Conference in the newly constructed conference center.  Just two months after our initial announcement, the conference is completely SOLD OUT!! Thank you for everyone's support and confidence in us.  We will work tirelessly to ensure this is an epic and unique experience.  A big shout out to our great speakers, conference organizers, and marketing hubs! This photo was taken just outside of Kanab.  I love this little hoodoo city set in the deep red sandstone. Look at how skinny the pedestal is on the leftmost hoodoo!

We just wrapped up one of our 4-day Storm Chasing Workshops in Southern Arizona. Even though the monsoons haven't been really active this year, we were able to find amazing storms each night and capture lots of lightning, dramatic sunsets, rainbows, and crazy clouds. On this particular night, our storm chase brought us all the way down to a remote corner of the Mexican border. At sunset, the sky exploded and about half the group photographed the highway while the other half focused on capturing the lightning storm to our right. As darkness fell, the bolts just kept dropping one after another and we couldn't believe how many great shots we got! What a fun group we had the privilege to work with! #Arizona #igsouthwest #monsoon #stormchasing #actionphototours #storms #desert #southwest #Tucson

Six years ago, I came to this spot to shoot the Milky Way for the first time. Imagine standing on the edge alone looking into the vast and expansive wildness lit up by the starry sky! It remains one of my all time favorite Milky Way locations to this day! Since then, I have returned to this spot numerous times to try to get the perfect shot. Earlier this year, I finally nailed it. This is a 3-shot horizontal pano at 15mm. A couple days ago I helped a client put together a similar Milky Way pano he took while on tour with us. If you are interested in post-processing training via Skype, just shoot us an email to info @actionphototours com. Tech specs--Sky: 8 shots stacked x 3 panos sequences. ISO 10,000, f/2.8, 13sec.
